People should really learn how to handle their vehicle before taking friends out in it. That boating GIF always reminds me of this video.

Most of these games were already dead and those who are still played can solve by using Hamachi or similar, not a big deal. Unfortunately, it had to happen sooner or later.

Don't think the original Unreal Tournament or other Unreal games used Gamespy. If it did, I'd never have been able to find any matches. Because anything that used a gamespy login etc. never worked for me.

As long as it doesn't affect single player, I couldn't give a shit.

I don't even do that. I don't want to ruin my gaming experience with some twat getting annoyed.

Yes, but you are unlikely to find someone randomly sitting waiting for a game anyway. You can still connect via direct IP, play by email, or LAN (Evolve)

Yikes, lots of great games are about to lose a big chunk of their replay value... Many of these games can still be played over a network using 3rd party stuff, but nowhere near all of them. Even fewer if you want public servers. And you're S.O.L. if the online aspect was game content like user created levels or challenges, or global highscores.
Sort of the same deal with Nintendo's Wii network shutting down, but hopefully the Dolphin emulator ends up getting some kind of 3rd party server support (they already have netplay/P2P, which is pretty good).
I'm hoping there's a movement towards less of a dependence on 'online only' multiplayer in games, so we can go back to the more social days of couch multiplayer/LAN parties. At the very least, devs need to put in support for creating and connecting to privately-owned servers.

Oh no, not Bad Company 2! I love that game. :(
Edit: Reddit is saying Bad Company 2 uses EA servers, so it won't be affected. Hopefully!

At least EA seems to have confirmed that BF 2142, BF2 and BC2 will be transitioned away from GameSpy so that they can still be played:

Good Riddance, gamespy was trash from day 1 imo. Sad seeing so many good games being effected by this but i am glad it is finally shutting down. Had nonstop issues over the years getting that shit to work right.

Hopefully the games don't get removed from steam because of this.
