Since the limit was introduced , the number of members has grown hugely , that means the number of giveaways also grown . In less than 24 hour you can fill your 300 points today , and if there is a sale , bundle or exploit those points fill up in a couple of hours ? So how about a rising in the point limit ? to 350 or 400 or what ever do you think it would be the best.

No, this suggestion has been made a lot of times before and the limit is still kept at 300.

What, exactly, would be the point? (Harhar.) If you're sitting at 300 points all the time an increase in the cap would be of no benefit whatsoever because you're already able to enter for everything you want. And if you're entering everything in sight and constantly sitting at zero points you're not hitting the cap anyway. Hohum.

How about lowering the limit to 100, then people will stop entering every fucking givaway.... (Sorry, bitter about this)

When have you seen a giveaway costing that much? Most I've seen was a 70 on the Crisis Collection. Points always match the price, so do show us a $150 giveaway.

I have seen 150 point giveaways I believe.

If that is true, then the cap obviously could not go lower than the most expensive game. I'm genuinely curious at the moment. Perhaps if the list of titles that could be given away had the numbers beside them we might have both extremes and averages to work with. Unless someone got bored and did that by hand...

Its true. I think Saints Row 3 plus all DLC was at that once and many publisher packs.

Think of all the publisher packs, they usually cost even more than $300, but the point limit for giveaways is 150.

Thanks to both of you for the info. Given that, 200 would be better than 100, though 200-300 still seems fine.

If you think the current system is a bad idea, then explain the reasons.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why the current system is bad? We get too many points and many people enter any giveaway they see just to win something without wanting the game. With less points people would be more selective on what giveaways they enter.

And what the hell do you do when there are no giveaways for a game you want ?

Nothing, nobody forces people to spend their points.

Well , it would be a shame to waste the points that would have generated over time .

It's more a shame to steal a game from other people who wanted to win and play the game.

99% of the time I'm sitting at 300 points with no game I'm interested to enter. I'd have to be a real jerk to enter in a giveaway for a game I don't want and possibly depriving someone else of it.

No because they cost you nothing, just apply for games you are interested in and stop being greedy for free stuff and getting in the way of us that actually want the games for more than just filling slots in our steam library wall.

+1 was going to say the same i cant spend 300 points in 1 day i think everybody who wants more is just someone who want games and arent going to play it. Just want to every giveaway NO

Rather than rising/lowering the points, how about decreasing the rate you earn the points?

With so many points in such a short time people enter far to many giveaways they are not really interested in - nice side effect would be:

  • higher chances of winning a game you want
  • more meaningful "thank you" messages are likely
  • and even less fake give aways to "save" the points I can imagine.
  • less load on the servers - which in turn probably means less earnings by displaying ads but with extensions like SG+ this is probably neglectable

I don't think it's possible to generally lower the point generation more. Now you get 5% of the game value in points, i.e. 1p per $20 and lower values are rounded up ($10 is also 1p). There isn't much room to lower the percentage. A way that could work would be to remove the point generations from bundle games and such, but there would have to be found a good balance that we won't get to less points.

300 seems on-target, especially given the things that you mention. Unless you're trying to get like 80 entries for the same game coming out of a bundle, they seem to regenerate at a decent enough rate.

I agree with many, that it should stay the same (if not lowered). To prevent people from entering anything other than what they really want.
I hope you don't get too many rage responses. People have a tendency to have extreme emotions when it comes to any suggested changes to the sites design. Just keep a cool head.

Raising the point cap is not a good idea. Non-active users and leechers could just log-in once per week, enter almost all giveaways, then log-out. So hell no, 300 is fine.
