I'll be glad if you can actually, well, solve the puzzle and earn your place. Sepia tears isn't too long, perhaps an hour and a bit. You have a whole week until this ends. It'll make a nice change of pace from your ordinary gaming.
This giveaway is intended for those who actually read my previous spotlight. I'd consider it unethical for people to enter if they didn't,but it was my mistake for not properly checking my links,so I will deliver even if the winner is one of those three.
Edit: You have my thanks for leaving the giveaway. I still wish that you'd read it.

Won't you at least try this one? It's the shortest yet,and 3 routes mean that if you finish one and don't like it you can quit, effectively reducing time to a third of what it should've taken you if you played it all. I'd estimate one route at about 20 minutes. Can you really not find those extra minutes to play it?

finally something with post preschool graphics, still I don't understand the point to this "spotlight". the games so far have been appaling, not to mention their pathetic length. I find romance novels like these disgusting in general, they're just smut with dressed people conceived by immature, talentless people riddled with sick, perverse fantasies usually stemming from self-loathing, stereotypes, cowardice, sexual frustration, obesity and geographical anomalies. also why write all that stuff instead of posting a vndb link? it'd be much clearer and informative.

1.Whatever you like those graphics is subjective to you,in the same way I can say I hate 8-bit graphics while someone else finds them appealing. I'll have visual novels of various art styles in the future, and you're free to express your opinion about it,but next time a simple "I didn't like the art style" would look better and less offensive.
2.The purpose of this spotlight is to let people have a taste of visual novels without committing to full,50-hour-long novels and without taking a cent out of their pocket. It's understandable that since they are released for free by people with a little or no experience their level is not as good as others, but they have their own strengths.
3.I'm sad to hear that you found my previous suggested novels to be awful. If you wish to provide actual points that you found horrible I'll be happy to discuss them, but I can't really reply to you just calling them all that. That's not constructive criticism, that's just hate. Example: tell a girl that she's an ugly bitch and that she should go fuck herself because her face looks like shit,or tell her that she'd look pretty if only she combed her hair at the morning. What do you think she is more likely to actually take to heart?
4.With small visual novels like that, vndb isn't good. Here is a link to 40 minutes to eternity's page. It doesn't tell you anything accurate about actual length, about the level of interactivity, about whatever you should even bother if you have a mac, etc. I find my format to be efficient at doing just that; If you have any specific point you'd like to see changed in future spotlights,I'll be glad to hear it.

vndb has all the info: length, kinetic novel tag and operating system icons in the releases section. it also has ratings, screenshots and an actual description. there's even an option to search for very short novels in english available for mac etc which in a matter of seconds gave me very interesting and satisfactory results. constructive criticism is for creators, I'm not going to fight for my opinion's validity, that's not how opinions work. I just don't think that something that you yourself admit to be of dubious quality is good introductory material.

1.No. vndb lists both the original and the updated versions of 40 minute to eternity's as <2 hours, while the updated is more than 10 times longer. Also, measuring by word count is more accurate than measuring by time as everyone has a different reading speed.
2.Rating? The updated 40 minutes to eternity's vndb page has TWO VOTES. You call that an accurate user rating?
3.Two problems with asking people to actually search for themselves for visual novels: First, they won't do it. People are lazy, they ain't visual novel fanatics. They'd rather keep playing their old games or looking for other games in sites they know better. vndb is not popular here. Second, there is an inevitable huge amount of crap that may seem ok from the vndb page, that I have trouble filtering even though I have experience in spotting them. Someone who doesn't will just click the first thing he sees that looks decent and if it is bad he is likely to stay away from visual novels for a good amount of time afterwards.
4.I don't give an actual description or a screenshot by purpose. I want people to fully experience those vns as they are, while screenshots and descriptions are often misleading and create flase expectations.
5.I provide direct links to the download rather then making people go through several websites just to reach them.
6.This is not introductory material. This is both for people who didn't read a single visual novel before and for people who have read hundreds.
7.My reviews wouldn't be honest if I just said that everything is great, now would they? Even the best games have things that could be done better. I simply write what I think are the vn's strong and weak points, and the fact I decided to feature it despite having those weak points means that I think that it is of adequate quality.
8.In a sense,I am a creator, since I create those threads. This is not feedback meant for the authors of the visual novels; This is feedback meant for me,so that I can see what people who visit those threads find good and what not. This will allow me to make suggestions that better fit the sg community's taste at the future. If you wish to provide feedback to the actual author,I include a source link in every spotlight, through which you can contact the author.
9.Your opinion is valid. You think those previous spotlights suck. My problem with it is that you don't write why they suck. I consider neither of the previous two vns I featured to be ordinary romance stories. From the last comment about 40 minutes to eternity: "Now itβs clear from the beginning that this is not another modern high school romance."

