What does that do? Everyone says thanks on every giveaway. I read somewhere they said it increases your chances of winning which I doubt. There's also a firefox plugin that automatically says thanks to every giveaway you enter.

For most people it's just habit than real gratitude honestly.

And there will always be two groups: those who think people are being sincere when they say 'thanks' and those who think they're just trying to keep their post count up.

I agree, which is why I always say thank you and usually try and write a little something extra to indicate why I'm interested, that I'm human, and that I'm glad they took the time to put up a giveaway.

I try to do the same thing. If I can't think of anything to say about the game I'm entering for, even if it is just to express a mild interest, I probably don't want the game enough to justify entering at all.

This. I always try to add sth just to not leave plain 'Thanks'.

I mean those people that don't even mean it. Even when there's a giveaway and the person says "Don't say thanks" some people still post thanks. Just that one word. Not a meaningful thank you sentence. Just the work thanks.

I post thanks if I'm in a rush. I'll usually write "Oh this is on my wishlist!" Or "Great game! thanks" something like that. But I still do drop TY and thanks if I'm just whipping my points out before I run to work or school.

If you win things and then give away things why are you here? This site is meant to give games to people who can't get games. If you can afford to buy games you shouldn't be entering giveaways.

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know about you but many of the games I have I got when on sale. Being able to afford some games doesn't mean being to afford everything you want now does it?? That goes for everything of course, not just games. That being said, I think the 'spirit' of this place was meant to be about giving. I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy receiving too.... I mean who among us didn't enjoy opening their presents on Christmas morning? But if all someone does is take take take and not give back, then guess what, they will just have to live with being considered a leecher by some people.

Or maybe you're just really poor and that's why you're here in the first place?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hey, if someone is poor and they want to come here and enter giveaways that's totally fine. Just don't come in here and chime in with your opinion as though it should carry a lot of weight when you don't even give back or contribute, especially when it's a stupid comment that other people saying "thanks" and showing their gratitude is spam and you hate it. That's really why this discussion started in the first place.

You're the one trying to discredit an opinion based on their certifications rather than actually trying to counter their opinion. I don't say Thanks on most of the giveaways I enter, not because I'm ungrateful, but because
A) It's really just spam, and if it isn't then it will probably just be taken as spam. With all the "Thanks" spammers, the legitimacy of a thank you will always be called into question.
B) I can say thanks to the giveaway creator if I win. I'm not going to say thanks on 2000 giveaways that I don't win.
C) If the giveaway creator wanted a Thanks spam, they can put that in the description. Anytime a giveaway has something in the description asking for a comment (i.e. asking to tell them what country you're from) I do that. If the giveaway's description told me to say thanks, I would. But if it doesn't, I give no comment.

If someone doesn't establish their credibility then what does it matter what their opinion is? That would be like a judge valuing the opinion of a known pathological liar in a court of law, or a political figure making a speech trying to gain support when they involve themself in scandals. If it's not fact, but rather opinion that is being presented, then credibility means everything. There's no need to even address the substance of someone's opinion when they have no credibility. I'm done with this discussion.

Comment has been collapsed.

You're trying to talk about "establishing credibility" while giving examples of negative credibility. If I'm an MMO player, and I never play sports games, I'm not allowed to have an opinion on EA's latest Sports games. But I DO get a voice when it comes to matters of gaming in general. They're a part of this site, and a member of the community, and if you can't actually counter their opinion without just saying "You're not allowed to speak here," then your opinion is just as invalid as theirs.

It's a lie that "thx" spamming increases you chances to win, only a premium account increases your chances.

I don't think it is gratuity when you use a script to save you from writing five letters, when you want to thank the giveaway creator you should write at least "Thank you!" instead of a simple "ty". Many people just say that it is spam because many people don't really care about the giveaway or its creator, just look at all those people who write such comments on obvious fake giveaways.

I write thank you comments on giveaways of games that I really want and on private giveaways.

The FAQ encourages saying thanks, but also says that it is not nescesarry. I can imagine a lot of people also say thanks, to show gratitude to the people who give away games? :)

Permalink

And then we see countless posts of people furious at people 'only' saying thanks, saying how meaningless and pointless it is, and then others say they'll require a re-roll if someone doesn't say thanks, because they think it's ungrateful to not.

You can't appease everyone, but I think it's a good habit to say 'thank you' and maybe even indicate why you're interested in/entering said giveaway. I know I appreciate it on mine!

You can be sure its not increase your winning chances :)

Because every one have chance of 1/X entries to win ;)

And some people are just doing it for the Entered/Comment ratio , which is fine too :)

^_^ , and a quote for you from the FAQ

How can I increase my odds of winning or acquire more points faster?

There are no ways to increase your odds of winning, you have the same chances of winning as everyone else. Points, as explained in the "points" portion of the FAQ, only increase when a public giveaway is submitted. Group and private giveaways currently do not distribute points.

So ha! to you back :3

I never enter a giveaway without saying thanks.
It is not automatic gesture, I do believe people don't own me absolutely anything at SG and if they are up to spending their cash so I can have a chance to win something I just like to show my gratitude.
And if there is some firefox plugin... whatever, I am not using it, I am not a damn robot.

Well, I started doing it when I saw someone else being judged by the fact their post count wasn't near their giveaways entered count. This was right after I signed up and I didn't want to offend anyone so I started doing it. Always seemed silly to me, the winner should of course give a lot of thanks, but everyone thanking for the chance is just unread spam.

I tend to thank the giveaways I enter, because it is one of the ways I can show gratitude. Even if it takes 5 seconds to write a comment, it still shows more gratitude than just clicking "Enter to Win". Givers need to be thanked, sincerely, rather than a habit, or to keep the post count up, as someone suggested.
