I accidentally activate a win on a family account myself. It "clicked" in my head as soon as I did it I had made a mistake. I know the rules and since I had marked it received I went and bought the game for my account to ensure it was good. Basically lost the free GA, but saved my reputation. It happens.

Check My friend has already redeemed my gift, can I still get a refund?. If the gifter bought it from Steam store then it may help you. He may/can request a refund and take his money back and buy a new copy. :P

That's certainly an interesting FAQ article.. considering that..
Staff was very clear when I contacted them over it, and again when my friend contacted them for another purchase:
Steam does not give out refunds for gifts once they've been activated on other people's accounts, period.
Now the question is, which end of Valve managed to fuck things up, this time :X

if you send a gift to another person and that person redeems it, you cannot refund anymore (i believe).

My friend's game: Didn't load up for either of us, so we got all of 5 minutes of playtime on that same day of purchase. He put in the refund request immediately, they refused to refund either copy of the 2-pack, despite the game being broken.
My 4-pack: I'd given away one copy at this point, and we'd gotten 1 hour 15 minutes of co-op. On the 3rd day from purchase, I attempted to refund because neither of us liked it or wanted to play it again.
In both instances the representative told us they don't offer refunds on any purchase where gift copy has been activated, under any circumstance. :/

Yeah, i got it when i re-read " Steam does not give out refunds for gifts once they've been activated on other people's accounts, period. " from your previous reply. :\
The funny part is they even don't bother to remove it from the refund section when they don't accept it anymore. What's the point of misleading your customers?!

Why unmark it, he/she received the game. Thats not really fair for the ga creator.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think HA66 didn't suggest to permanently mark it as not received but since OP doesn't have the game on his account he has 7 days to mark received and can use that time to buy or trade for it while at the same time not having his account flagged yet.

I understand that yes but still. Game was sent and received, something about taking responsibility for your own actions.

I agree that the polite way to handle this would be to inform the gifter that you messed up activating the gift and won't mark as received for a few additional day but I doubt anybody would refuse that since technically it is within the winners rights to take up to 1 week to mark his wins as received.
Comment has been collapsed.
In my opinion once you marked a game as received it should be permanent, but that's just my opinion and is not important at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just to clarify nobody suggested marking the game permanently as not received (that would be Misuse of Giveaway Feedback and a Permaban offense). Like I said in my comment below the polite thing to do would be to inform the gifter about the delay in feedback but winners have up to 1 week to mark their wins as received (for example people who use SG mostly on weekends...).
Last summer one of the winners from a event I ran was on vacation so after I mananged to contact him and he told me he won't be able to activate in time I gave him some extra time. I sent the game after 2 weeks, he activated and marked it as received and no harm done.

^ Yeah, what Sundance85 said, i meant to say. :P
Obviously, you need first to talk with gifter about your mistake and complain to him that marked as received while you didn't activate the game on your account will makes misunderstanding and because you want to fix your mistake, you need to unmark it for a few days ( in this case maximum 7 days ) till you find a way to activate the game on your account.

Imagine the giveaway creator having a CV of 5.99, then LatifTP marks his ga as received and he is Level 6 and starts entering L6 ga's and one hour later he is back to 5.99. I would call that screwing over big time even if it is for a few days.

Seriously? Please read the rules and guidelines and return to this conversation once you've done so.

His profile is clean so he must be ^^
Maybe he ment: Dont sync account, win another copy and you'll be fined.
Comment has been collapsed.
Why should the gifter offer a copy at all? Why are we even on this site?
Maybe the person making the giveaway is a nice person, have you thought about that?
Comment has been collapsed.
The person that made the giveaway can still be a nice person that doesn't have another copy of it, or has plans to make another giveaway with the other copy instead of giving the same person the same game twice.
Sometimes we make mistakes, they happen. However in my opinion it seems a bit harsh to ask someone that already gave you something to fix your mistake for you.
Asking for another copy would be a waste, since the other copy can give entertainment and joy to a 2nd person instead of being used on someone that already has the game but in the wrong account.

Looks like I'm mean person, 'cause I wouldn't do that.
But yeah, next time when I win "Fallout 4" I'll give my friend the key, and ask GA creator for another one, as "I activated the game on wrong account..." insert Puss in Boots eyes
Of course I'm not implying it's like this in OP's case, sure shit happens, but really that another copy suggestion is preposterous unless you were joking and I didn't get that :P

i have 5 :) smurf accounts or Buisness Accounts if you trade things. A inventory can only hold 1000 items so you have to open more accounts
Comment has been collapsed.
1000 items of which kind? I have several thousand Community items in my inventory and never had a problem.
But nevertheless there are legit reasons for smurf accounts like farming cards from promotional freebies.
Comment has been collapsed.
basicly every game beside the Steam Inventory what means mostly CSGO, Dota and TF2 you can stack it before with a trick to 2000 items but now with the new market rules it is a pain in the ass to do that.
Comment has been collapsed.
I see. I only have one or two Inventory pages of those so I never noticed. Thanks for clarifying :)

Abuse free giveaways on gleam.io or other sites, farming trading cards for your extra keys from 100x bundled games, trading reasons, scamming people, needing to hide your identity, having smurf accounts like for CS:GO, being vac banned in a game on your account, buying games from different regions, having different accounts for your family members, asking for a ban on SG?
these are the reasons I can think of...

Playing games you don't want others to know you own, multiple personalities.

Reasons that come to mind:

I have a second account that someday will be for my 4-year old. Obviously she doesn't "use" it yet but she will one day (I hope). And obviously there's no SG account with it. But I can use it to farm cards from games I have more than one copy of...not that I can trade or sell the cards any more...

Can the creator ask for a refund and then rebuy it? If they are willing to do so ofc (they don't have to bother, since it's your fault, not theirs.)

Could go either way :P

you can't do that anyway. the "not received" option should be greyed out for the first 7 days.

Buy a new copy of game, activate it on main account, or else...

I've make the same mistake, 1st- i've contacted the GA creator to see if he/she had a problem with that and will report me and said no, 2nd- sent a ticket explaining my mistake and told me that i can buy the game or he can put some note in my profile so other admins can't suspend me.
Nearly 5 months later i bought the game and replied his answer in my ticket and the admin closed said ticket.
Sorry my english.
Comment has been collapsed.
I sent the ticket. Aparently the note on the profile can only be seen by admins, he explained that if someone report me i have to face the 5 days suspension anyway.
Basically the note is for regular profile scans from the admins.
EDIT: I had the game marked as received even before talking the GA creator. He just wanted to level up so he said that as long i marked as received, he won't say it to anyone.
