The overall data transfer speed is dictated by the CPU: more threats, higher frequency equals higher download/ upload speed as well as SWAP memory (for who knows my alien language)... I get 4.7 mBps peak and average 3.8mBps on a dual core @3gHz or 8.5mBps peak and 7.5mBps average on Core i5. Hope this is usefull ^_^

Well not realy...even on IPv6 ,WLAN off and master device the modem (D-Link DCM-somehow) reads the computer specs and calculates the logical maximum speed wich it can download with and it won't let me overdrive the specs :/

Actually the bottleneck is your harddisks I/O most probably.Since steam moves a lot of data you must have a fast enough hard disk.
CPU speed/type is irrelevant to internet speed since an old pentium is already fast enough to handle the bandwidth going through on your typical adsl line.

wich is: (aprox values) 70mbps write on disk // 50 mbps read from disk // 40~55 mbps read-write (moving) depending on files sections // 50 mbps install from disk to disk

I'm at university, where there is wicked fast internet, and im getting a peak of 7.2mb/s. however at home it rarely goes above 300 KB/s

Peak is 15Mbps (Virgin broadband UK). Sounds decent, but the connection drops more than other ISPs I have used in UK, and also we still suffer from poor upload speeds in despite having good download speeds.

6.8 MB/s or over 50 mb/s.
I've found Steam will absorb most or all of the free bandwidth. In the past I've had trouble with it stealing bandwidth from say a Netflix HD stream at the same time but I've not had that issue in a year or more. Most other internet usage takes very little bandwidth, so Steam can download at a full or near max speed while streaming music (very low bandwidth) or others use the internet.

While me connections max DL is 2.4mb/s Steam some times shows 5-6 mb/s as peak so im guessing its kinda broken.
Anyway my average DL and most logical for my connection's limit is 1-1.2 mb/s.

About 4-5MB/s (32-40Mb/s). My connection: 60Mb/s (up to 7,5MB/s, but I don't saw at steam download more than 7,2MB/s). Yeah steam rare use more than 5,6MB/s, when I download somthing from other source I got always 7,4MB/s. Mayby it depend how many ppl download smth from steamm servers.

Steam would tell me that I hit 3 or 4 MB/s when I know full well I only have a 8Mb/s connection. A more believable hit would be around 1,024KB/s

Just installing something and wondering.
My peak was 5.6mb/s, average seemed to be around 5mb/s. And that was when I was streaming music and other people using the internet...
So, what's yours?
