So I got skyrim in a giveaway, played a lot of it, and now, some days after, I get this message:

Clicky

Hm, I'm not sure about what I should do now, never experienced this before...

Whoever bought it for you did a chargeback through their bank. You should probably contact the giveaway maker and mark it as not received.

So, that means there's no chance for me to get my game?

Nope, your game is permanently removed from your account. Contact the giveaway maker.

I'll try to contact him on steam then, he looks to be still active, but he unfriended me for some reason.

Make a support ticket too showing it was charged back please.

A support ticket here in steamgifts, you mean?

Yes. It also appears he's done a chargeback on every giveaway he's made. We will be permabanning him.

Oh, ok, thanks for the quick answer.

It's a shame though, I loved that game in the few hours I could play it.

You can't do a chargeback if you got the game. You can only do that AFAIK if you prove, that you didn't get the item/game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, you can chargeback steam via paypal/bank and claim it was "stolen" when it really wasn't but this would result in your account being locked down.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So, you tellin me, we can buy every game in the internet and then return it back, after you finished it and get bored with multi?!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Uh no, when you charge it back your steam account gets completely frozen. He was trying to boost his contributor value and then chargeback hoping no one would notice.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then he can't play the games he wins in Contributor giveaways anyway right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

These charged back games were bought with different account than his main, so he can play with no consequences IMO.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd imagine your credit card company would have something to say if they start seeing that all of your chargebacks were unjustified. Wouldn't be surprised if you could be charged with some sort of fraud for it either.

You can ask for refund as long as it is within a certain amount of days since the purchase, and the game has never been played (or just a few minutes / under an hour).

As Yatterman says, Steam doesn't tolerate chargebacks and will lock the account suject to it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The game was bought with money from stolen credit card. Its real owner got refund, so you lost your game.

Also, this is a very common situation with many games, especially Minecraft.

Comment has been collapsed.

That sucks.

I remember seeing a lot of topics (on official steam forums) about Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim around New Year, when someone purchased lots of those "most wanted" games, traded them for expensive TF2 items and then, when people traded them further, the entire chain of trade got messed up, with people who were third or fifth link getting their Skyrim revoked. Never heard of something like that happening here.

Yeah, and I thought I was lucky for winning it...

That's too bad I suppose.

He changed names, I think. To be fair, when he sent the gift via email, I didn't even notice the name, I got so happy I clicked blindly to accept.

That's interesting, because he didn't use that name on his profile. So, he bought it from another account or he got these keys from some thief for couple bucks.

I remember when this guy was posting these giveaways in chat. We questioned him about why he was becoming so generous all of a sudden. He claimed he made more than $2,000 a week and didn't care.

Could smell the BS a mile away, but wasn't quite expecting this.

I had a bit of doubt but, Skyrim was so tentative >.<

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A lot of people make more than $2k a week though so it's not all that strange. I mean, I know for a fact almost everyone in my office is making more than that right now and this company employs 1000s.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

We were calling BS on the fact he had entered only 12 giveaways and his first giveaways were for two copies of Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Saints Row: The Third, and Max Payne 3 all in the span of 5 minutes.

Where the hell do you work? And is your company hiring?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most skilled electrical/computer engineers in the US, a lot of other engineers, lawyers, doctors, etc. make at least that much, if not significantly more.

It isn't really absurd, it just takes a lot of hard work and an education.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah it's really not. I was already making $2300 a week back in 2000-2001 as a network engineer. For my area (NY) that's not even much money because of the high cost of living.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's more than the national average but yeah, it's only a lot of money if you live with your parents or have really cheap rent & living expenses. For anyone with a decent mortgage, family to support etc. that amount of money per week still probably wouldn't allow you to give away ~$400 of games in such a short period of time. Your lifestyle is like a gas, in that it tends to expand to fill your income.
