yep, another of those thread, since not many people seem to have noticed this one yet

All you have to do is to join their steam group, provide your community id+email adress at their website and thats its :)
(and voting, obviously)

PS: The devs of Survival Island used to held such promo at the whos gaming now discussion threads but since that specific thread got locked (and no info on their gl page) it is yet unknown whether or not they follow this one and exactly in which form.

Edit: closed the other thread due to to the amount of bitching and people screaming spam and shit. If somebody wants to make one then fine. But I dont want to get into the target of assholes because of it. As I pointed out, Whos Gaming Now also does feature many gl games, and how come, nobody throws shit at them? Hypocritical much?

actually thats a great idea
however the problem is that most of these voting promos tend to end over quite quickly (due to the high exposure and votes thex have high chances to be included in the next bunch of gl-ed games) so that could of a problem. I actually did thought about that though
Until then,I think individual threads will be just fine (rest mostly handled by the Whos Gaming Now?! team anyway)

I've been doing a lot of this lately due to having my own game on greenlight and i can tell you 1 thread covering such things would always have something to post :)

I might do one if I can gather enough currently running promos of such (cause as right now, I dont have info about any other one)

Well i'll be doing a final promo soon, just waiting on it going live (i can pass you links to start the post), you should also sign up to who's gaming now on steam, and post a thread in the greenlight discussion forum, Devs will come post their to let you know.

Afterall no one turns down free publicity.

Wuuuut? They give you one, if you enter your mail and reserve it on many groups/sites, just joining a damn group doesn't do a thing, also the game has to get greenlit before.

Sorry, but downvoted.

We don't need Steam to turn into a dumping ground for a million and one hidden object games (that's what the Big Fish Games site is for). It's already bad enough with publishers dumping old/ancient games from their back catalog on Steam, crappy ports from mobile platforms making their way onto the service, etc.

Despite all these threads, I don't think I've seen a single person post their concern about the obvious security issues all of these pose.

They ask for your SteamID and e-mail so they can send you the key afterwards, but have you considered the fact that you're giving them 2/4 pieces of information required to access your account? The only thing they're missing is the password or security questions. If they're lucky, they could create a forum and have the people enter those remaining two pieces of information there!

Not to mention Steam Guard doing what it was designed to do.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Woooooosh!

SteamGuard doesn't send it to the e-mail address attached to your Steam account or anything like that...

If you're dumb enough to use the same information and get into that situation in the first place, chances are their e-mail uses the same password as well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haha exactly. If they have your Steam name, email address and Steam password; chances are they will also have the email's password for a large chunk of the userbase. Not everyone thinks to use different passwords for each service.

I was simply throwing the information out there in case some people had not thought about it.

Quite frankly, if someone had said "SSL is not as secure as everyone thinks it is" a month ago, everyone would have laughed and called them paranoid.

When someone sends a gift to your e-mail, it's sent to the actual e-mail, not to an attached Steam account. As such, you do not have the use the same e-mail address on SteamGifts as you do on Steam.

My steamgifts mail is not my Steam mail address ;)
And I didn't enter my Steam mail on this site as well.

Doesn't make it any less dangerous, but I believe they are misunderstanding the term login. I saw similar wording on Paranormal State's greenlight offer before users quickly corrected them.

You just don't use the same email address that you used for Steam. EVER.

I just use my throwaway email address for these kinds of promos.

But yeh, this is a good point for anyone using the same email address that they use for Steam.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I'd hope that people most wouldn't provide the same email as registered to their Steam account. But, if they're using the same password on both accounts, then that's the least of their problems.

Your "join their steam group" actually links to the Greenlight page, you should fix this. In the meantime, everyone else, the link for the Steam group you need to join to qualify for the free game is http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Pumpkinheadology

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think promoting a game is fine and all but.... resorting to tactics like, free key if the game greenlit, automatically flags the game as trash. Sure, greenlight is kind of a mess, but the game should speak for itself to get through the process. Keep the shovelware off of steam. The sad thing is tactics like this work, and they push more deserving games down on the greenlight list.
