So as the title suggests, this thread is about the Mother games. This series consists of 4 games: Mother, Mother 2, Mother 1+2, and Mother 3. Mother, Mother 1+2, and Mother 3 are Japan-Exclusive, and Mother 2 was released worldwide under the title "Earthbound" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. They are amazing RPGs. Mother was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Mother 1+2 was released for the Gameboy Advance, and Mother 3 was released on the Gameboy Advance. All of these games are stand-alone stories, and can be played in any order

So for the people who have played them; what do you think? Which one is your favorite? Who's your favorite character in the series? For me, my favorite is Mother 2, and my favorite character is Mr. Saturn, BOING!

For those who haven't heard of/played them; They are definitely great games. Mother 2 is my third favorite game of all time, only surpassed by FTL: Faster Than Light and Super Hexagon. You should try them out. And you may have heard of Ness and Lucas from the Super Smash Bros. Series? Well, Ness is from Mother 2, and Lucas is from Mother 3.

This is, like, the 5th thread I've made where it's like: "Here's a series of games I love that you might have not played. I'm gonna fanboy about them for a paragraph, then ask about opinions of the series!" xD

These games are fantastic!, playing them will make you smile and sometimes cry. Mother 2's gotta be my favorite but playing mother 3 is real close with the added nostalgia of things they reference in there. BOING.

I'm aware of the series, but despite trying both the second and third games through emulation, I couldn't really spark an interest in them.

So much has been made of these games that I think anyone new to the series probably would end up disappointed.

Shouldn't they localise the Mother series if they added characters from it to SSBB, despite most people having never heard of them before - eg. Lucas?

Nintendo will never localize any Mother game. How do I know this? A fan project that lasted 3 years translated Mother 3 into English, and was never stopped by Nintendo. Reggie Fils-Aime and Mother 3 is the equivalent to Gabe Newell and Half-Life 3. Also seen here

I've heard of the game Earthbound but haven't played it. Thanks for the daily dose of game trivia.

I love three the most followed closely by 2.

I loved the games, but I'm not happy that the developers didn't have the common sense to realize that maybe, just maybe, using copyrighted work (to the point where the Brawl remix team didn't catch that Porky's theme intro uses the same melody as the intro of the Godzilla theme) in their games might not bode well with American and European companies.

I'm playing Earthbound right now on my PSP SNES emulator. I never finished it for the longest time because I knew it was a long game. I started it up again a month ago and still playing it here and there during breaks and commutes. I'm finally near the end of the game now that I'm at Magicant.

Probably after the game; I'll download the mother 3 rom and the english translation patch. I'll play it on PSP GBA emulator.

I never tried Earthbound Zero (mother 1). Heard it's hard and really badly polished compared to earthbound. It's like going back in time.

Well, Imagine Earthbound with a smaller world, lower quality graphics, and much harder. It's, like, the beta of Earthbound. However, I love Mother. Yes, it is REALLY hard, but it is really fun, too.

I always wanted to play these games, but the way the combat is, just watching still images where your characters aren't even shown... I don't know, it just pulls me back.

I think it's worth it. After all, this game isn't the prettiest of it's time. It's all about the story. You're really missing out.

I love Mother 2, my favourite JRPG of all time. The first one isn't so good but it's interesting. Have yet to play the third...

Nothing has ever come close to matching the unique style and charm that Earthbound has. It's one-of-a-kind amazing game. If not for Chrono Trigger it would probably be my favorite RPG ever.

And if you've ever played Earthbound you should probably seek out the excellent fan translation and play Mother 3. Not as good, but still fantastic and charming, and way better than most RPGs that I've played in my lifetime.

Did you ever realize how messed up this actually was:

"Ness -> Bash -> To the Cop"

And this is after Ness takes down an entire street gang of "punks", with a baseball bat. At like the beginning of the game.

Earthbound was probably my favorite out of them. Mother was a little too archaic for me and mother 3 just wasn't the same. 'Poo gains PP by drinking water!' still makes me giggle.

Isn't Mother 1+2 just a collection with Mother 1 and Mother 2?
Yeah, I never played any of them, but I plan to! It's just that my backlog is enormous. I'm playing HL and HL2 mods on Steam right now, Okami on PS2, Parasite Eve on PS1, MGS4 and Demon's Souls on PS3 and a ton of Zelda games on Wii. I want to play through all the Zelda games first before I start playing another series on a Nintendo system. So it will take some time till I get to the Mother series. Oh and The Walking Dead on Steam, before everything else I have to play this!

It is, but it still counts as a Mother game. xD

Also, looks like you have nothing set for SNES on your backlog, so there's that :p. But I understand. Just as long as you get around to playing this masterpiece!

Mother 3 is the best by quite a lot for me (because of the storytelling), but Earthbound is great too. I don't like the combat in any of them, and the graphics in Earthbound just seemed awful to me for quite a while before I developed a taste for them. The games mostly win affection based on their charm and ability to evoke empathy rather than their gameplay. I never tried the first, due to lack of interest based on what I've read about it.
