Double Fine Adventure page on Kickstarter

At the time of writing, there's just under five hours left to support the project!
And a live stream from Double Fine HQ happens in three hours! (Ustream link)

Tim Schafer is the man who brought some of my favorite games into existence, including my all-time favorite, Grim Fandango.
Ron Gilbert's a frickin' genius, and also helped bring one of my other favorites into existence, Total Annihilation.
Also, Double Fine Adventure will be on Steam.

I wish I had 100$ to throw at them, a boxed copy would be awesome. But a digital copy will have to do.
It'll be an interesting ride following the project. =)

And I actually didn't know Ron Gilbert had any involvement in Total Annihilation, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Didn't really noticed this yet! Thanks!
Really thinking about donating 15$ now to get it. Should I? :P

You should, I pledged 30$ the first day even though I really should keep the money, but you really can't say no to Schafer and Gilbert.

Too bad I can't spare 14 bucks, would really like to have access to beta and not wait until this game will be on some -75% sale. Glad they made so far.

That's totally crazy.
They "asked" for 400k dollars. And they got ~3,35 millions !

Bye bye publishers, we don't need you anymore! :)

Unknown developers trying out an indie game would never have nearly the level of success of even their initial goal.

Yea you're right there. But it still seems to work. Look at "No Time To Explain" for example. Their goal was 7.000, they got 26,068$. :)

It's quite interesting actually. After Double Fine's involvement with Kickstarter, most indie games there gained a boost in supporters.

3,35 million is enough for a good size adventure game, but for an "AAA" game you need something between 10 and 60 million depending on the production values will take several years to develop. It's not really plausible that people would fund those types of games this way.
This kind of funding will probably only really be possible for smaller projects that already have a very dedicated audience. But it is a milestone, and it really shows that if a large community is passionate about something, it can happen.

Citation needed

I googled and found that GTA 4 is the highest budgeted game at 100 mil. Before that was Shenmue for the dreamcast at 70 million. How how was it that up until 2008, a 1999 game cost more to make than your average game?

Citation for what?
It really all comes down to how many people work on the game and for how long. A dev team can be anywhere from one person to hundreds of people. If you need external people like voice actors, extra artists and musicians that adds to the budget as well.
