It was a wild ride, congrats to everyone involved with the game, one of my top 10 games of all time.

I've never played Terraria, but everywhere I'm hearing that this will be the death of it. It is one big jokey exaggeration or am I missing something completely?

Well, the game has tons of content. TONS. But, there was still more planned.

Grossly exaggerated. For $10, the amount of content that has been added post release is absolutely astounding. The devs went above and beyond. They all deserve a break, if that's what they want. The game will be fine. Sure, it won't be quite as amazing anymore (some people have already explored everything there is to do), but it's tough to ask the dev to put in anymore time into the game.

It's sort of an exaggeration. After this, there will be no more bug fixes or content or anything like that. Something that's been due for awhile is dedicated servers, or a server list

what do you mean by that? you can setup a dedicated server since stone age

Gaslamp Games (Dungeons of Dredmore) is offering to take over support. We'll see how that goes.

Here's their twitter https://twitter.com/#!/GaslampGames I'm not sure how to link to specific tweets.

That would be AWESOME! Gaslamps are VERY talented and I hope they will add more humor into the game.

They just did a retail boxed launch and now this announcement, kinda inconsistent. But nevertheless it is indie games, lets look forward to Starbound

Sure hope the Gaslamp rumor is true..

To be fair, a lot of developers simply release the game and then leave it, never giving any extra content or even patches. Oh well...

Have you been keeping up with it at all? Jeb hired a new guy which he is epically changing the game with his work (Mainly on the AI's), Plus the Mod API IS coming.

I expect 1.2 to be coming out sometime THIS month, which will be a huge update. Seriously, I cannot wait for it.

You know, I think it was back in '.7 that Notch said that you would get proper skills, and have proper NPC's running in a patch or 2 - The lack of both on release, with more promises of "soon" resulted in my not buying the game.

That's why I'm fine with Blizzard - They'll release the game when it's done, and not "We'll release it now, but should maybe probably fix the stuff soon... ish... maybe"

Of course they hired new people... someone has to add the new snooping/spying content that Notch mentioned.

Though I may concur that support-stopping less than a year after the release (may 2011) is a bit odd.
OTOH they already added shitload of content and bugfixes.

Lol, PC gamers are spoiled. Have you forgotten the days when you bought a game on a console and that was it? No billions of updates to extend its lifespan by 100 years. Play it till you're bored, then move on to other games. :)

Except its been the nature of PC gaming from the beginning to improve upon the original product well beyond the initial run by the developers. Games such as Fallout, X-com, and especially Jagged Alliance 2 all have gotten excellent improvements by the community many, many years after their initial release.

To be satisfied with the game as it is released is nothing more than complacency and furthermore, goes against the very foundation of this progressive society.

PC gaming did not start with Fallout and X-Com. In 'the beginning', when you bought a game, that was it. No bug fixes, no new content. Done.

You're forgetting that Terraria doesen't have a definite end, you just run out of challenges eventually. That's why i think it's ok to want new content from a game like this.

"Have you forgotten the days when you bought a game on a console and that was it?" This only shows what kind of mentality you have about it.

I havent forgotten the days when after playing a good game i started looking for mods or started doing them myself.

Not spoiled, we just dont like to sit on our asses expecting people to do things for us :)

The game isn't dead. It's just no longer going to be supported by it's makers.

That aside, I'm looking towards Starbound. Seems more fun.

Paid 2.50 for it, spent 88 hours in the game already and haven't even achieved everything (not that I've spent most of my time boss hunting or anything). Still a great game and going to be about the best you can do for play value vs money.

Wow, I love this game, and am sad to see it go to see it dropped so quickly. They should at least do two last things. Add mod support, and let fans take over development for additional content.

Even if they suddenly drop all support for this game, it is still one of the biggest gems in my Steam library. Over 100 hours and counting and I STILL haven't done everything yet. And that's partly because I've spent some of that time decking out a multiplayer server with some acquaintances.

This game has epically good bang for the byte. At a basic size of about 20 megs (or maybe less), it's gotten me more playtime than TF2.

IDK i got the game during the winter event for free and Ive played 40 mins and haven't touched it, its very boring unless you have like 5 friends with you unless im missing something, i doubt terraria will die though.

I've heard it does kinda start off a bit slow, but picks up steam (no pun intended) as you discover more and more you can do with the game, in terms of crafting, building, customizing, and exploring.

The gameplay is definitely smoother and easier once you get higher-level equipment, though.
