I think that the connection between Steam and Steamgifts times out when they try to retrieve your profile info so it assumes that it is private. I got the same message yesterday and just reloaded it a few times and it was then able to sync.

I had the problem this morning.
Changed my Steam profile link, made my profile private, logged out, logged in, changed my profile name back, made my profile public.
Sync successful.

Yesterday I tried syncing and I got a message telling me to make my profile public. It already was public. I refreshed the page and it worked again.

Guys, it's been confirmed as a problem with Steam Community. I'm sure this surprises none of you. Unfortunately, this means the only fix is waiting until Steam stops acting up. Again.
