New Vegas has better writing, a better realized, if at a glance less interesting environment, more events, better characters, better gameplay, and considerably better written factions.
As well as being directly connected to Fallout 1 and 2.
Fallout 3 is superficially good, but its setting is nowhere near as well planned and justifiable, as well as having comparatively terrible DLC and a worse campaign/way worse writing.
The worst New Vegas DLC is miles above the worst Fallout 3 DLC, which is abysmal (Mothership Zeta. It really sucks)
Then again, F3 GOTY might be cheaper. On sales, NV GOTY goes for 10 bucks though.

Yes, New Vegas happens in a giant desert, which happens to have more interesting areas and events than the wasteland in Fallout 3. But it is in a giant desert, the Mojave Desert.
Again, Fallout 3's environment SEEMS more interesting at a glance, and has more instantly recognizable landmarks, but it is less well realized, and has less to do than New Vegas.

Exactly. I was a fan of 1 and 2, so NV is much closer to the originals. Also, it picks up on the story that interplay was working on for fallout 3 before they went under. Look up Van Buren, you can even play the semi-made Fallout 3 from before it was scrapped.

Better written characters, better character motivations, better dialog, more varied dialog, going more into depth for the reasons of each faction/leader, NPCs that are more interesting, morally ambiguous characters, quests with multiple valid outcomes that are not strictly black and white deals, multiple and better character growth possibilities (I mean that as in writing, but also branches in gameplay), and a tighter focus on narrative.
Hell, if you can't see how the writing in Dead Money is superior to the writing in The Pitt, well, that says something.

Fallout: New Vegas is better in terms of gameplay and story for me.
The only thing Fallout 3 beats Vegas is in the exploring and music part, but as for the exploring you are in a desert after all.
Also get the Falout:New Vegas Ultimate Edition if you can.
Fallout GOTY has been $5 several times.

I personally prefer Fallout 3 and it's GOTY version. The capital wasteland was a lot more atmospheric and more interesting by comparison to the Mohave wasteland. I didn't like the Vegas strip, whereas I actually got lost a few times whilst traversing the ruins of DC. I also liked the story of Fallout 3 more, and of course the Enclave :D
New Vegas has true ADS which is better, but that's about the only thing I think they improved upon.

Other than the subway locations, I had more fun exploring the world in Fallout 3. New Vegas was good, but locations weren't as interesting.
However, the characters, story and endings were more interesting in New Vegas, and those are the reason I've done repeated playthroughs in New Vegas. In Fallout 3, it was simply to go loot places all over again while going in with knowledge of the world.

I completed NV before I played FO3...I can say, FO:NV has spoiled my FO3 experience.
While I liked the intro and main story of FO3 so far, but FO3 has less sidequests than NV.
In NV, I like to doing sidequests before entering main story. Meeting people, learning their behavior, doing many chained sidequests so I explored wasteland not for nothing. After I find almost all sidequests, I entered New Vegas and continue the main quest. In FO3, there's not much sidequests to do so you basically just have to follow the main quest to explore the areas.
<spoiler>(I'm on level 20 and I haven't met with my Dad yet just because I busy exploring areas looking for sidequests)</spoiler>
Also I feel FO3 lacks variety of weapons...and ability to mod your weapon (you can by installing WMK mod though). But still I enjoyed workbenches in NV. And oh, the radios. I installed radio mod in my FO3 so I can listen to Mojave Music Radio playlist. I just loved that music other than listening some random babbling in GMR :P
So yeah...in conclusion FO:NV is more superior to me. I can't help but thinking some memorable moment in FO:NV while playing FO3 just because how empty it is.

Aren't Moira's sidequests big enough to explore half the wasteland and get a bunch of other sidequests?
And concerning weapons, i'm glad with my Fisto!, I don't even need all those guns most of the time, except to snipe a couple of unreachable targets:)

Well yes, but just it. I didn't even think of her sidequest. Currently I only have 3 sidequests active to do outside of main quest and DLC. While in NV I can encounter many sidequests almost in every location I explored. That's what makes exploring in NV more fun to do, at least for me.

