Hey guys.

So it happened that we develop our first game - Caesar III idea/style successor - Caesaria.

Currently we are in a playable alpha stage and the first public build is about to be released. We went thru Steam Greenlight already, successfully. We were able to raise some little money for modelling and textures for the game which is nice. And for russian-speaking people we've done a series of articles on game programming and original Caesar III game logic - check it out, it's an awesome experience. For English speaking guys, here are 2 of those articles in English.

In future we plan on releasing it via Steam. The game will support both Windows and MacOS + Linux port will be available.

The reason why I'm creating this topic is to ask you to help us get more feedback and spread the word about Caesaria - it will help us to understand what true fans of Caesar III would like to see in our game. Also we would appreciate any help: modeling, localization, graphical artists are very welcome, etc.

So, feel free to check it out and tell us what you think, here or better on Steam.

Thanks! :)

Wow looks great, i wish you good luck with the project and i will be keeping an eye on it. I'v linked it to all my friends to spread the word. Any approximate date of release on steam?

Thanks a lot! Apx date - I would say somewhere in 2015. Our biggest problem at the moment is to create our own artwork/textures which takes a lot of time. We are not fans of Early Access games ourselves, but if people will be interested - we'll open the project under EAG rules by the end of the winter.

And thanks again for telling your friends. :)

Sadly there's not much i can do when it comes to art/textures but i'm sure there will be people who will be able to help with that, there's many Caesar fans around. Good luck with your project :)

sorry but it looks more ripoff than successor. I've played Caesar a lot and i see that it looks almost the same. It looks like you used the same assets like original game not mentioning that even title looks like 4 part of the game.
But you know, I hope you deliver sth new to that game because if you call it 4 it has to be some kind new and if it is successor, for me it means, that it uses what's best in original but it's not just remake to make it run in higher resolution.

CaesarIA is an open source remake of Caesar III game released by Impressions Games in 1998, it aims to expand the possibilities of the classical city-building simulators and to add new features showing the city life. Now the game work with Windows, Linux, Mac, Haiku and Android.

Looking forward to it!

so more like opentTDD. I'd say OP topic and text is a little misleading then.

If it will be as good as e.g mentioned openTDD, wish you luck

You are right about using original games resources. That is the reason why we don't release demo yet - we work on our own models, textures, user interface, artwork, music (we will have awesome soundtrack created exclusively for the game), etc. :) We announce them step by step on Steam and that's why we look for good graphical artists who could contribute, but we can't pay much unfortunately.

Personally I'm a HUGE fan of Zeus + Poseidon. I like the idea of mythical creatures being involved. I guess it is because it was more goal-oriented, not as much as 'build as big as you can," but grow your city for THIS and THAT.

And we will have Gods instead of mythical creatures. :)

I'm not sure if steam will allow the game on the platform. The whole DRM, intellectual property, open source thing is concerning me. How are you addressing this issue? Just curious, no need to answer if not inclined to.

EDIT: Are you re-working the game from the ground up? So it's technically not Impression Games property or something of the sort?

Currently, we are already greenlit by Steam. It wasn't our original intention to make money of it. If there will be a price tag on it - it won't be high and maybe (but not 100%) it will be a donationware game. All original resources including music, textures, models, artwork and so on will be completely our own - our own intellectual property. We tried to contact original developers btw, but couldn't reach them.

I understand now, thanks for the response!

You guys should create a Steam Group to keep us updated on the development and release date and other stuff!

We do it in Greenlight (the first link in the topic). :) You think a group would be better?

A group would be good. It is more appropriate and useful for keeping people informed and involved in the long run. The greenlight page is really mostly just for while the game is trying to pass through greenlight.

Yes, we have a very talented musician working on the soundtrack, so there is no doubt it will be good. Maybe not for everyone, but not like it was made by a kinder-gardener. :)

Google translate for the lazy...

Great theme! Just do not understand how and when you can actually play : |

  • We plan on going out " somewhere in 2015 " . Now we work our demo that we could already show , but will not release it until the time when we will have all of their resources, rather than borrowing from the original game . Redrawing models , textures, and so on takes a long time .

I suggest also hitting up the GoG forums since Caesar 3 is sold there. i know a quite a few artists that frequent the forums over there. you might have some excellent luck over there with that. i look forward to hearing more about your project & following your progress.
