Eh. They're just testing out new ways of getting more money out of each title they've got. It is disgusting, but there are people who'll pay for it, so its a win situation for them.
DLC, Season passes, microtransactions. They can go fuck themselves with this shit.

What sense does that make when every single drm gets cracked even before the games officially release?
Hell, the only thing DRM does is hurt sales. I know quite a bit of people that want Anno 2070 but are not going to buy it unless it is 5$ because of the 3-times activation limit bullshit.

They tried to sell it as anti-pirate-measure, but realised later that they are just making fools of themselfes. Nowadays its openly discussed as anti second hand stuff. The publishers have undergone the change from comments like "we dont want to hurt the second hand maket, but pirates are forcing us into this" to "everybody who buys a used game steals from us".

Yes. That's why Sony, and I believe Microsoft as well, have been looking into ways to prevent people from playing used console games. (There was news of Sony patenting some method not to long ago.)
If it was really about piracy, if piracy was both such a massive loss and DRM worked, then publishers should be willing to release the data that they claim proves their point. But publishers won't do it, because they believe releasing that data will hurt them. Instead, they just release vague or sensational claims that cannot be proven or disproven because they won't release any supporting or negating evidence. (Or they are named Ubisoft, in which case they have multiple DRM-related fiascos while publicly making statements that immediately blow up in their faces for being unbelievable, out of touch, or even outright false.)

Sony directly reversed their stance on second hand, clearly stating that they will do nothing to personally stop the second hand market (I think they realized it would hurt console sales). Microsoft, on the other hand, has been quiet as far as I know.

I don't know why so many gamers have this feeling of entitlement that they deserve to play games even if they don't want to buy them for whatever self justifiable reason they can think of. If you don't like the price, don't use the product. If you found out your favorite food was made out of baby -insert animal you like here-, would you boycott the company or would you start stealing it in the hopes that it would somehow convince them to switch to a better ingredient?

Awesome reasoning. As a content creator I'd much rather people pirate my stuff and buy it later at a discount or on impulse. People that would pirate stuff would probably just forget about the piece of content that they never tried in case getting stuff for free wasn't an option. Market is oversaturated, so you gotta motivate people to pay, not blame them for stealing product that you made them want.
Comment has been collapsed.
If I knew that I could get away with it the same way I can get away with piracy I'd steal it. No doubt about that. Not in the hopes of getting them to switch ingredients though.

Only fact I cant understand: Why doesn´t anyone just punch that blonde woman in the face? Honestly, this is fucked up.. but not as fucked up as the fact that it will work and get exploited further in the future.
Well, we always have the awesome indiescene, so gaming will survive!

The "ignore" function is an excellent addition to Steamgifts, and allows you to hide the post of obvious trolls, and bellend posters who don't add anything of value to the site.
Resorting to accusing other posters of being kids, while insulting everyone with a different opinion is the sign of someone who is either trolling (badly), or hasn't fully graduated into the adult world.
If our mutual friend really is one of those of us who cut their gaming teeth on foldy monochrome Nintendo handhelds, he is in grievous need of some "life skills" training and significantly more diligent attention from his carer...

Every company wants to make the maximum amount of profit they can, that is obvious, but that needs to be within reason. You can push the bar as much as you want but eventually it will snap.
Lets say that all of the major courier services like FedEX and UPS increased their delivery charges by 400% would you just simply shrug it off and say " Well they have to make profit don't they, I will proceed to get screwed in the ass".No you wouldn't.
What happened with Sony and the ps3? it released at a 599.99 price point which even though was a fair price for the tech at the time, consumers didn't agree with and guess what they voted with their wallets which eventually forced Sony to compromise and make changes, see how that works?
Yes these micro transactions are optional and can be ignored but EA have already stated many times how much they are in favor of the f2p model and would like to completely center all of the titles(even singe player games like dead space) around micro transactions in the future.
If you knew as much about business as you think you do you would know that competitive pricing and customer satisfaction is also important.
The fact that you would even blow this out of proportion and judge peoples lives based on a JOKE, and the fact that you are complaining about people complaining is ludicrous.

These microtransactions are the thin end of the wedge. If we tolerate this, then our children will undoubtedly be next...
Also, it never ceases to amaze me how some people not only rush to lube up, bend over and touch their toes when confronted by this sort of exploitative and insulting crap, but then go on to castigate others for not doing the same.
These misguided souls are a besuited marketing man's most sordid wet dream, and some of the most insidious evangelists for consumer exploitation this side of the EA meeting room door.

