So are you deciding on what to replace Norton with, or is this just an issue you can shrug off?

Uninstalling Norton and I'm looking for a new one. :/ I'd rather not have to redownload all my .exes every time I want to play a game.

I can't make any decent comparison, but I currently use avast! antivirus. So far I'm satisfied with the coverage (at no cost), and it has a silent/gaming mode for PC gamers.

I used to like it, and I use it on my laptop, the free version. But lately, it's been very intrusive with many popups about other products from avast, and those scary msgs about how you might be unprotected... I don't like that. Maybe the paid version is not like that?

That what made me change from Avast! to Avira. This, and the fact that the voice of the updates nearly made me have an heart attack (that's for playing horror games with a headset and sound at max...)

why not just use the default Windows Defender. It does a good job

'cause he doesnt find any viruses? :D
Of course they are free.

Lavasoft provides a nice free service called Ad-Aware AntiVirus. Worth checking out.

What would be your reasoning for suggesting this?
Anyways, Nod32 + Malwarebytes has been aces for me.

There's no point and it will potentially interfere with things. You can just run malwarebytes once a month or so. Every time I've actually had a problem malwarebytes fixed it, and usually norton/avg/mcafee didn't find the problem or only found secondary viruses. Having it always running is an unnecessary drain on resources. Having it run a scan without a prompt can screw up what you're doing. If you use anything but the most... basic and mainstream stuff you will have to constantly be making various exceptions. If you possess the skills to set this all up and make the exceptions and everything, then you should possess more than enough knowledge to simply not get viruses 99% of the time. And if you're doing something that has an incredibly high risk of receiving a virus then you should gtfo or run a virtual machine.
Furthermore most of these antivirus companies engage in predatory advertising. Preying upon people who are uninformed and believe that there are constantly people actively trying to hack into your personal files.
I recently found out after upgrading my mom's OS that Norton antivirus, in addition to requiring a yearly subscription, actually charges you per download. And I thought the company was actually respected. So that tells you something about the antivirus industry.

Yeah, and don't bother putting an alarm on your car, either, and it's ok to leave the keys in it. Just get a LoJack so you can hopefully find it after it's stolen before it's stripped or taken out of the country.
If you possess the skills to find your car after it's stolen, then you should possess more than enough knowledge to simply park it where it doesn't get stolen in the first place. And, if you're parking in a really bad, crime ridden area, you should gtfo or drive a crappier car.

Bingo. This combo right here. I wholeheartedly second this recommendation. Been aces for me for years as well.

I hated it because it was slow as hell, only offered me a trial after their free trial run and wanted me to actually pay for their garbage service when there were free antivirus programs that work better.
I like Avast by the way if you are looking for free programs. Otherwise i cant help ya.

Microsoft Security Essentials + Malware Bytes been using it for years now and 0 viruses/malware/adware + low resource use.

+1 for MSE, free and simple. And also is low of resources, which is great on PC's like mine which are slow as hell.

I also use MSE and MalwareBytes (paid version of the latter). From time to time, I also do a scan with Spybot Search & Destroy. There are very few things these three cannot handle.

There are new viruses found every single day. What would be suspicious would be if it didn't update multiple times a week.

I always use malware bytes(The free trial) when my computer needs cleaned, and after I've cleaned it up I start running Avast, and I usually don't get anything. But I decided to stop downloading Avast after the 10th time I had to factoy reset my computer because it ran out of space and wouldn't let me do anything but go to the settings

It's a great AV for everyone, not just gamers. While not free, it's worth every penny.

I don't, and haven't ever used an anti-virus ever sense I was 11 and had my own computer, years and years ago.
It's been 5years or so now and I've logged tens of thousands of hours online doing various things, and I have never once got a virus.
Unless you understand nothing about the internet, use an awful browser, download random things, looks at porn (on awful websites at that), and more, you should not need an anti-virus.
Not only have I not needed one, but everyone I know, adult or teen, has gotten viruses when they've had anti-virus things, and had issues because of it. Yet they don't use the computer much, so it should be less likely. Theoretically.
While I won't go as far as saying anti-viruses harm you directly, they certainly do not help you from my observations.
If you knew anything about viruses you'd understand the main flaw in anti-viruses anyways, and if you don't, before you blow your money on some anti-virus or download some "free" one and re-download it every 10days, think, if you have anti-bodies to fight the common cold, why does it keep returning? Because it adapts. Viruses adapt, and just like your immune system your anti-virus is NEVER ahead of the virus.
And just as your immune system improves, as does everyone's immune systems improve, the cold, the virus, seems to go away. That strand dies. That coding type, that attack method, that program, whatever it was that was discovered and is now being protected against thanks to your anti-virus is no longer used, as it will never break through the anti-virus.
Would you spread a petty trojan that was developed in 2008 and suspect success or would you invest a few hundred dollars, or a few hours of time making your own, or buying your own virus to walk right past the anti-virus, the immune-system of today. and kill the victim, to have complete power over another persons computer?
Of course the above isn't the only reason why I believe anti-virus is defective, but it's a large part of it.
To launch thousands of petty attacks and get minimal results and be flagged right away simply does not make sense when you could infect almost everyone who comes in contact with you?

I dont use antivirus for about 8 years now. I had only 2 viruses for those 8 years. And I knew that I was installing them... (downloaded something from torrents that I thought that could be infected). So, if you dont want virus, you just dont risk. And how I know that I dont have virus? Once a half-year I install avast and give it a full scan! Thats why :)
BTW: I now using Linux MINT so I dont give a shit about viruses ;)

I'm using only MSE but also an Anti-Virus Live CD (c't Desinfec't) once in a while to check.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a little bit of protection, especially when it's free and most of the time working in the background.
You might be able to do everything you can to avoid malware, but a little bit of injected malicious javascript or a compromised ad service on an otherwise legit page, even something as simple as an accidental click on that sketchy link/email/ad is all it takes for a drive-by download to start - something that perhaps a little bit of heuristic detection could have prevented or at the very least tell you it happened (nothing says you've got malware quite like a forcibly disabled AV).
Of course, browsing via something like Sandboxie is the best way to avoid that.

I also don't use antivirus, but I watch TONS of porn.

Well, I can recommend Avast, I had the full version, but it's not really worth it. (who needs a military grade data shredder o_o) but yeah, Even the free version is more than enough.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/ are the only ones really you should be asking this.
Kaspersky if you don't mind paying, Avast if you don't basically as these are the top of the foodchain every time and not just once.

until now...
Anyone have any advice on what to get now?
Edit: Well, I deleted Norton and got Malwarebytes along with using Windows Defender again since some people said it's okay.
