I don't normally play eroges, but certain people kept telling me I should check out Sengoku Rance because it's a kind of turn-based strategy RPG and I fucking love turn-based strategy RPGs. I did some research and decided not to play it because a description told me it's basically about a guy raping his way across foedal Japan. This might sound like good fun to some, but didn't exactly strike me as the kind of game I wanted to play. Eventually though, my curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a shot.

Much to my surprise, it's a really solid game. Not even "good for a porn game", but just "a good game" period. For me it sits neatly on that line between too easy and too difficult, where you can just mess around with it and not do terribly bad at it, but at the same time you really need to plan ahead and know what you're doing if you want to get the best results. Even the (totally skippable) sex/rape scenes weren't all that offensive (most of the "rape" scenes are more of the "girl is reluctant at first but enjoys it anyway" variety) and the game actually has a pretty decent sense of humor about itself that keeps things from getting all weird and disturbing (it does get weird - funny weird, not disturbing weird).

Seriously, if they took the porn out of this game and sold it on Steam as an indie title, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

So yeah, most porn games suck because they figure good gameplay isn't needed because people play them for the porn. I guess that's not entirely untrue, but it is the main reason why I dislike porn games (and non-porn VNs as well). If I want to play a game, I want a good game (or at least an entertaining game), and if I want to watch porn I don't want to play a shitty game first. But Sengoku Rance isn't the kind of deal where you put up with the shitty game to get to the mediocre porn, it's the kind where you skip the mediocre porn to play more of the fun game.
