Greenlight game Journey of the Light claims to be the most difficult game on Steam. Apparently, only the Dev himself attests to have beaten the first level (supposedly the first of eight). Upon some digging in the game files, a few users discovered that there is actually only one level and it is, in fact, impossible to beat. Recent updates are hilarious.

It's not against the steam's rules do something like that?

After the greenlight and trading card system steam, 90% of release is crappy.

This is an interesting point. I wonder how the advent of trading cards affected the quality and number of games released

I'd say it has had a significant negative effect. Especially due to all these people that collect games merely for the cards instead of actually ever playing said games (or at least having the intention to at some point).

Agreed. If they want to inspire gamers, or give them an initiative to at least get to know them a wee bit. Give cards, but after achievements, and they can actually ban those who cheat for the 'chievos, to make sure people actually play that stuff (I idle them myself; the hypocrisy, I know). Card prices might adjust to the difficulty of the achievements too, so it'll feel like you actually earned something with hard work, and maybe not every card will cost like 5 cents and rarely more.

It's not a hypocrisy if you at least have an interest in the games and intend to perhaps play them one day (it seems like everyone has a backlog these days). The criticism I had was aimed at people who collect games for no other reason than merely for the cards. That sort of mentality makes zero sense to me. As far as I am concerned games are meant to be played. And unlike real collectibles it's not like you can wear them out from use. As for the cards they are just a bonus, and should not be the main attraction.

I'd have to agree, I read a lot of comments and even have people in my friendslist gasp who just collect a lot of games they never intend to play.

You left out the part about all the people who vote all of the Greenlight trash onto Steam. It's their fault too.

isn't it false advertising if you sell 8 levels, but deliver only 1?

I wonder what is the actual 'hardest but not impossible' game on Steam..? I suppose because everyone has different skills then it depends on who you are. Super Meat Boy though? Hmm.

Wings of Vi might also be a candidate. If Boshy was on Steam, we would have an easy winner. ^^

I bought Journey of the Light when it was for, how much, 0,14 EUR or so. It's a shame that it's probably a scam attempt, as the first level looks visually appealing to me.
I find it amusing to watch the debate, though, and I am very curious how is it going to turn out in the end.

Yes, it's interesting how will it end. But it appears to be just a very rude scam. Look at this (it is also linked in reddit thread, that fubarnocaps posted below)

Yes, I know about that. At first, I wanted (and still want, to some degree) to give the dev the benefit of doubt, but the longer he takes "fixing the update that screwed the game somehow" the harder it is to believe him.
If it's indeed a scam, it's quite baffling that Valve hasn't done anything about it yet :/ It would seem that a lot of people reported the game.

This is sadly funny. How doesn't Steam staff at least "test" the games before putting in store?

It was just a matter of time for this to happen, with all greenlight crap :/

Only a game is not impossible to beat unless it is programmed that way like the Pen And Teller Bus game,it just had no ending so you really it was not impossible to beat, there was just no end game.So i am not sure it could be impossible to beat since there is nothing to beat or no end game.

Everything can be solved and everything can beat if it has the means to do so,but if you program to make it impossible then it will be impossible like say a race even if you went the fastest you can in a strait line and still could not beat the given time, then the time is impossible to beat because it is set to low,but still is it an impossible to beat or just impossible because of how it was programmed,,..ahh my head hurts to much thinking.

What he means is that asian guys will never make a sh*tty game, as this "dev" made, because they do all better and faster than other people... well, this is what I understood. :p

for every thing that non-asian people do, exists a asian doing it better and faster.

"The belief that all members of one race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, so as to distinguish it as superior to another race or races..."
Hmm. Whichever way you look at it, DerangedBoar does have a point.

Just being the devil's advocate here, lol :D

i understand this point of view but we have to face it: asian (oriental) culture have much more discipline than ocidental culture. so if you use that point of view, using strictly their race (as this quote that you used), to justify "betterness" it's racist.
your devil argument has a valid point... that's why I said that racism is in peoples mind. I want to mean somethin, but the person want to digest racism, no matter what/how I say.

So the dev didn't realise the game only had one level until about 2 months after release. Hmm sounds feasible?!
At least it's finally getting the negative attention it deserves. He was scamming for long enough and he's had his run. Maybe steam will actually do something about it now?

Woah, what a scam... remember when some people were expecting what Greenlight would bring to the table with high hopes?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Edit: The hell? He even wrote a fake hints page for the second level even if it has been discovered it is just a fake/placeholder file with the same info as chapter 1? That's just shameless on his part.

So what will happen to their other game (Voxelized)? Will valve just refund the broken game and let them keep Voxelized, or will they take actions against the developers for trying to scam people and just kick them out of steam altogether?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Looks like it's just one guy so just the singular "developer". And I was wondering the same thing about Voxelized...I mean with all of this and as both a user of steam and a dev he must have broken the TOS all to hell to get banned on all fronts to keep him away for good you'd think.

Not that the game is a scam, I read the reviews weeks ago. But I didn't know the developer of this game was also the author of Voxelized.
