I have been strolling through steamgifts today for some time, and there have been tons of Shadow Harvest: Phantom Ops giveaway farms apart from others... I agree that ppl should give away games so others have a chance but doing it to rack up contributor value is just wrong... Just saw an example on a similar thread where a guy racked up 120$+ value solely on Phantom Ops!
What do you guys think? :D

-Edit 1: People seem to discuss the general giveaway... My question was more oriented towards Contributor Whoring and the abuse of sales some people do, not individuals who give away games for the sake of others :L

I say let it ride. It benefits the community to have games posted, even if they're at a ridiculous sale price. TBH, I think the whole bundle reduction for contrib keeps those games from being posted more often.

It's "useful" because there are still people that want it, or else there would not be entries in the giveaways.

Your, and similar, complaints seem to often be thinly-veiled complaints that people are giving away X game rather than Y and Z games that you would rather have.

This. Spoken like a true champion. As I stated before, if it was Skyrim for $1 no one would care. Just because it isn't a AAA title doesn't mean someone out there doesn't want it.

There are a lots of people who would enter Bad Rats or Big Trucks given the chance. Sadly, not making these 2 games bundle status just shafts people buying real games and makes them less likely to contribute in the future, IMHO.

of course if they snooped slightly more it'd be obvious you weren't doing it to get into better giveaways cheap or whatever/ 7 games won 167 given away clearly making a profit no matter how cheap those games were. not boosting rep to get into better givaways or whatever some people apparently do lol.

the ones so concerned about clicking through a flood of a specific game can easily filter it with steamgifts+(and the ones mining contribution value need to get a girl or something.
(but I'm not about to look a gift game in the mouth who cares where they got it(also don't really get why we care about giving bundles tho so must be missing something)))

By that reasoning, DotA 2 and Metro 2033 should still be on list for 20 points. And your reasoning is wrong, game farmers make people giving non-ridiculously reduced games more likely to stop giving or switch to farming, too, so less motivation if anything.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

perhaps it does.. I guess it depends on how you play this site. If you are just truely giving, contrib means nothing. If you are rewarding the better gifters, then eitherway you are going to set the contrib higher.
..
The reason people are boosting is most likely to be able to gain access to the better giveaways. Truth is though, if you want to get into the better giveaways, you are better off contrib legit and finding a nice group. I don't think leeching will work very good for the best games.
..
If you want to leach Shadow Harvest.. why not? Its a cheap game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Everything has down sides. Most people are boosting by a hundred, maybe two hundred bucks. People with higher contrib are usually longer term members and legit. But there is no guarantee.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess there's two sides to it. If it were Skyrim for $1 no one would be saying boo (or would they?) but because its a shit game(s) its a big deal.
..
Here's another way to look at it.. I think most of us Agree that Shadow Harvest (could be) is a shit game, but what about other great titles that have low value. If we are to NERF shit games are we going to Boost Great CHEAP titles? .. What line are we drawing here?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

More people would be saying boo. as it is with a $20 game for only $51 you could be this weeks top contributor at almost a thousand(well 885). with a $60 game for $1 it'd only inflate faster for less.
they aren't saying they don't want these games they're upset it makes their own contributions look like birdseed for half what it cost them to get that score. less than the cost of skyrim to appear to have given 15x what the guy who gave skyrim.

why is it so f'ing wrong..?
they are contributing - if they are only doing to have a higher contributor value, so what
the problem, it seems is that the value to expense ratio is what's wrong but I don't see a way to really fix that
if the system could be improved to know if a game was purchased by itself at its "value" or as part of a $3 bundle and give contributor value accordingly then there would be no problem - but that may or may not be easily done

personally - it just doesn't matter enough to get worked up over

The farming caused the bundles to go away. It looks like they had to add the higher price games to new deals, by themselves, because they ran out of the $1 ones.

I feel bad for all the people that missed out on the bundles due to all of the grabs that were going on. Luckily, I caught it when it first went up and grabbed the bundles for myself, but I am guessing quite a few people thought they would last longer than that. Now they either have to fork over more money for single games or wait around for them to drop again. Indie Gala should just place a limit of one per account, then the problem would be solved for the future.

Of course, they can always bid on the games. There are certainly enough giveaways going on.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, we are the bad guys and there's so many customers that missed on those great, amazing and magical deals that they won't be able to live their lives without buying Crazy Machines and Shadow Harvest.

You're making it sounds like they're some martyrs and we're executors. Lawlz.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well... Someone is blowing what I said out of proportion for attention or defensiveness, I can't decide... Judging by how many games you bought there, I'm guessing defensiveness.

I'm not even sure where the martyrs comment came from. I was saying the blame wasn't here, it was there for not placing a limit on it. You went and got all defensive, for nothing.

Of course. The question has to be asked. If you think so poorly of these games, why did you buy so many of them? Surely you wouldn't buy crap games for your giveaways, so it has to be to exploit the contribution system. What else makes sense?

