So, I joined only a few weeks ago, and as soon as I won something I was excited.
AT THAT POINT, I had never hosted a giveaway. So I get being new and that being a good reason for level 0 Giveaways.

My question is, how do you handle people if you ever bother to check out who joined your giveaway?
About 2/3's of the people who join mine, seem to have contributed back to SG, but 1/3 of them, have never hosted a giveaway.

I was astounded because it only took me winning 2 giveaways to NEED to do some of my own, or I would feel guilty. (Yes, my games currently have been all left over from bundles, but I'm a new sub teacher, and I'm very tight on funds this summer... I managed to get called ONCE for summer school... yay.)

Anyways... I saw users who have won $300-1000 worth of games and have NEVER hosted their own giveaway...

Do you let them continue to join your Giveaways or do you Blacklist them?

Curious cause I'm new and am looking for feedback.

Just create your giveaways with a level requirement.

I considered that, but if everyone did that, every 0 level contributor would never be able to win something.... And it took the reality of winning twice for me to want to participate in giving away myself...

I think once you hold a giveaway (and it comes back as received) you go to level 1, but I'm not sure on this.

I believe there is a minimum value, but it's so laughably low that if the game isn't a super cheap game which has been bundled (like a Humble Bundle DLC key or something) you're probably fine with just one.

Apparently I was wrong; I just checked sgtool on a user that was level 1, and the requirement is apparently $.01, with level 2 starting at $25. Makes sense, I guess? However, the numbers aren't truly double then, because otherwise there's no way to get back to $250 (because it would go 50-100-200-400, and level 5 is $250...)

The announcement about the new contributor levels states it, but it's not quite truly double because otherwise the numbers wouldn't be neat. I like neat numbers though, so I'm happy with the system.

Nope, these giveaways will get deleted and the CV won't Count. Even if they manage to go to level 1 with it, they won't stay there for a long time.

I might be wrong, but don't they only delete giveaways that didn't end, so if you made it a one hour giveaway and were lucky enough you'll get your 15%?
Anyway, doing this can get you into blacklists, which might be worse. Easier to just activate that free game, get cards (either now or in few months) and just buy cheapest game on weeklong deal.

I had 4 GA's under my belt before I won anything on here. I appreciate that not everybody can afford to give games away whenever they feel like it, but you can sell a few cards, emoticons, etc. and use that money to buy a cheap game on sale and get level 1 easy peasy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well if you're scrambling to find a few cents from steam items, it's very unlikely you would want to 'waste' that on giveaways

the main issue is so many people buy bundles & have spares, so those should be given away sometime... like mine.. i'm lazy... soon though, i only started visiting these giveaway sites in the last few weeks

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

'Waste' is definitely the wrong word in the context of a site that deals in generosity. One should either see this as a contribution towards a community of common practice, or, for those more capitalism-minded, as an investment in achieving better GAs.

the context is not here, the context was someone that has so little money that ALL they have are a few cent items on steam, why would such a person even think about giving anything away?

I see your point.
One easy way of getting a more even ratio once a person won a game:
Play the game, sell the cards, buy a cheap game, put it on steamgifts, keep the rest for yourself. Repeat the process...

You can make a steam group for that, and make a group giveaway as a work around.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, many people went this way. That's also the way things were before CV, people made groups for those who gave a lot. If CV still worked that way I'd be okay with leaving everything to work that way, but if the system has a built-in method to reward "deserving" people, I feel that people who won little are more deserving than people who gift a lot (and often have won a lot), and that should be formalised too.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There are no level 0 contributors, and it's really hard to be a level 1 contributor (giving away a $1 first tier bundle games from pretty much any bundle will probably get you up to level 2). I.e. if you take the current humble bundle, first tier is about $70 worth. Now, i'm not sure if the old "first $30 always counts as non-bundle" rule still applies, but even if it doesn't and you get only 1/5 of the value, you're more than halfway to level 2 with a single dollar...

I only make lvl2 giveaways, mainly because i don't get to contend with people who don't know how things work (don't activate gifts, don't mark as received and other annoying stuff). Anyone who has taken a couple minutes to actually make a single giveaway probably knows how everything works.

Instead of just

Just create your giveaways with a level requirement.

Which is too simple of an alternative.

Why don't you balance things out? Many (experienced) people here do it like this:

  1. Amazing expensive game? Make it available only to those who contributed. Any other game? Make it for everybody.
  2. Make private giveaways. Post on forums. That way only those who are active and bother with the forums will partake!
  3. Making trains/group GAs/puzzles etc are other alternatives to filter things down.

Hope this helps (:

The whitelist is a great way to ensure the winners are worthy of winning. Whenever I see forum posts that I like I whitelist the poster. You, for example, are already on my whitelist, so it's probably not your first good post ;-)

I also whitelist members with exceptionally good ratio, and there are plenty of those around here. Soon I'm going to switch to do only whitelist-based giveaways. I currently have around 150 people in my whitelist. When I hit 300 or 400 hundred I'll move away from public giveaways, at least for games that are supposed to be good.

i started to blacklist people with a ratio worse than 1:8 won/sent (starting with 9 won games without anything sent, so new users have a big chance to avoid it).

also, creating GAs with lv1+ is recommended. you will avoid most trouble with regifters/beggars/etc (i said most, not all).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never really cared, which is why none of my GAs have had a level requirement, and they never will.

