Try searching for those, and see for yourself what comes out.
All I'm saying, this isn't like those cry threads about not winning, or points or something, it's kinda harder to find info about this if you don't know what caused it/what it is, or whatever...

That's exactly uInt32.Max
I assume, that some bug with removed entries, maybe together with a so-called race condition, produced this error.
It somehow got to -1 entries, which rolled around to uInt32.Max. Then additional entries don't get it above the threshold, since a sanity check now interferes. Result is a stuck number.

maybe they should finally use 64bit integers to count entries ;)

or just allow negative numbers ;)

or do proper programming ;)

simple thing: first user enters ga and removes entry. due some timing problem the removal of the entry happens before the user actually enters the ga. the programmer was too sloppy to check the case and just removes the entry and so going from 0 to -1. since he used unsiged integers that is the same as 2^32-1. somehow the overflow does not happen in the other direction and therefore stops.

Who said it is about them being too sloppy? If this were their full time job and they were being paid for it then yeah, I'd say sloppy work. However, this is a free site, doesn't even accept donations as far as I'm aware - the programmer you're talking about most likely has a ton of other stuff to do that are more important than the site.

well, being a softwawre developer myself i can say: either use signed integers or make sure it never gets negative.

everyone makes mistakes, so do i (practically the same error also happened to me some time ago). one just has to fix it. and it happens because we make false assumtions and are too lazy to do the check anyway.

i never said the one who wrote the code was a bad progammer. i just said he made a mistake.

I fully understand where you're coming from, I'm doing Computer Science myself - I just found your post came off a bit too negative (especially on the second line of the paragraph you wrote).

Maybe when SGv2 comes out it'll be fixed, who knows. I wouldn't say it's the most serious issue though, but again, I get what you mean.

well, perhaps you're right and it came off more negative than intended.

and since every one of us did this kind of mistake multiple times we all know we should not make assumtions and do additional tests - but its not fun and takes time, so we often choose not to do it - so we are a bit sloppy where its not critical code.

being paid... isn't that what the advertisements are for ?

Do you know how much the advertisements are paying? They may or may not cover the website itself, it's not like it's something guaranteed. I obviously can't tell you the details cause I don't know them but ads aren't always making people a lot of money.