As for the magical deals thing, they were fine enough deals and I think if someone wanted them, it would have been nice if they had been able to get them. As I stated, IndieGala should place a limit of one per account, then everyone can get some. If they have some left at the end, they can just extend the sale. It certainly isn't benefiting people if the bundles last ten seconds because the same people are buying up the dollar games to exploit on giveaway sites. Especially now that they figured out how easy it is to do it. Either it will have to change on the giveaway sites or on IndieGala (And others).

I wrote what I wrote because those accusations are pathetic. You got all of this stuff so mixed up and seems like you don't understand how stores and marketing works. I'm not going to explain that for the 100th time. Read my other posts in this thread and other ones and then maybe you'll understand that it is what it is.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt I am the one that doesn't understand this.

If you think that GalaStore intended for a few select people to buy up the $1 games and not get the other stuff in the bundles, then you need to go and take an economics class. They lost out on potential customers and on bigger sales. They were stuck with other games that they weren't going to price down that much. That was not good business for them.

I have read your other posts. They are defensive with a basic lack of understanding of business and economics. You also said that I made accusations in my first post, which never had any. If you think pointing out the fact that the people scooping up the $1 games ended the bundles early is an accusation, then you might have a problem with paranoia or something.

If there is something lost in translation between here and Poland, then I apologize. Otherwise, I can't really do much for you. Your posts don't seem to be all that useful.

This is a mostly unique situation where the cheap games took out the actual pack. What I originally wrote about had nothing to do with contribution value, it was all about how the decision to do it impacted others looking to buy the bundles. If you buy packs or bundles elsewhere, they may or may not have a limited amount of keys, but rarely do they both have a limited amount of keys and a split buying system.

The end result is that the buying up of the $1 games screwed over others. You can get all defensive if you want, I don't care. You are irrelevant to this. You did it, you don't like that anyone pointed out that you did it. Big deal... I was just pointing out a fact. You brought yourself into it.

Also, please don't take the time to explain. I don't need to know how to do things the wrong way. You would just be wasting your time and mine.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Half Life, Penumbra Collectors Pack, FlatOut Complete, Dynamite Jack, Crusader Kings and others are 75% off right now. Most of them are dirt cheap. Lets complain about people giving these games away as well. Two days now there have been endless threads about Shadow Ops. Just get over it and move on. Every single person benefited from the Shadows Ops giveaways.

  • People won free games.
  • Contributor values increased
  • Every single member of the site got a steady stream of points
  • People won free games

No point in complaining about it every five minutes. Odds are the games will be marked down in value on the Steam Store and the contributor values will decrease. Its really not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. So we got an awesome deal on a game and used it to our advantage? What is your point.

You're going to honestly tell me that if Skyrim went on sale tomorrow on a flash deal for, say, $5 that you wouldn't buy 10 copies and create a bunch of giveaways? People obviously wanted to win Shadow Ops or they wouldn't have entered the giveaways, so don't try and argue "It's a 34 Metacritic game nobody wants it." If nobody wanted it then people would have voted with their points and not entered. Find me one public Shadow Ops giveaway without any entries. I'll wait.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. People will often act on self interest. Just like people who gave away bundle games back in the day just for contribution value. Contribution value will never accurately reflect actual contribution, there will always be those who game the system. Things will go on. Some will have $50 contribution value because they have away Skyrim at release, others because they paid $3 on poorly rated super discounted indie titles in pay what you want bundles. It will never be truly fair. Oh well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You're right it never will be. We just need to accept that. The bundle value system helps alleviate that. If for some strange reason Shadow Ops was marked as a bundle release (when it was more of a flash/weekend sale) I wouldn't care. I've given a decent amount of games in the month or two I have been here. A lot were bundles. Some were not. For example when Borderlands was priced ridiculously low I bought a 4-pack. Kept one, made 2 public giveaways and one private for a hometown friend. The private giveaway didn't even add to my contributor value since it was only one entry, and I am fine with that.

The thing is not all of us are made of money and cant afford to giveaway AAA titles everyday. So if I can buy 2 bundles for 5 a piece and give away 80% of the games in said bundle, then that makes me feel good. Some people don't have any disposable income to even buy something as cheap as a pay-what-you-want bundle. If I can spend $10 and make 10 peoples day with a win in a giveaway and a chance at a free game, I'll be damned if I let anyone try to make me feel like less of a "contributor."

Average high-contrib public giveaways will be raised $300-400 from here on to block out the egregious abusers. Now, tell me this is a good thing and we should keep raising limits until we reach a point where newcomers are regularly daunted by four-figure sums.

The shadow harvest thing doesn't seem so bad. It's the ones were I suspect people bought the indie royale bundle for serious sam 3 when it was super cheap, and then possibly bought or are going to buy a giftable copy of the deluxe upgrade for $1.99 on steam right now in an attempt to bypass the being marked as a bundle game that I think are a bit dodgy.