What I do care about is wether people are more active community members or not - main reason why most of my GA's have been going through these forums instead of being public.

Really bad ratios, thank spamming, not reading descriptions and behaving rude lands people on my blacklist. I only create lvl 1+ nowadays and it basically takes a $1 bundle to get there. If they can't afford that I think they should get off this site in hope of free games and actually start making a living or playing free games etc. Maybe I'm being hard on people but isn't there some truth to where I'm coming from?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Agreed. Occasionally I'll make a totally free giveaway, but mostly I just level 1+ and pretend the people who get on my nerves don't exist! I also do reading comprehension giveaways and blacklist anyone who fails (usually the requirement is don't post thanks).

Well, while you are right, I disagree with you.

For example, I make a living, I go to work, pay my bills, food, medicine, etc. And you may not believe me, but I dont have enough money to buy a 1$ bundle (completely literal here)

Again, you are totally right but I (and Im speaking only for me instead of the thousands of users that doesnt make a GA) have it hard to get games for me. If its not easy task to get a game for me, do you think that I will spend my time in getting a game for someone else? A stranger that I dont even know? It sounds selfish and it is but when your salary is around 1.5$ per week you just cant spend money on unnecessary things, and games are not necessary

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I totally understand but you have at least made the effort and given away a few games. A lot of people on this site aren't rich but as long as you've tried to contribute something to the site it's okay in my book. Besides you've given away some good games which to me is better than giving away a high quantity of bad bundle games (which is what I do). And you do have almost 300 games on Steam too which is more than enough to last you on a rainy day. As you said games aren't a necessity which is why I don't feel bad setting my level restriction at 1.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I totally get where you are coming from, I had a little windfall of spare cash and picked up a prepaid mastercard so I could buy a few bundles... that was my limit for spending... and I'm stretching it. But in the process, I figured if I spent an additional 50 cents at DIG, I could get another set of keys which I could use... so ... that's part of what I've done.

But I get where you are coming from.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't care that much. A lot of my giveaways have level 1+ because I figure that way users know the site and there's less chance of having to deal with user error, but I don't mind if people have bad ratios, as long as they aren't jerks. At one point I too was a leech, and then I started my bundle addiction and had to get rid of keys somehow...

Personally I dont care much about it, mostly because I have been (and currently I am) in the place of typical guy that doesnt have enough money to buy games gift them to strangers.

Now that you mentioned it I started looking at people who joined my GA and started blacklisting those who appear too greedy. But also whitelisting the really generous people.
Kinda regret I made my first one free for all. Hope it will go to someone deserving, as I actually bought it full price.
I will also only hold Level 1+ GAs from now on. And maybe more whitelist and forum ones in the future. We'll see.

I came here to spread a little joy. I don't care who wins my games or what they do with them. I haven't given away the most expensive of games and a lot of them I have given away were bundled, but the point is, people should be far less concerned about how many other games people have won and given away and take a little more joy in spreading around some fun that others may not be able to afford on their own.

Don't judge people, judge only yourself.

Maybe that's when they first started out and only wanted to boost their level to join even more GAs? Because from then it seems to have been all reaping and no more sowing for them. I have been giving setting a level requirement equal to my own level (give or take a few) as I've been going along here. It does a couple of things for me:

  1. The higher I set the level, the fewer leeches get my games.

  2. The higher I set the level, the more it encourages me to give more games away.

Do I feel bad for those who can't enter my giveaways? No. It's not hard to gain levels here. Even donating a couple of bucks to get a bundle or two will get you to level 2. Yes, I understand that a lot of people don't have jobs or an income to buy games. But creating level 0 giveaways only encourages complacency and people to make scripts to click the buttons for them.

The way I "handle" those who have never done a GA is that most of my giveaways have a minimum level requirement, with the occasional "open to everyone" giveaway. The real reason however, is to filter out the ungrateful leeches who would enter for anything and trade their winnings away as soon as they receive them.

There is no shortage of level 0 giveaways as everyone gives with a different philosophy and there are many who are of the opinion that those who have contributed in the past should do it out of generosity anyway and don't need special treatment, or that they simply don't need to win as much as others who can't afford to make a giveaway.

As long as there are a wide variety of users giving with various mindsets, the community will keep thriving.

Honestly I don't care, I give away games because I have the option to give away some games, I don't need them and I don't care what people do with them. If a person that received my game won't give away a game in his life, then it's fine, it's part of this site's system. There will be people that come here simply because they want to get some free games. If the site worked in a "fair" way, then the site would not allow people to enter giveaways unless they balance their giveaway count. At this point, wouldn't this site be called SteamTrading? Cause all you do is give and receive an equal value at that point.
