Hello there,

Do you know how to see and manage all drivers which installed on Windows? I'm trying to clean that USB Card Reader dongle's drivers; probably that will be the solution (BTW USB PORTS ARE ALIVE!! yay Can't use them in Windows though, especially 3.0 ones)

So far, what did i do?

1- Deleting unknown USB devices from Device manager, used "Scan for hardware changes" option
2- Downloaded USB drivers from Toshiba website for my laptop, reinstalled it. Nothing changed.
3- Used Windows System Recovery three times. Tried to revert it to Aug 14, first attempt failed; second attemt failed first, but it said "it was successful" later when i rebooted PC. Tried to do that third for an older one as well (same day), it was totally successful but USB ports are still unusable.
4- I thought that card reader dongle might fried USB ports, also a SG user said that. But i could use my USB keyboard and see the red light under my mouse while i'm on UEFI (BIOS), so i'm sure ports are OK!

I'll try these:

1- Try to clear the automatically installed driver when i plugged in that dongle. But i don't know how to reach it and wipe them all.
2- I'll try Ubuntu LiveCD feature to test USB ports once more, just in case.
3- I'll try "Repair Windows 8" option under the charm bar. I don't trust Windows 8 at all but...
4- I'll use Toshiba Recovery Discs (last option)

Partially solved the problem, guys. I'm searching for AMD 3.0 xHCI Drivers, since currently i can't use my 3.0 ports because Windows don't be able to install two other xHCI drivers in the list of Device Manager. It says "Windows found the driver files but for some reason it couldn't install it".

How did i solved it (partially):

That was dumb actually. Right clicked on unknown devices and selected "Update drivers for this device" one by one and chose manual update. Selected Windows folder with sub-folders and hit next. Found most of USB drivers except 3.0 ones. So, i still can't use other two ports... yet.

Original Post:

I have a serious problem right now. About half hour ago, i used a card reader dongle on my Toshiba Satellite L850D. After that, i opened the SDCard inserted in this dongle and... boom. Windows (8.1 x64) crashed, i had to shut it down with power button.

And since then, i can't use any of my USB ports, in Device manager, there are a lot of unknown "Universal Serial Bus USB Controller" entries and 2 unknown devices. It can't find any new drivers, i can't find USB or Chipset drivers for this model (found one USB driver which was 46 MB of a zip file from Toshiba web site, but it was absurdly ATI Catalyst installer).

Now, i'll try to use system restore for two days ago.

But please, just in case, if you have opinions, please share them.

Much appreciated.

(sorry, no giveaways)

Update:
Windows Recovery didn't solve any problem.

It said it couldn't recover to August 14 but now it says it could -it seems so- but all USB port drivers are still have yellow exclamations and USB ports don't work apparently.

I should have use SDCard adapter instead of an unknown dongle sigh

Windows recognizes USB ports automatically.
So just click "Scan for hardware changes" button on "Device Manager" window.

I already did. I already tried to delete them one by one, i hit "scan for hardware changes" but nothing happened.

Alas, Windows Recovery didn't solve any problem.

It has warranty.

But on the bright side, ports are OK! I've used it on UEFI and i could use my USB keyboard and saw the light under my mouse.

That f'n dumb Windows 8.1 wasting my time again.

I have to delete that card reader dongle's driver (since automatically installed, i don't know how to reach those drivers)

Did you run that catalyst installer? It will install chipset drivers along with the usb ones.

It says repair/uninstall. There was only SDK and AMD Vision options. I'll try to uninstall them and reinstall them just in case, since Windows Recovery didn't solve any problem.

I should have use SDCard adapter

You can try to remove values "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}, sometimes it does the trick. Backup just in case.

I couldn't see LowerFilters and UpperFilters in there:

How a dongle could do that, i can't understand. Kind of a virus. Maybe i have to find it's drivers on Windows (i just plugged it in btw)

Those values shouldnt be there, so that's ok. Maybe you just burned your ports?

I'm thinking about it. Even Windows Recovery didn't help it. Here, please take a look for the shot i took from Device Manager (this one is after Windows Recovery):

Can a Chinese-made SDCard Reader able to do such thing? Or is that a coincidence?

Also, "Diğer Aygıtlar" means "Other Devices" and under the "Evrensel Seri Veri Yolu Denetleyicileri (Universal Serial Bus controllers)", there are two entries named "AMD USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0096 (Microsoft)"

I'm surprised a chinese made one was even sturdy enough to use

The best solution I've had with USB driver problems is uninstalling the USB drivers and rebooting the machine. Windows will automatically detect the ports as new devices and install the proper USB drivers. It felt a bit counter-intuitive but it worked.

Reasonable method. I'll try to find USB drivers on Add/Remove Programs section in Control Panel, since i already tried it on Device Manager and didn't work.

By the way, Windows Recovery didn't solve anything as well.

Oh, great, there isn't anything for chipset or usb ports.

If all else fails, I guess you could try a fresh Windows install. That solved my problem, which was pretty similar to yours, some time ago.

Good idea. I'll use a bootable Ubuntu disc right now. Because i don't trust Windows 8 as well.

I had the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite, I ended up doing a clean, fresh install, and it still didn't work :/

I've just used my USB keyboard on UEFI (BIOS) and i think this one is just driver-related.

But how to clear those drivers which installed with that usb card reader dongle, i'm seeking that solution.

Btw good luck to you as well.

If you want to replace single driver error for OS that consists of nothing BUT driver errors and incompatibilities beyond very basic functions of your hardware, sure, do so.

Have you tried to undongle and dongle again?

Yes. Tried that.

I think i have to clear those drivers from Windows, since i could use my keyboard and see the light of my mouse while i'm using UEFI.

Thank you for your advice. I've already used Reinstall Windows feature on Windows 8. I'll archive that software you mentioned just in case ^^

Do a full reinstall.
If something that should work out of the box doesn't, i reinstall.
