Thanks for the heads up! But in all honesty, I don't think it's the best idea to get attention to your game by providing free copies of it.

That's the best option I have. The game's greatest strength is its super addictive gameplay - which you cannot evaluate until you actually play the game. One way to work around it is just to give it away for free and hope that people will talk about the game to their friends, post youtube videos etc.

But you will have almost no profit. Because some jerks will signup 10 different emails to give to all family, friends and sell the rest.

Even if 10000 people sign up - it's a mere 0,02% of Steam user base. There's still 99,98% users who can buy my game when it's released on Steam and won't even look at it when it's not.

I can almost guarantee that you'll have some exploiters signing up hundreds if not thousands of email addresses.

Why? If other people can get he game for free, it's not like it has value on the market.

I have no idea - ask them. The game being worthless didn't stop people from exploiting Metro 2033, Anomaly Warzone Earth, The Maw, etc when they were given out for free.

"Would you buy this game if it were available in Steam?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the developer's chucking it out for free for votes instead of getting greenlit on actual merit."

Edit: Oh, also, some people have been under the impression this game is still in production and saying "it'll look/play better on release." From the Greenlight page: "The game is already finished and ready for release on Steam for price as low as one dollar. It has also been very successful on Xbox 360 where it was first released and made it to Top 100 all-time best selling Xbox Live Indie Games." I would like to direct you to where my $1 XBLA zombie money went: I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1

Same as all the devs putting their game into bundles. Giving their brand new game away at pennies per copy in hopes of all the bundle buyers giving them upvotes since they'll want their "free" Steam key later.

It's really the only 3 methods of getting Greenlight votes unless you're a celeb or have a successful Kickstarter. Very few people look around in Greenlight so devs need some kind of gimmick to get people to look/vote at all.

Except Hashbang et all never begged for upvotes. They advertised, at probably quite considerable expense. The games in bundles? Not all of those will ever reach Steam. Even the ones that do don't always give Steam keys. Not to mention, that's actually a transaction, even if they only get a pittance. This is giving out the game to anyone that comes along in exchange for an upvote. At worst, it's begging and shows a lack of confidence in your game*. At best, it's trading.

*Sure, word of mouth is great and is likely to be the sole driving force for any Greenlight game, even if it makes it, but that's still something you have to earn by actually having a good game. A demo and advertising would suffice for that. Maybe award free copies to those who play that demo and get the highest score or play the longest or win the race with the lowest time on them, that's your choice. But promising free copies just so you can get onto Steam in the first place doesn't inspire me with confidence that your game is actually worth playing. It screams "get us into a place where we can earn money before people hear how bad this is." I could be wrong. I hope I am. I hope this game is brilliant and seriously succeeds. But that's the strongest impression this tactic gives: this game is bad, please don't notice before we can rake in the cash.

I'm pretty confident with the game since it had been really successful on Xbox Live Indie Games - its trial version was downloaded 160,000 times out of which 60,000 people have bought full version - that's nearly 40% conversion rate. On PC however it's nearly impossible to sell your games digitally outside Steam - people are so used to having every title stored conveniently in their Steam library that they won't even look at your offer unless you have a Steam key included.

Fortunately, Steam is aware of that and they are already going to do away with greenlight anyway. They just need to overcome technical difficulties and the recent batch of 100 greenlit titles proves they're on a good way.

I get that. I'll admit, I don't tend to use my DRM-free games from bundles because I have a habit of losing digital games unless they're attached to an account somewhere. But why not try launching on GOG.com or Desura as well, promise free Steam to those purchasers (maybe use the Humble Store to make things simpler)? Gets the game out there, gets you money, gets you a little media hype, reviews, gets a customer base who likely have vested interest in a Steam key, so they'll help you drive the Greenlight without, well, this tactic. I do hope your game succeeds. All games (except maybe War Z) deserve to be crafted with love and deserve their moment in the spotlight (okay, yes, even War Z). It's the tactic that I have the issue with. It seems cheap.

It's kind of sad that developers have to give away free things to be successful on the Greenlight. I don't see a problem with YOU doing it (as long as you are ok with it), because you probably can't get publicity any other way and many other developers are trying to do it too. I just think that the system should be changed so that being good would be the part of the game that would get it Greenlit and not publicity by famous Youtubers or giveaways (and if that kind of system is impossible, the system should be removed).
