Recently, there has been a rash of "not received" giveaways, despite the fact that it is both easy and simple to avoid the bad marks on your SG profile. Since it can be a bit daunting to wade through the Official FAQ, here is a list of things to remember when making a giveaway.

1) If you make a giveaway, YOU will be the one providing the game(s) to the winner(s). If you cannot afford to pay for the game, do not make the giveaway.

2) The game you provide to the winner(s) must be redeemable on Steam. Uplay or Origin keys are not acceptable. Winner(s) of the giveaway are required to mark "Gift not received" if he/she/they do not received a key or gift redeemable on Steam. Some unscrupulous winners have been known to activate the Origin or Uplay key after having marked the game as "not received," so just avoid such keys altogether.

NOTE: Some key sellers (like Green Man Gaming) provide a region-restricted key as they detect your region and assume the key is going to be for personal use. Always check that the key you're buying is going to be region-free if you intend to give it away. You don't want your winner being unable to activate the key in his or her region.

3) Make sure your winner redeems your gift when you give it. If you are going to have a problem with someone, it will happen at this point. Once the game shows up in his or her library, you have evidence the game was given. (You did check to see that the winner didn't already own the game, right?) If he or she refuses to redeem the game, you now have screenshots of your chat session, the key transfer, et cetera that you can give to SG Support to protect yourself (and nail the jerk). Remember: it is a requirement for winners to redeem their gifts. They cannot do anything else with them.

Those three things should go a long way toward keeping your profile clear of nasty red marks. You will still want to read through the FAQ (linked above), however. It will help you avoid looking dumb in front of your peers.

I trust my fellow SG users will remind me if I have forgotten anything important in this posting. D

I think some people have trouble with region-locked gifts/keys too.

Ah, yes. I should say something about that. I'm just not sure what, exactly, I should say. Do you have a concise explanation we could use?

About some key sellers like GMG (GreenManGaming) :

  • Some key sellers (like Green Man Gaming) provide a region-restricted key as they detect your region and assume the key is going to be for a personal use.

Do not buy from Green Man Gaming without being sure that the key is going to be region-free if your intention is to give the key away. You might end up with your winner being unable to activate the key in his region.

3) You can't give away region-locked gifts/keys. As with the case of non-steam giveaways, some winners may possibly try to trade or something after having marked the game as "not received," so before creating giveaways, make sure what you will give away is not region restricted .

No one ever bothers reading FAQ, no one will bother to read this one too. Most of the newcomers that should read this will instead just open a giveaway thinking that they'll get the game, as usual.

While it's possible this posting will be overlooked, I still felt it was worth writing. A lot of these "not received" giveaways have been by people who have been here a while and should know better.

Like many sites, I would presume most users of this one never come to the forum.

FAQ should be somewhere between Network and Logout otherwise it's almost pointless.

It should appear every time someone enters/creates a giveaway, with a "Yes, I understand" button cleverly hidden in the text.

And there would still have people messing up because they didn't read the FAQ.

Hell, there 's even a link to the bundled games FAQ written in plain sight when creating a giveaway , explaining why there 's an asterisk. Judging to how many
topics complaining about CV and asking why there ' s that asterisk, i think that most users are just retarded , otherwise i can 't see another explanation .

If the OP's first win was a not received, I think SG would implode.

If I had to mark my first win as "not received," I think I would implode. P

That actually reminded me to pull some entries I made which I gave up on winning and simply bought while they were on sale...

I have that ugly mark on my profile, but I'm too lazy to just buy and send the guy the gift anyways, since he is still an active SG user. I usually just rely on my 115 received to kinda drown out the 1 not received.
