It's the twenty year cycle, where at any given point in time, people are most nostalgic for how things were twenty years prior.
Happy Days first aired in the 70s, and it was set in the fifties. That 70s Show aired in the nineties, and was set in the seventies (duh). Not exactly a hard and fast phenomenon, but it crops up a lot.

Mobile phone sizes are increasing out of necessity, not nostalgia. In order to make them able to do more things, you need more parts. We've currently reached a peak as to how small we can make those parts. The end result: until we can make them smaller again, the phones must get larger if they are to be more advanced.

I love 80's music but the 90's comes in a close second.
Many of my favorite games came out in the 90's: Fallout, Jagged Alliance 2, X-Com...
The 80's also had Ronald Reagan who was one of the best presidents in US history. Aside from his ill-conceived "War on Drugs" the guy was genius.

All i got to say is it seemed everyone had some money in the 90's... jobs were everywhere, gas was cheap, and the economy was good.... not like now a days
and you mentioned music... but where is Nirvana at? the first album from Mudvayne, Static-X and OzzFest. the second Woodstock and there was so much more in the 90's
And actually Ice Ice Baby was technically released in 1989 on his debut album Hooked...

I was going by the wiki "July 2, 1990" so I did not see anything other than recorded in 89. You are also completely correct, the economy seems to be doing so much better. It was not always required to have a dual income household just to scrape by either.

I never liked DS9 when I was younger. Too much politics, bored me to death. Now, though, I love Game of Thrones, so I want to give DS9 a real proper go so I can fully appreciate episodes like this.

Oh, SG-1, how I miss you. I never liked anything of B5 for the same reason I disliked DS9, but I saw some of the better episodes of DS9 and always thought "Maybe later." B5 just sucked for me until I watched the reviews the guy I linked above is doing. Now I really want to watch that as well.

Babylon 5 is brilliant! i got it an sg-1 pretty cheap:) all originals! I do have an extra copy of b5. Which i lend people if they want to watch it. so they don't ruin my originals! b5 gets better with age. If you watch it and are observant. There is a lot of philosophy and spiritualism in it.

Music-wise, the best part about the 90s is that they're over. Granted, there were a couple of really good songs and a few great bands, but (at least where I live) it was all drowned out by a deluge of ridiculously crummy techno and unimaginably unimaginative Euro-Dance-crap. I shudder at the thought...

I recently started watching In Living Color again recently and something about this one show reminded me how much I actually did really like the nineties. Sounds like I'm about the same age as you too, although Nintendo didn't really take off here so everyone had a Sega of some sort.

That game was sooo much fun, I actually played it a few years ago, still fun. That, and F-Zero, then later F-ZeroX brings back fond memories. My best friend at the the time and I would spend hours during the summer playing them, listening to the awesome sound track.

I was still in my teens / under 21. I loved most of the music, games and the TV.
I am a Star Trek fan, and I was a fan of a series not many liked. I liked Deep Space Nine, and I especially liked the character 'q' even if he was in only one episode this series and had a larger role in The Next Generation.
As far as music, I would have to say that the song that is #1 is not at that spot because of quality, or lyrics, but because of how memorable it is and how every time I hear it it brings back memories.
the Presidents of the United States of America had a great song called Peaches among the longest name I think I have ever heard of. However, I think I preferred kitty, or dune buggy, but they had a ton of great songs.
The SNES was released, giving us gems like one of the best games ever Chrono Trigger, Sonic Blast Man I & II, Super Mario Kart, Rock 'n' Roll Racing, so many I don't want to list them because this would go on forever. We were also introduced to the N64, the best controller ever made, and some more great games, like one that was overlooked that I loved. The name of it was Hybrid Heaven.
Random trivia to make some of you feel old. The SNES was release worldwide from 90-92, but not discontinued until 2003. The N64 was release 96-97. Not discontinued till mid 2001.
