I can not second this. I have bought 3 different games on Origin, and never did they charge me any "authorisation charge".
Maybe it's specific to your country?

Damn, that sucks. Been really hating EA these past couple years. Glad I've stuck with Steam. Thanks for letting me know that happened to you. Gives me another reason not to throw money into Origin/EA. I mean, what would have happened if you only had enough for the game itself on a credit card and they decided to take out that extra? They would have been making you pay overdraft fees...

that's exactly what happened. I was going to buy Mass Effect 2 for 176 rupees yesterday, i had 205 rupees, charged me 50 rupees couldn't buy it. Today i tried to buy Mass Effect for 111 rupees, i had 155 rupees, charged me 50 rupees couldn't buy it. Just plain and simple stupid.

EA charged 54 rs for Crysis and battlefield bad company 2 and they never charged me extra

Origin isn't that bad
Not buying from EA means they can't publish good games and people may loses jobs because of it
Look, I know people hate EA, but the games they publish aren't gonna be published by anyone else anytime soon. So quit your whining.

I'm pretty sure the quarrel between Valve and EA happened over microtransaction in games and purchasing DLC's with arbitrary points rather than with actual money.

I don't think that would be a problem any more, there are several games with IAP (in-app-purchases) on the Steam store.
Take "AirMech" or "A Game of Dwarves" for example.

In my humble opinion, EA can disappear and it could be a good thing. I can't remember of a really good EA game, at least these years. But I do remember a nice editor who made awesome games until EA bought it (Bioware) and turned its licences into short-term-profit-crap (Dragon Age, Mass Effect).
Neither you or me has the Truth, of course, we are talking about opinions :)

Except you're not losing anything as those pesky $4 will come back to you in a week.

If this is important then the vile practice of putting only as much money on your debit card as a game you want costs should be abolished.

Bought Bad Company 2 = Money is gone and no game in library, talked to support guys twice and all what i got is: We will be in touch via email and -15% code what cannot be used if the game is already on sale! G FUCKIN G!

There's a few, sims(but 500$ for a game is to expensive), BF(120$ is too expensive too, but if you could get it at lower price i consider it pretty good), rock band(probably the only game with a normal price and it's really fun).
And others? Kingdoms of amalur - generic piece of crap, dragon age - EA done their job to make this game anotthe mediocre rpg, mass effect series - corridor shooter with dialogs. Sports games? Copy paste every year. Racing - burnout copy paste and there you go - new NFS game, it's pathetic. Origin is alive only because of BF series.

I'm pretty sure they're alive because of american football games.

EA is greedy indeed, but I never experience this. People who say EA is bad and I am gonna be with steam, please be realistic. Steam has bad customer service, and this is a war between EA, Ubi, and Valve. Valve doesn't allow group to post deals to promote games on Origin. I don't think it is fair. And my opinion is they are all greedy, they are all bad. None of them are innocent and pure good.

It's common practice for companies to deny promotions for other companies. You won't see Hastings promoting something from Best Buy. Same for online distributors. One thing I do disagree with is not being able to state your opinion about some products. For example, if you were to say "Don't buy this game, it doesn't work on current OS", it's either going to get removed, or put on the very bottom of the page so it doesn't get seen. Not sure if Steam still does this, but I saw a warning about it on the Community hub somewhere. Saying a game has low quality is one thing, but straight up telling people not to buy it is apparently a no-no.

Most possibly that was (if that was) said about game hubs which are moderated by game developers. Some developers are too touchy. The latest example is Garry's Incident.

It would make more sense for a publisher to say that than Steam, true. I know I saw it somewhere (not sure what game it was, I was just browsing at that time). I don't know what happened with Garry's Incident. Not really all that interested in it, so I haven't kept tabs on it.

I agree there's no worse company in gaming than EA for countless reasons (particularly the way they nickel and dime us), and the Origin client is unexciting and featureless, nothing more than a downloader (compared to the community on Steam). I downloaded Sims 3 once and then an expansion pack and it corrupted the entire thing. With no file verification (like Steam) all I could do was uninstall a whole bunch of gigs and download them all over again.
As much as I love Steam for a billion other reasons, Steam does do one thing that I think is probably the worst business practice of any retailer, however, by denying us duplicate copies of games. If you go to Best Buy or Walmart and buy a Terminator DVD box-set, when you already have T2 you bought a year ago, Best Buy doesn't remove the copy of T2 from the box-set before you can buy it. You get the extra copy. It's incredibly bogus that Steam denies us extra copies of something we pay for.

It's a standard method for online merchants to check that your credit card is valid. Almost every online merchant will do this, so if you have a problem with them doing this, then you're pretty much out of luck.
If you let them store your credit card info, they will do this only the first time you use your card, and after that only if you haven't used your card with them for a while, typically 3-6 months.
As others have pointed out, the money is never actually removed from your account, it's only reserved. I.e., they "lock it" so that no other merchant can use it, but don't actually transfer it to their own account. Normally, reservations are used for things like the deposit on rental cars etc, and when you check in to a hotel, they will often reserve the room rate * number of days you're staying. This way, they can be sure that when you check out, you will be able to pay for the room. Or if you bang up your rental car, that they can collect the deductible on the insurance from you.
If having a few dollars "frozen" a couple days is such a big deal for you, then you should probably not be buying games in the first place. Either way, they're a fact of life with credit/debit card use, especially online use, so you either have to learn to cope with it, or start buying your games in person for cash.

I will say this again, the pre authorisation charge is not a first time thing, it happens each time even if store my billing information. If i make 6 separate orders they take the pre authorisation charge 6 times. And i know the standard procedure it's not my first time buying games online. And no other company keeps the charge for 4-7 days. They return the money within few hours or a day, not 4-7 days. Please read my post to understand the issue. And i didn't ask you to tell me if i can afford to buy games or not, i made this post to let you guys know what issue you may face if you buy from Origin. Please excuse me if i am rude.

Hate to say it but most likely its due to the country or where your card is billed from. If a company has issues with a certain region, stuff like this will happen to help stem off possible fraud.

Just one more reason to hate EA. I personally never buy anything from them. The only games I have on Origin I received from trades. I'll never purchase anything of theirs, unless I get it in the store, and it won't be for PC, because of DRM and other bs. Although it probably doesn't happen where I'm at, it's good to know what kind of crap they're pulling with other people. Good on you for putting this out there. Kudos.

just live without your few bucks for a few days, its still in your account/on your card just not accessible
preauth should go away for a purchase if it goes through
btw gas stations, restaraunts, and anything that has a rental service generally does pre authorizations to(aka redbox, hotels, car rentals, etc..)
and those are much higher
some preauth $1, some more(according to wiki, some gas stations in FL were preauthorizing $100)

I remember this happened to me as well when I bought Mass Effect 3 DLC off Origin. It's an unusual practice for sure, though in my case, EA did return what I was charged in about a week or so after I made the purchase.

Hi there,
Origin will charge a pre authorisation charge of 50 rupees(maybe 1$), every time you make a order. So if by any chance if any day you order four times from Origin you will be charged 200 rupees(4$) as a pre authorisation charge, and Origin will return the money within 4-7 days. This happens even if you save your billing information. I have bought games from Amazon and Steam, they never do this kind of stupid things to their customer. I tried to order twice so my 100 rupees is gone for 4-7 days, never buying from Origin again.
P.S.-I know this because i had a live chat with EA, and they cleared this up.