Im gonna tell you the same thing I tell everyone, if you played the previous Fallout games (before 3) you will probably like NV better but if you didnt you will probably like 3 better. As far as DLCs, i think 3 had better DLCs as a whole but NV has Old World Blues which I like better than the Fallout 3 DLCs but NV also had Dead Money which I hated.

With mods there are equal
FWE + MMM + WMK (+ other mods but they are the most important) and fallout 3 becomes really hardcore

Fallout 3 wasn't Fallout at all if you're already know the universe (from magnificent Fallout and Fallout 2). F3 have only a big map with mostly empty ruins where you can loot and investigate, but it's still dull and empty which Fallout classics never was. Very few better-than-nothing characters, extremely poor main story, shitty sidequests etc. In New Vegas, on the other side, you have it all - rich and various storyline, many factions, a bunch of superior characters (just look at stories of companions!), many quests and different endings. Fallout 3 is just an eye candy with epic Three Dog Night, inspiring radio and fakken big and empty map with treasures. Fallout NV is the real Fallout 3 - that's my word

I havent played Fallout 1,2 i have played Fallout NV (PS3) for 20-30 hours but in my option (Its a great game don't get my wrong) its kinda empty dessert, dessert and again dessert BUT i agree better characters Random events and stuff, I have played Fallout 3 by a friend (PS3) for like 1-2 hours it was fully of ruins and stuff BUT The characters weren't that good in my option , There are enemy's everywhere but i didn't see any friendly NPC's it was a little dissapointed but Fallout 3 is made by bethesda , and Fallout NV got allot of creature's of Fallout 1 and 2 maybe thats why its maybe more in the Fallout universe?

No, it is more "Fallout" because in setting and plot, it follows from Fallout 1 and 2 instead of mimicking surfice trappings of the series, as well as having more moral choices, as well as considerably better writing, and a better grasp on the tongue in cheek humor of the series.
Because if there is one thing that Fallout is not, is completely self-serious.

I haven't played NV yet, but I spend around 300 hours in Fallout 3 GOTY. That's a great game!
DLCs are not as great as the main game though. It seems like they were built asap and have lots of bugs, which were never patched. Also their story is little bit stupid, yet funny:) But you have the main game anyway, which is awesome.
I heared, NV is better, so I decided to never try it, before I finish F3=) and I'm glad with my decision:) This way I have one more great game to enjoy. Who knows, if I could enjoy both in different order..:)

Fallout 3 felt more lonely, and always had that feeling of dread. The environment seemed much more hostile and hopeless.
New Vegas has a better story, but I didn't like how the setting was a fun-loving happy-go-lucky wasteland.
I liked them both, but would likely return to FO3 before NV.

I preferred Fallout 3 for the very same reason. Setting is what makes it for me in a Fallout game.
I really like the gameplay of New Vegas, and the story was much better, but exploring the emptiness of DC's surroundings was much more compelling than the emptiness (and sandy) surroundings of Vegas.
The best of best would be a Fallout 4, taking almost everything from New Vegas, but with a setting more like Fallout 3.

Areas connected? It's just a huge wasteland. Food? If everybody in New Vegas ended up eating gecko, the same can be said about everybody in FO3 eating the Brimins or something.
It's really not as bad as what people say. I think a lot of people are actively searching for inconsistencies instead of enjoying the eerines and devastation of both games.

I loved amassing all companions in Fallout 3 and raiding stuff. And I generally have nothing but fond memories of Fallout 3 - it was my first RPG, I never really liked the genre before. It was a captivating experience to explore the wasteland and I loved listening to Three Dog =D
However, New Vegas is better in most other respects. Fallout 3 is a great game but if you intend to play them both I suggest playing Fallout 3, as otherwise it might feel like a downgrade of a game.

Fallout 3 was my first experience in the "Fallout" Post-Apocalyptic universe and I have to say that leaving the vault for the first time was one of those gaming experiences that I will always remember. It truly felt like I was on my own exploring the world for the first time. Due to that experience, NV felt a bit like a let-down since I had already had the "moment" with Fallout 3.