What happens is you either grind it out because you enjoy playing the game, you pay real money to avoid having to grind it out because you don't actually enjoy it that much (which kinda seems like a silly idea), or you avoid the game altogether.
The way I see it is, if it's something you could get just by playing the game, but they're giving people the option to pay for the items instead if they so choose, then all is well. If it's something that's exclusive to people who choose to pay extra, then it's sort of a dick move. But even in that scenario, that only really becomes a big issue when it's a multiplayer game and players who pay extra get a real advantage over people who don't.
Comment has been collapsed.
But why should the consumer endure grind just to allow EA of all people to make a quick buck? Dead Space is a game about pacing, if you stop to smell the roses (or start farming an area for stuff for 15-20 min because you can't beat a boss) it kills the pacing. I still call this a money grubbing move to no ones benefit than EAs.
This is the equivalent for paying for cheat codes. No one needed or wanted it in the past games and if you can't deal with it play on a lower difficulty.

No one needed or wanted it in the past games and if you can't deal with it play on a lower difficulty.
That is exactly right. People who don't want to grind will either lower their difficulty setting or choose to pay to bypass an area they don't want to deal with. The point is, if it's purely optional and there's a way to get around spending extra, then it's not that severe of a problem in my opinion. Now if it was just "stupid hard" on purpose on even the easiest difficulty setting, then we'd start to have problems.

Guess we're just gonna have to do our "research" even more thoroughly to avoid buying games that purposefully do that. If it does come to that, of course. Ultimately it is still up to us to decide what kind of games we want to be playing, how much we're willing to pay for them, and how much bs we're willing to put up with.
Comment has been collapsed.
Grinding can get boring fast, even if it's a good game. It isn't fun when you have to do the same thing over and over again to get better stuff until you can do something other.
It could be also a fairer system but I don't expect it from EA.

while thats great for an mmo, its utterly ridiculous, lazy, and just plain greedy for a single player game, from a single plsyer franchise, to start building the game just to require the grind or additional payment. yet another game from ea I wont purchase because of their brilliant idea to gouge consumers. whats sad is that its not even ea's fault, its the consumers that eat it up like candy. dlc quest was a prediction... soon to become real.

They are certainly adding new horror elements to this games but perhaps not in that sense I had hoped for.

I was gonna avoid the game just because it was going Origin only, "micro transactions" just puts a few extra nails in the lid. I dislike games that are pay to win, which micro transactions allow.
It also helps kill off me wanting to play the original 2. Its like what happened with the Mass Effect series. I bought ME1 when it was cheap and I thought the series would still be on steam. I was just about to buy 2 when I seen that 3 was going origin only. I dislike Origin, so am not bothering with buying any series no matter how much I like it if part of it is Origin only.

"these transactions are generally put into games to avoid tedium"
Then design your games better to avoid that, don't opt for the easy, greedy solution. Even if it doesn't give you the endgame stuff, its still saying that if its to hard, just buy your way out of the situation, no skill required.
Freakin EA and their retarded money schemes.

The stupidity of the whole situation is starting to leave the boarder of my comprehension. So... a single player game... with micro-transactions... how does that even make any damn sense?! What's the point of it all? How do they justify this? They aren't even bothering to hide the fact that they're grabbing for money anymore. Weren't video games part of the entertainment industry some time ago? Well, looks like they dropped the "entertainment" part. Have we, the consumers, really shown ourselves to be spoiled enough for a scheme like this to work? Basically to sum this up- this is like bribing the publishers for them to unlock the cheats...
Ok, ok, rant aside, what really eludes me is this: If someone bought the game, that means they would wanna experience it, right? Well, for someone to buy these stuff(hence- to cheat), they'd just wanna stroll trough it without any challenge and get to the end as fast as possible. But why would these people buy the game in the first place? They aren't experiencing anything worthwhile while playing with the cheats... Do they just wanna see the story? Well, then there's YouTube for that and it's completely free. Maybe I'm just stupid and can't see the light in the whole thing... or maybe just consumers are stupid and have too much money on their hands(And Darwin was wrong!).
In any case, I'm surely not touching a legit copy of this game with a 10 meeter pole, but if it does turn up that they pumped up the difficulty stupid just to milk cash out of people... well, they're gonna get away with it, because the world sucks. -.-

EA are aiming below the belt on this one. And you're absolutely right, micro transactions in single player games doesn't make any sense at all. They're clearly trying to squeeze money out of their own consumers and that pisses me off.
Like you, I'm not going anywhere near this game.
(oh, and fuck Origin)

It's up to us (the consumers) to stop that micro-shit phenomenon.

Which will sadly never happen. 80% of people complaining about this will still buy the game (90% of all statistics are fake, but still, you get the point).

Yep, confirmed.
Dead Space 3 will now feature micro-transactions.
Source Source
Personally I think this is utter BS. It is a 60$ game, there should be no option of spending additional money on it. (Good/worthwhile) DLCs are an exception.
The RPS article brings up an interesting (or disgusting) point, these transactions are generally put into games to avoid tedium. One reason why F2P models work well, the good ones anyway. What happens if the game is gimped on purpose to include tedious sections? I would not put that past EA.
