I don't think we have enough events that apply to the whole site (at least to my knowledge). I was thinking about a gaming competition, tournament thingy when SG was down and it was not a bad idea at all. All we need are:

The sponsors:

  • let's cut to the chase here, without proper prizes the event would not be attractive to a lot of people

  • we need steam prizes, ranging from steam items (some TF2 items though the game and its items are not in my expertise) and giftable steam games.

  • some people need to "fuel" the event (I think I can as long as this happens in the summer when I have a summer job but there should be more than 1 person to actually fund the whole thing)

  • there are 2 options: private giveaway on SG, which means there could be multiple winners who get to receive links of private giveaways, or keys are given away to individuals (no more randomness which is kinda nice given there are enough resource/fund/games)

The players:

  • It should kinda be limited, maybe a public event then some individuals would be picked either by their performance or their gaming etiquette (I really respect people with good manners so I would prefer giving some of them the chances, though there should be a team/ group of people on SG to pick those players)

  • CV requirement is debatable, depends on what the prize is.

  • It will be mentioned again but the players should be ranged from avid FPS to casual platform experts or even RTS professional gamers (this means there will be more than one tournament with different base games)

The means:

  • Steam. That's it. you should have your own computers/ monster rig ready.

The games: here are my suggestions for what games should be played. Again, I'm not an expert in all these games so how to make a tournament out of them should be discussed and made by people with more experiences playing them more than me.

edit: a game with spectator mode is strongly preferable :)

  • Call of Duty sth (not a big fan or an avid players, but never a bad choice for a competition)

  • Team Fortress 2 (not in my expertise either but I do know the game can be competitive at times)

  • Civ 5 (a cool game though requires a huge amount of time for a multi match, very unlikely unless players can figure out a long time gap in their schedule)

  • CS:GO (I think there should be rules like no buy in 2nd match or no OP 'till ...match. Again, just my opinion)

  • Portal 2 (user-made puzzles are always good tools to test a person's wit. though we might need someone to make decent puzzles)

  • some other good multi game (perhaps guns of icarus? I would prefer Chivalry)

  • Payday the heist or L4D2 (I actually prefer payday since it's kinda a harder game to master but there are annoying things in that game)

  • Worms Revolution (I actually don't have the game, my friends aint into that game which really discouraged me -_- but it definitely is a fun game to play or to compete)

  • a racing game (either a need for speed title or grid)

  • dawn of war 40k (just because I love the space marines though I don't think it's a good choice for competition, people who still are playing that game would be too OP)

  • Sonic sega all star (have played it at a friend's house, it's as good as mario kart, definitely a good casual competitive game)

  • Killing Floor (actually never played but almost all my friends play it so I assume it's pretty good :)

  • some bundled games as comfort prizes perhaps :)

that's all for now =D

again, this is only my idea and thoughts, so here's a poll. It'd be really nice of you to vote or make comments abt this. Such events would take some time to prepare but I think the SG community is awesome enough to pull them.

and sorry for my english or I was being too confusing, I was typing quickly so I can go to sleep for tomorrow's early classes :)

It's not a terrible idea, but I think you're being too ambitious. It should be limited to 1 or 2 games because each game has to be monitored and validated and each game will need different rules and regulations. I'd be surprised if you found people willing to involve all those games. And how do you "win" in co-op games like Left 4 Dead 2/Payday The Heist/Killing Floor? It just gets very confusing very quickly and we haven't even decided who's donating the giveaways yet.

yeah, that's why I just throw out as many options as I can and then downsize it to an affordable amount. but you're right, a huge amount of resources are required for this kind of thing

No Red Orchestra 2?

Regardless, I'd be up for some friendly competition. We don't always have to play for prizes though.

oops, should have added that. I don't think there's a steam gaming group for SG, I know there's one but people don't actually look for people to play games with on that group

Yeah, very little "gaming groups" actually have people actively searching for a game to play.

I'll act as the person who looks good. Face it, my giveaway events are popular. My name is needed on this. :P

I actually was thinking of messaging you on steam and asked you for advice on this first, but SG was down so I forgot what came after the X....silly me.

Ha.

Well, not sure how good I'd really be with a multiplayer gaming event topic, but getting it organized and interested players before it is scheduled to start is a good idea. My Fortix topic was planned and ready before I even made it, along with other users I knew were interested in joining in. Knowing at least a few interested people first would make things easier.

yeah, was thinking abt inviting you and some other experienced SG users into a group and beta test the whole idea first to see how feasible it is for a a whole site event. it's even better if player can stream it though it's too much to ask since not everyone has good internet

Nice idea. Think it's too ambitious though.
Would probably work better with smaller groups.
It might work if you somehow have different heats, or rounds in smaller groups. This could also take into account time differences.

hmm, maybe I should invite like 10-15 people and let them test the whole idea first then apply it the whole site later. it'd be nice to have this kind of event for an anniversary of the site :)