Here's my opinion on it:
Nanolife is different from what I've suggested so far. While others usually try to immerse you with the characters and their personality, this one tries to do with the setting. The characters are not developed but not too shallow; I found the art to be fitting(and cute) while the sound compliments it nicely. I think that the two first endings could've been more detailed, but they create a incentive to do the third route in order to understand what happened. Being honest,I didn't really get impressed by the third ending. I hoped for something that would be more, well, realistic? It kind of felt like the author just said "It was magic all along!". It's not bad though, and it makes sense using the settings the novel created.
I have high hopes that more people will like this one.

Okay, finished. Hmm, for some reason it felt even shorter than the 40 Minutes to Eternity one, even tho it's apparently almost double the size (in words).
Anyways, this one was fun. Quite the difference compared to the previous two. Less mystery, less sadness - well except the murdering of those poor pom poms ... q_q Some funny moments here and there. The setting was nice as well. The only thing even remotely close to this that I have read/watched/played would be SAO, so yah, this setting is still kinda new to me. The character details were quite impressive also - the names one the other hand, not so much. :p
My only real complaint with this one is length. It was far too short - especially for having 3 different routes. And this comes from someone who doesn't even like reading too much.
Looking forward to the next one! :)

Well,I felt like as much as I love all that mystery-tragedy,some people would really enjoy other types. You'll see that 40 minutes had no interaction, sepia had some interaction that doesn't change the ending, and nanolife had some that didn't and a few that did. If I manage to get it right by next week,I want to try a visual novel with both more interaction(point&click gameplay) and more sensitivity to choices.

As former avid MMORPG player I love stories about living in a virtual world and NPC's point of view. While Nanolife isn't great compared to some other works that use same premise, it deserves attention for well done sprites and UI - best among novels featured in this spotlight series so far.
It's also had the most choices, however all of them, except two obvious branching points, only change the following scene a little. Still a nice touch and helps to keep things fresh when replaying and looking for alternative routes.
Nanolife isn't too deep or interesting and "true" ending seems to be too idealistic. This and cute chibi characters makes me think it's aimed at younger readers. It still might be enjoyable read for MMORPG players of all ages.
Regarding graphics I liked small UI details - clickable icons that open descriptions of skills, classes and items; too bad it's not possible to actually use skill or item in battle like this. I also liked how text box color changes when characters speak in local or party chat and how name color is different for players, admins, NPCs and mobs.

Here's a list of released games with at least partial visual novel features I know of:
Fading hearts
Dysfunctional Systems: Learning to Manage Chaos
War of the Human Tanks
Go! Go! Nippon! My First Trip to Japan
Loren The Amazon Princess
Long Live The Queen
Cherry Tree High Comedy Club
Magical Diary
Analogue: A Hate Story
Hate Plus
For greenlight,TrickZZter has a list that you should probably check out.
Just make sure you know what you're doing before buying them if any of my threads encouraged you to check out visual novels. None of those is similar to anything I ever recommended, with the exception of analogue, hate plus,go go nippon, and dysfunctional systems; And I can't recommend any of those myself. I strongly suggest not buying any of those before you read your fair share of free visual novels and you are confident that you'll like what you buy.

finally finished sepia tears and solved the puzzle. i hope i'm not a slow reader. i already had the ga link from the beginning so i hope it made me slow. :P besides it was not fun like i expected. it made me remember some memories. characters are always talking about studying and how important it is. for the first time in my life i felt a need to high five some fictional characters. in the face, with a chair... did i mention that i just woke up from a nightmare related to sepia tears? WORST VN EVER BOOO. nah jk. the intro scene was interesting. another snow girl made me dance (or whatever it's called to wave your arm, head, body ridiculously). i like the characters (except you should study mark stuff). ending was unexpected. so anyway please accept this bump and my appreciation.

Don't worry about your reading,if it actually is slow you'll pick up the pace with time. I think the average stands at around 250 words per minute, but that's for words written on a paper; It's only expected for a visual novel to be read slower than that.
He really should study though.

I dont know about this one. First it felt like it took 3 Hours to play it to the end.
the Story itself was really weird, but i had fun with some scenes. Like the Noobinator.
That Game is better then Sepia. But the Best to yet was Forty Minutes to Eternity from the last three.

I really enjoyed Nanolife. Thanks for the suggestion! :D
The art was simple yet interesting. I think this being a gaming community made this one a good choice as at least SOME people could relate to the events that happened. (And me being a huge anime fan that watched .hack and SAO kinda helped also)
The game itself is really short, which is both a pro and a con. Pro because it makes it easy to finish, but con because I wanted it to go more in depth. I kinda wish there was more interaction and that we could actually... do stuff.. like actually do the battles.

Depends on if you've seen SAO already or not. People that have think its kinda slow (and also an SAO ripoff, even though it came out a decade before <.<).
I really enjoy it. I suck at reviewing, ha. I'd say just try out the first episode or 2 and see how you feel about it (I'm sure you can watch it online somewhere). The music is also great.
EDIT: I'm talking about .hack//SIGN, not the other series.
