It's Phonebloks, a prototype of a customizable phone they want to mass produce.

There's no prototype, it's little more than some designer's wet dream right now.

I'm sure they could get it to work, but it just might be buggy as hell first time around.

It would be extremely hard to pull off, but I think it might work (with some key changes to the design of course).

Good concept, but I'm not convinced the phone companies will be interested. They're a bunch of greedy bastards and they want everybody to buy buy buy all new hardware all for the love of ca$h :-P.

PC companies are whining all the time that you can buy computer parts and build it custom like you want it, cause greed greed greed, but luckily for all of us that's not going to change. I really wish this would also work for smaller gadgets (or at least with software on them).

This would be cool, but I don't think were ready for this yet.
He wants support from the big companies, but why would they do that when they make so much money off planned obsolescence.

His best bet would be if a big company outside the industry wanted to break in.
Heck, if Microsoft doesn't pick up in market share after buying Nokia, they might even be interested.
The CEO for Nokia who will be leading the Microsoft device division said, in an interview about windows phone, "the single most important word is 'differentiation'" and this seems pretty different, it would definitely be a way to stand out.

I just hope that even if it doesn't get big support he can get this off the ground and try to build it up over time, it might not have a lot of diverse support at first but I think that has real potential.

This is my phone; I use it since 2005, but when it will finally "die", I might consider buying one of these phonebloks - I like the concept.

I had that one too, but its battery was already dead, so I changed it this summer.

Was gonna rant on all the technical reasons why the Phonebloks designer is smoking crack, but instead, here's something real, that actually exists from people who've tried:
http://buglabs.net/products/blocks
Please note the blog that hasn't been updated in almost two years.
Or the spam-filled forums where no one really cares anymore, and few ever did in the first place.
The idea was "new" five years ago and I don't believe that enough has changed in those five years to make a difference in the feasibility of this as a commercial product.

Electronic waste does suck. But this is not a rational answer. Swappable SD cards, we already have. Upgradable batteries, we already have. If my screen breaks, I can find a replacement on eBay. If a mainboard breaks, it's usually not in the best interest of the people selling you the phone to repair it, but they could -- and in some cases (just a bad solder joint), probably do and then resell as a refurb -- after selling you a new phone, because the mentality of most consumers is "well, it was time to upgrade anyway".

Yay lego phone! It's never gonna happen. Phones need to be fragile and break all the time so the companies can make ze money!

If it WILL happen, Apple will probably steal the idea (so forget about that "open platform" bs) and sell the phone for a million gazillion dollars, with the interchangeable parts costing from 599.99$ to 1599.99$ or some crap like that, cause hey, apple.
