Release Date: 11-03-2011 (03-11-2011)

Graphics:

We are talking about Sonic here and not just Modern Sonic either, we have Classic Sonic as well. Each Sonic has an act, modern Sonic has the whole 3D act where you move outside of the straight line while Classic Sonic has 2D on 3D background. They are really beautiful graphics, crisp and clear.

Gameplay:

Gameplay is fine, you have separate stages and within those stages are two acts. These two acts correspond with the sonic of your choosing. Classic Sonic is Act 1 and Modern Sonic is Act 2. Along with the Acts, you can buy skills that will work in the acts. Classic Sonic is straight forward, run the line and don’t fall, modern Sonic however is more of today’s Sonic where you can venture off a bit and look for secrets. After you beat the acts, you can do little side missions to get keys to unlock the boss area of each 3 stage areas.

Controls:

The controls for this game are very confusing if you do not have a gamepad or an XBOX 360 controller, I suggest if you are going to use the keyboard to play to configure the controls first before you play. Make sure you know the keys you are going to be using because you will be using most of them, especially with Modern Sonic.

Story: It starts off with little Classic Sonic running around when suddenly a mysterious bad guy happen to appear and sucks him into its dark hole.We then cut to Modern Sonic, it is his birthday (he can’t drink yet, he’s only 20!) Everybody is wishing him a happy birthday and he gets to eat his famous Chilidog before the same mysterious bad guy appears sucking in everyone including Sonic. Sonic awakes to find a mysterious white world with colorless, dead areas. The only way Sonic can free himself, his friends, and the bring the colorless, dead worlds back is by going through each stage with Classic Sonic in his own act to bring them all back. - Oh and of course to defeat Dr. Eggman (can’t forget him!).

Multiplayer:

Multiplayer is versus mode in which you compete with other players which are defined as two different modes. Ranking Attack is to get the best time on each level and 30 Second Trial which is to see how far a player can get on the level in 30 seconds.

  • Achievements: Of course there are achievements; Steam Achievements are available as long as you complete the requirements for them.

Final Verdict:

Overall I give Sonic Generations an 8/10, it hit the right cord with me because I just love Sonic and I am glad to see they finally learned their lesson to not release crap. They added Classic Sonic and classic stages, I was so happy to see this. The downside for me was the controls, it is either you have to set them up for the keyboard so they aren’t all over the place or use an XBOX 360 controller. For me, it is a must buy for any Sonic fan who loves a good old fashion game with a modern touch.
