Sounds like someone tried to login to your account and clicked "forgot my password," thus sending you the email

I guess it makes sense. Probably some kid who doesn't even know how "forgot my password" option works, thought he could actually get my password using that lol, the ignorance :D

They don't :) I check which IP was used to log into my Gmail account upon every login and it's always just mine. Not to mention my PW for e-mail is very strong and I rarely use that e-mail in public so even getting my login for my mail would be hard for those people, hint - it doesn't have anything to do with "hustlayo" lol.

I changed my password but why would I change my e-mail address? I use my e-mail for so many things lol.

The most secure account should be your e-mail. With access to your email someone could easily reset all of your other passwords, but if your retain control of your email account nobody would be able to reset your password, and if someone change your Steam or other things password you can reset it easily.

I know but my e-mail is safe, don't worry. No one has ever breached anything on any account I ever had on the Internet. I always use good and long passwords and take most precautions I can.

I don't care if they have my username. It won't get them far as you can see. But thanks for the tip.

No. You can change your screen/display name (what people see), but your "account" name (the one you see in the top right corner of Steam beside the Big Picture icon is not changeable.

I see some people had this issue last week. Either Steam is bugging out or someone is trying to hack/crack Steam accounts lately. Oh well.

A troll can force a password reset mechanism to start with a (random or public) key. If you took that key, you get that E-Mail. Your account is still save, It's just like the Steam query account by cd-key E-Mail, just with more troll factor.
edit :yeah, I'm wrong. I go to bed now. x_x

Yea; what OP is talking about is different. What Infernotoni is talking about is the "Steam Account - Query Account by CD key" e-mail. It sends it to you when someone uses a game code that you have already used; and shows up as a duplicate for them, and steams' automated system sends you that email.

So it means I wasn't the only one. Probably some mass attack on some part of community ;P

First, never use the same Profile name as your Account Name (unfortunately you can't change your account name).
Second, take care not to show your account name in screenshots or streams or whatever.
At least the account name without the password is pretty useless, otherwise it's half the way...and if someone tries to bruteforce it, steam might lock the account temporarily.

So it's confirmed, it was some sort of mass "attack". Thanks Madness.

I tried to hack madnessnewb's account earlier and I guess I messed up something in the process, not sure why so many people got the same email. My apologies, I'll be more careful next time.

Woke up to that email when checking from bed, had a panic attack and rushed out.

Hardly a "hacker". Probably not even a cracker lol. If all they do is click "forgot my password" then yeah, good luck to them lol.

I didn't think about that. But most games I won are from either trustworthy people from groups or from high level contributors which are trustworthy as well. Oh well, even if they had my e-mail they wouldn't be able to log in to it lol.

Website databases are compromised all the time and this is the result of it. If you use any of the same information from other websites then you'll probably get something else broken into eventually. These aren't hackers doing it, it's just people with access to the stolen databases. Often these databases have salted passwords (*** instead of fully visible), but other information like email and usernames are exposed. A lot of the hackers who steal the data just release the information for free on a pastebin. These password recovery attempts are from the scavengers picking at the corpse, figuratively speaking. Unless your email gets compromised it shouldn't be an issue.

Do you have a LastPass account? I got the same thing today, and I suspect someone got a hold of the leaked email addresses and tried plugging them into the password recovery form. If your Steam email is the same as your LastPass email, change the Steam email. And if your Steam password is the same as your LassPass master password, change both email and password ASAP (the passwords were properly secured, but never risk it).

I don't have a LastPass. I don't "believe" in password storages of any kind.

No need, they didn't even enter my Steam account. My passwords are safe with me :)

You can use the mobile authenticator too, nobody can access your account without having you and your handy or just your handy. The verification code mechanic is also included in the mobile app, no e-mails anymore. :D

The name of the mail is "Steam Account Password Reset" and inside there's just this:
"Your account recovery code is:......" and a 5 digit code there.
Why would this come to me and what triggers such mail? Does anyone know? I just changed my password to be sure but if someone wanted to access my account then I think an e-mail would come to me saying that as I have Steam Guard activated, right? This "account recovery" mail coming out of the blue doesn't make any sense. WTF?
