That's not nice.
can you work at a nuclear plant without blowing it up more than twice a week?

I'll give u that i went from vanilla to EU than longwar.
But, i still think (really i do) that all of it should go first.
the big down side to the long war is its length for a first run.
and i am allowed for my opinion right?

I grabbed the game last winter holiday sale, but didn't really give it too fair a chance. At that time, I wasn't used to games that made you treat your characters as expendable. Oddly enough Shadowrun Returns made the gameplay more tolerable to me, although I did't really start playing again until the whole GMG/Playfire promotion. I'm presently six hours in and enjoying it vanilla. I might grab EW later on with my coupon.

I think you should start with enemy within because it just expands a lot of the gameplay features. This expansion is so well integrated that you'll probably not notice what is EW and what is the base game. As you are new to tactical games i suggest you do the tutorial and play the game in an easy dificulty. After you mastered the game you should try the long war mod. It's harder but much more satisfying to play.

EW expands the story of EU with a second agency fighting you and an attack of the aliens on the xcom base.
It adds more maps for encounters, adds a new ressource that can be used for mech troopers or gene mods for your soldiers, adds a little dlc about a french psi soldier, adds a special council mission and changes some game mechanics (for example second inventory slot can now be researched in the foundry, support skill is altered to carry more in one slot instead)
Imo EW > EU in every way, but sometimes (depends on the RNG) the early game can be quite harder than EU early game.

I highly recommend straight-up playing Enemy Within. It's all Unknown has to offer, and many, many great stuff added. I bought EU over a year ago, and waited until I get EW. I don't regret.

"As I understand, EW doesn't add new missions"
Actually, it does. There's a few scripted ones that are integrated within the main storyline, and the Exalt have their own mission types. I'd go with Enemy Within, even though I do think some of the new stuff could be handled better. (Mec troopers are really kind of overpowered, and the medal upgrades work kind of weird.)

I'm new to XCOM (and tactical games in general to be honest). As I understand, EW doesn't add new missions, it just expands upon existing gameplay. Should I play vanilla game first, or just start with Enemy Within right away?
And just to be clear: there's no giveaway in this post whatsoever, don't even bother checking source code or something.
upd: the giveaways (which this post never had) have finished now.