I can't comment on FO:NV as I've not played it. FO3 on the other hand I have, I neither hate it nor love it - it just 'is'.
I had TES 4 Oblivion on disc a while ago and LOVED it, got Skyrim on release and played that a lot but just doesn't seem as good as my memories of Oblivion (I can't go back to it, I played it so much the disc cracked :( :( ). Got FO3 GoTY in Summer Sale, and as I say it is just 'meh' and I can't place my finger on why exactly.
It's possibly a combination of the game mechanics where you end up crippled if you take too much damage (it's a good idea to add difficulty but I think I'd prefer the game without it) and the cost of everything and the walking everywhere - I've not found a good replacement to this yet (haven't sunk much time into the game but still, within a couple of hours on Oblivion I'd stolen a horse for my travel needs and Skyrim has the travel-carts and the map is small enough to run across in a reasonable time, unlike FO3 and Oblivion) :| Takes so fecking long to get anywhere in FO3, especially if you have to walk round a pond of irradiated water rather than swim across a stream / pond like in Tamriel.
So of all RPGs of this type (open world, free to go where you like, do what you want) that I've played, I'd say Oblivion & Fable The Lost Chapters > Skyrim > FO3
Comment has been collapsed.
Fable is enjoyable if you have somehow heard absolutely none of the hype about the "freedoms" it was promised the games would give you. I recommend it, but don't really expect an open world or a ton of choice other than "be good or evil, or maybe a wimpy in-between"
Fallout, Skyrim, and Oblivion are all far above Fable though, imho.

Yea Fable isn't as big as Fallout / Elder Scrolls I'll agree, but it's fun and I only ranked it = Oblivion as it was the first quality RPG-esque game that I owned (had only played RTSs before that) so it was a bit of a turning point as far as gaming goes for me.

It's no where near as open world as Fallout / Elder Scrolls worlds, but it is still quite fun. I'd wait for Winter Sale to pick it up if you are thinking of it. I possibly will pick it up, despite having already completed it several times. Want to try and do it on the hardest difficulty, didn't do that before.

I haven't played Skyrim as much as Oblivion, something just seemed... different, though the hype-up was good
As for Fallout 3 I mainly bought it cause I always thought it'd be a futuristic Oblivion and yeah travelling is crap in it
Judging by your "fecking" I'm guessing you're a fellow Irishman:D

I'm English, there isn't many people use fecking but some of us do. Even then I don't use it often but I don't swear often either.

I think a lot of people who have played both will say New Vegas. Me included. A lot of it seems to be just personal choice though; the setting, the writing, the music, the player mods, and the overall gameplay is better in New Vegas. Also Odo from DS9 voices Mr. House :D
I can't speak for Fallout 3 GOTY, but NV has some pretty great add-ons. People seem to like Dead Money as the best of the 4, as its gritty and more difficult, but I personally liked Old World Blues best since it is absolutely fun and hilarious. If it's a straight up choice, go with New Vegas GOTY, its well worth the extras. Pick it up during the Christmas sale.

Fallout 1/2. End of story.
Seriuosly speaking, NV feels like a old good Fallout, 3 isn't that cool.

Fallout NV. Better gameplay, better story, better writing, better almost everything.
The only thing I enjoy more about Fallout 3 is the vaults and the stories behind them.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think Vault 11 (from NV) was one of the best "levels with hidden story" ever made. You goes inside thinking "ehh, just another Vault". Then, you hear that "what have we done, we're monsters" audio log. And then you read "Tom is known adulterer, vote him for Overseer" and all you can think is "what the f-...".
Great level. One of the best "single-levels", right next to Ocean Hotel from Vampire Bloodlines.
Comment has been collapsed.
Fallout NV improved almost every aspect of Fallout 3. But for some reason I enjoyed Fallout 3 more (and it's still one of my favorite games).
Also, keep in mind that there are a lot of great mods for Fallout 3 that make the gameplay on par with NV. Get both of them if you can.
