Hello there, I'm back with more! But this time there's no soundtracks puzzle (sorry for the disappointment).
Instead, I, again, made up something different than usual.

So, you hang around the forum all day and all, and you think that you know everything and everyone on Steamgifts, huh?

Well then, here's a puzzle for you.
Ten questions. You must guess the username based on the description I give you on every question.

Are you up to the task? Then prove it! :D

Fellow Steamgifters...

Welcome to Jbond's Guess The Steamgifts User's Name 1.

So, how does this puzzle work?

Quite easy, actually.
There are a total of ten questions in this puzzle. On each of these questions, I will give you a short description or reference about a well-known Steamgifts user. You simply have to type out the user's exact username from Steamgifts to solve the question.

If you can only remember parts of a user's name, you may use this page to search the user (for example, you can only remember me as jbond, so if you search "jbond", you'll find my full name, "jbondguy007").

What else should I know?

All I ask of you is to use your common sense. As always, don't post hints, answers, or anything related to the puzzle in this thread (or anywhere else on Steamgifts).
Talking about the puzzle in the giveaway(s) at the end of the puzzle is perfectly okay, however. ^^

The game being given away is Major Mayhem, ending in two days.

PUZZLE

POLL

On which question do you need a hint the most?

SOLUTION:

  1. DeltaBladeX
  2. Student123
  3. Khalaq
  4. ozo2003
  5. CarlEric
  6. cg
  7. CommissarStrayed
  8. JoaoWho
  9. oddllama
  10. MuahahahaMeow

HINTS:

Question 3: Come on, seriously? One of the most known forum user here, has a QR code for a profile picture.
Question 5: Huh, let's see... I don't even know what to say as a hint... This user has a portrait of Charlemagne as a profile picture, if it helps. Also, username starts with a "C".
Question 9: A quick forum search should help you with that. This user's name starts with "O".
Question 10: A cat. A maniac laugh. Username. If you still can't make the connection with this hint, I don't know what else to do. :P

I am fully aware that this puzzle is probably EXTREMELY hard for most users here. However, that is why it is likely that I will be posting multiple hints soon enough.

And yet again, as usual... Hints will be posted here in time, so if you are stuck, come back later and maybe you'll be able to solve it!
The answers to the puzzle will be posted in this thread once the giveaway has ended.
Please bump the thread when you're done! :)

I should probably mention that the idea popped from SpankyPie's SPANKY train giveaway thread. When I saw the "Community" train, I though it was a bunch of questions about the Steamgifts community. "Nice, I'm gonna be so good at solving this one!" - Disappointment. :(

But it gave me the idea of creating this small puzzle, so yeah. Thanks SpankyPie! :P

All of these questions represent one user each. That one is a bit harder since the user hasn't been around here anymore lately. :P

So for clarification, you'd want to use correct grammar on that question. I also got confused when I saw "they." So change, "When they get drunk, get ready to see games rain down upon the Steamgifts forum," to "When he gets drunk, get ready to see games rain down upon the Steamgifts forum."

That isn't bad grammar, that's generalizing the user's gender. To avoid using "he" and "she", I used "they".
I might edit it if it causes too much confusion, however.

Yeah, sadly you can't do that because you're using a plural pronoun for a singular antecedent. Oh grammar. I get your point though

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What's a singular antecedent ? Could you explain exactly what is wrong in this case ?
(english isn't my first language)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well an antecedent is the noun that a pronoun refers to. If you say, "Bob went to the store. He bought cookies," the pronoun is "He" and the antecedent is "Bob" because "He" refers to "Bob". In this case, because "Bob" is one person and is singular, it is a singular antecedent. As a result, you need the pronoun to agree with the antecedent, so the pronoun has to be singular as well."He," is a singular pronoun, since it refers to only one person, but "They" is plural pronoun, since it refers to multiple people.

In the example, "When they get drunk, get ready to see games rain down upon the Steamgifts forum," saying "they" is incorrect because you are only talking about ONE person. You cannot use a plural pronoun, "they," to talk about only one person. You have to use a singular pronoun, such as "he," "she," or "it."

But I've always been told than when the gender of the person you are referring to is unknown, it is better to use they. Is that wrong then ?

EDIT : there's a wiki page called Singular they

Singular they is the use of they, or its inflected or derivative forms, such as them, their, or themselves, to refer to a single person or an antecedent that is grammatically singular. It typically occurs with an antecedent of indeterminate gender

Beat me to it, I wanted to quote Merriam Webster

They is perfectly fine and

often used with an indefinite third person singular antecedent

Oh cool, I didn't know this, so I learned something useful from steamgifts today =) YAY

Won't use it though, since it really sounds weird to me =)

You are wrong about this. As TempeteJoachim said, "they" is commonly used as a gender-neutral way of saying "he/she". It can be used in both cases.

Just saying, I'm not wrong about this. It's actually a really common question on the SAT and I learned about this in school courses, and it came up on the SAT preparation guide. They can only be using singularly in informal speech. It's technically not grammatically correct to use "they" singularly, just like any other slang term in the English language. When writing or saying something formally, you would have to say "he or she" for a gender-unknown singular subject. I understand why you would use "they" in the quiz though.

I don't know. I'm still pretty skeptical about this.

Can you provide us with sources supporting this ?

From Merriam-Webster:

"The use of they, their, them, and themselves as pronouns of indefinite gender and indefinite number is well established in speech and writing, even in literary and formal contexts"

From Oxford Dictionaries:

"Some people object to the use of plural pronouns in this type of situation on the grounds that it’s ungrammatical. In fact, the use of plural pronouns to refer back to a singular subject isn’t new: it represents a revival of a practice dating from the 16th century. It’s increasingly common in current English and is now widely accepted both in speech and in writing.

From the Wikipedia article for They:

"The singular pronoun they is even found in formal or official texts. For example, a 2008 amendment to the Canadian Criminal Code contains the following text:
if a peace officer has reasonable grounds to believe that, because of their physical condition, a person may be incapable of providing a breath sample... (subparagraph 254(3)(a)(ii))"

Well you could use this user or something like that, not that it matters much as there's already a hint here.

Well, "they" is gener-neutral. It could also be a "her", not only a "him", that's why it says "they". Not confusing at all, in my opinion.

Edit: I got ninja'd.
