Most definitely. In my experience @ uni and work in SFO (about as progressive as you get), transgendered persons are treated differently. Is your experience different?

I'll have to agree with this. Of course there are people out there who have a problem with LGBT. Well, here's news for you: No amount of awareness days or forced sensitivity trainings or whatever will change their mind. So why bother?
Then there's the people who are simply scared of what's different to them. Now if the LGBT community would simply live their lives like everyone else and not always demand special attention, the 'different' vibe would go away and those people would start accepting them.
Then there's people like me who simply don't give a shit whether you're straight, queer, asexual, pansexual or sexually identify as an assault helicopter. And if anything, all that forced 'awareness' will annoy those people with time, since to them, everyone's the same already.
But of course the ones that scream loudest are those who feel they have to prove to themselves and the world how incredibly progressive and liberal-minded and whatnot they are, and keep shoving their gigantic tolerance down all of the above's throats. Good going.

You're right, for the most part some people will never change their minds about civil rights issues. Their kids will though. That's why you'd look appalled at your grandfather if he started going off about all the coons and colored boys in his neighborhood, but you know he's too old to change.
