I do prefer to get steam games as it is my biggest library, but also have origin and desura and maybe accounts with other dl games but i jst tend to avoid disc copies that dont redeem on steam.

no.

in fact I try to avoid them a little, (and generally I avoid games that require steam with no other options no matter where you buy it just because)problem is most other drm are worse and too many people are selfish dicks for drm free to ever be a thing. so I end up needing one of the clients more often than not and while steam isn't any better than the others it seems large enough that my odds of needing more than one are lowest if the one I picked was steam(well you know, for the steam games that don't use other drm too, sometimes I just pass on something...no way I'm touching sim city for instance)

But I also like desrura and gog too. not just using steam.(if its on gog I get there, if desura has no other drm it beats steam, steam(alone no other drm)easily beats limited installs cd codes(they never answer my emails to get it reset so after 3 computers no more game), unlimited install but only one at a time cd codes beat steam though, but those are getting rare since 10 years ago... steam has alot of sales so sometimes that helps them)

Humble store (or other direct from dev(unless they attach something horrible to it)) beats everything

but mostly it just doesn't matter. I don't care overmuch what brand

I am also trying to avoid Steam as much as I can. But sometimes there's no option at all.

I prefer Steam games, but I do have a few on GOG, Desura and Origin that aren't available on Steam.

no, i also have some GoG.com games and a couple of other , usually selfpublished. But i tend to prefer steam for it's convenience

been using steam awhile now and never really get it when people talk about how convenient it is. is it that hard to just say go to gog's website and download an installer vs doing it(from steam not gog obviously) through the steam app?
I mean the unorganized unsortable list you get in steam library seems to counterbalance the convenience of having them all in one place rather than having to open a web browser to download, and that disadvantage goes up the more items you have in the list, and the more items in the list the more people like the autoupdating so that seems to get balanced too.

Is there something I've been missing from steam? cause if so I should probably use whatever it is

if you mean the update thing thats been more an annoyance than a help so far. Can I sort the list?

Usually i keep a lot of games installed, so the autoupdate comes in handy, in general autoupdating is a very crucial feature for me this days, as i get older i don't have that much time to do maintenance.

Also ,most of the time, i have steam open, so installing a game is just open library, double click on game-next-next and wait. I find this very easy to do than having to go trough my bookmarks to find the correct site i have that particular game, remember or locate the password, manually downloading, and the install itself.

Another example, i wanted to play Dayz, had Arma from GMG, bought Arma OA on amazon, installed , etc, but then i had to do some reinstall and dual booting, there i wish i had the game on steam, as it takes care of installation, while using the same files. But since it was non-steam version i had to reinstall the 17GB again because there is some unique key generated only on the installation that the game doesn't work with it. I had also demigod on impulse(now gamestop) it was a pain making it verify existing files, had to redownload the whole thing again, plus having to find the mail, password, and serial key. I got Indiegala colossus just so i could add demigod to steam.

I don't have any problem with the list, it's sorted alphabetically and i can make groups for the games that i care, and those groups get synced on steam cloud, and you get the search on top if you have many games, not long ago i discovered you can "search as you type" eg:while in library, type 'left' and you land on left4dead.

But i agree that the sorting aspect is lacking and much could be done to improve it. Also agree that the fact you can't disable autoupdate is an annoyance in some scenarios. I haven't had a problem there yet, but i can see that it can get in the way of modding, unwanted patches, restricted internet access, etc. So i like when devs/pubs offer drm-free versions as it solves most of this.

You CAN disable autoupdates. Right-click on the game -> options/properties -> Autoupdates -> Disable. It's just that simple.

Last time i checked, you can't, at least just like that. With that setting you can delay them until you launch the game, so if you choose to not automatically update, the updates are just postponed and the game will still have to update until you are allowed to play. This could also be a long time depending on the size and connection speed. It was also kind of bugged as you may find that it reset itself to 'Always keep updated'.

In the end, to make it work you had to change to offline mode every time you wanted to to play the game, and regularly check that the setting doesn't reset.

This was last year and could have been fixed tough, as i haven't keep up on changelog or tested it.

thanks.

ah, so you can search, that makes up for the sorting people who have alot of games. I'm going to figure out how now.

so mostly its the updates that are helpful(i just tend not to get alot of them new enough to have had an impact, they're usually stable by the time I get around to purchasing), wasn't sure if it was their save data cloud or something or their mod workshop thing since I hadn't tried those yet.

I don't buy games

Not me. It's a bonus if a game can be redeemed on Steam, but I tend to avoid games that require Steam to install or play. If a game is available directly from the devs through Humble Store and comes with both Desura and Steam codes then that is where I buy it from. Otherwise I prefer getting games from GOG or Desura.

yes

if a game I'm interested in is not available on steam, then I'll just pirate it without feeling bad (but will buy it if it is released on steam later)

I do not see the logic in this.
If you are pirating a game, you aren't getting it on steam, therefore it is equal to buying it elsewhere.

I want all my purchased games to be on steam, simple as that.

So? I still do not see the logic behind it. You complain that the game isn't on Steam, but are happy to have it on your PC so long as you aren't paying a penny. Sure, it is free, but you still aren't getting it where you want it.

Yes, I download them for free beacuse I want to play them but they aren't available where I want them to be, and I don't want to support/use any other online service. If they want my money, release their product on steam and don't force me to use their client.

Permalink

But then they are forcing you to use Steam, which is just as bad. If you truly had a problem with being forced to use a client, you would be against Steam too.

Since I like steam I don't see any problem with it, if they are forcing me to use my preferred client. And I don't say to make their games steam exclusive, just make them available on steam too so their costumers can choose where they want to play them.

I must admit I agree with you, bannoltuk.
For me, Steam it's like a console. You have a platform where you play games. I don't use Desura because then I'd feel the need to "feed" my library with games. So, if a game is both on Desura and Steam, why not choose Steam?
If I want to play a NES game I'm not going to pay a ton for it on ebay, I'm just going to download the ROM and play it without feeling "guilty".
I often play free games (Abobo's Big Adventure, for example). Do you want me to PAY for your game? Ok, release it on Steam then.

Yes I do try my best too buy steam games as its a pain to be installing CD's. I got about 5 games now from 2 Christmas ago still in their plastic wrap because it just a pain to install them. Where as with steam installing is really just downloading in the background as I do something else.

Not all games feature an autopatcher, and i don't really have time to check for updates for each game so, yes, i prefer buying Steam games. Or Desura. Definitely not Origin though.
