Dear SteamGifts,

Do you think there will be a bigger sale on Christmas Eve or Day? Then our normal(kinda crappy) sales right now?

Just wondering.

I think it'll be just another day of the Steam sales. Wouldn't get your hopes up for much more. Has Christmas Eve ever been atypically crazy in the Winter Sale?

No, at least not last few times.

I believe I seen it once.. mostly because Steam is a company that likes money.. and the best day to throw a Christmas/Winter bash would be the day after Americans celebrate Christmas.. as a lot of kids and adults get money or giftcards...and especially now that Steam HAS giftcards.

Well, Steam already got their money from Gift Cards, so they should have the sale before Christmas with that logic. :p Then the impatient little bastards gotta pay full price!

They haven't done anything like that so far, I don't think this year would be any different

The sale has always been irreligious. There is no need to start now.

Okay,

For one. This is stupid. Hearing all this religious bullshit. What is so religious about a big fat overwight (half-bald) or black or white or green santa coming down your chimney to leave presents to the good girls and boys all over the world. Also, if Steam was celebrating a "winter" sale.. instead of a Christmas sale. They wouldn't have presents or lights or candy canes or snow globes or christmas stockings.. Seriously. this religious bullcrap is over 9000. Unless, your religion involves a big fat bald guy coming down your chimney commiting home invasion to bring you presents.. why the **** are you so mad?

If anything.. like people have said previous times.. it's more of a corporate holiday anything and Unless you are against corporations etc.. than I don't see any problem. Unless you just have a problem with the name. which then, I don't give a crap. call it whatever you like. Call it Pizzatmas.. or Glasstmas..or whogivesafktmas...

Well, Santa is not a job, it's a nickname of Saint Nicholas who exists only in Christianity. I don't know how chimneys and presents came to be, but that's not really important.
As for lights, candy canes, snow globes and stockings, they are merely symbols of the time of the year. Throwing it all away is a commercial suicide.
And I do have a problem with a name. With both parts of the name seeing as how you left "mas" in all your, uhm, suggestions. Basically I think that birth of someone's god shouldn't be more important than any other holidays that are going on at the same time. Hence why I don't want any bigger sales on that specific day.

christmas like most christian holidays is a ritual well bluntly stolen from the pre christian religions in europe, in this case celebrating the start of winter, most of us now in the west celebrate it as a secular holiday i personally walk a mile or so to my parents have dinner and then come home to see the traditional new dr who episode the bbc blesses us with of late, the christians can celebrate in their fashion seculurists like me in mine, the uk has relatively few bank holidays and nowadays its the only way some people get a day off it being christmas or easter so yeah leave it alone, it isnt about jesus birth for me certainly its about the one day a year i always see my mum despite my dislike of her husband so for some its just a day for family with little religious involvement, personally id put my name to a petition to rename it saturnalia but then i think dr sheldon cooper is the greatest character on tv :)

I have nothing against Christmas per se, I have plenty against it being more important than New Year. The latter is about spending time with your family, having fun and making resolutions you'll break the very next day; the former is about birth of Jesus.

I'm a athesist and I still celebrate christmas but I still have fun catching up with family and getting presents. You have to be realistic if they did more than just one religion it would get way outta hand people would say why every single religion shouldn't be involved. The point is stop complaining that there are sales on steam it just says WINTER SALE remember. now I'm done with my mini rant

I remember. That's why I am against OP's suggestion to have bigger and better sales on Christmas day.

What you said reminded me of the Athiests at my school who say "Happy Solstice" because they are just so anti-religion. Granted, I don't know your stance on religion, it just reminded me of them.

Go look up the American Atheists Times Square ad. It says how we don't need Christ in Christmas, and how Christmas is about family and love. Christmas as we know it has mostly not been religious for a while now, and especially to a corporation that deals with sales worldwide digitally.

My take on religion is that I live in a mostly Orthodox country which celebrates Christmas on the seventh of January, and all things you associate with Christmas (gifts giving, family gathering, feast, fat guy in the chimney etc) are associated with New Year.

The sales weren't bad 2 years ago, now I'd actually want some different games on discount for once.

+1 Steam sales used to be really good. Now, you can usually get better deals from Amazon, GMG, Gamefly, bundles, and other sources. Not to be debbie the downer, but most of the "big" discounts during this sale are on indie games that will likely get bundled.

Not trying to knock Steam, but I feel Steam knows it doesn't have to have the best deals anymore. People often will overpay for something on Steam when it is already cheaper elsewhere, i.e. the Metal Gear Solid preorder.

And if they aren't already in a bundle, it's usually games that have already been at the same discount before. They should try and put some different games on the daily/flash deal that usually don't go more than 50% off during major sales.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree. The worst part about Steam sales now is the lack of variety. It's the same games in daily and flash/community choice sales all year. Bulletstorm in community choice was a huge surprise to me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, too bad I couldn't get that, the flash/community choice deals start pretty early here, so I'm still asleep at the time. Now there's still time for the sales to make a turn for the better, instead of the usual copy/paste deals.

They did try putting different games in the flash sales... EVOCHRON MERCENARY. that game is great, unique, and goes on sale once a year. What happened? Everyone voted for Red Faction, a previously bundled game that is mediocre at best. People are dumb.

I'm hoping for the encore sale to happen again this year. I missed the Dishonored and Bioshock sales because I wont get money till Christmas, so I hope they do the encore sale like last year.

There's no need for encore sale, the games go on sale multiple times, definitely. but don't expect another BSI season pass pricing error...

I hope they go on sale again and they had a lot of problems with DLC prices during this sale so far. Some bundles haven't matched the sale the games are going for (ex. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Bundle) and for some the DLCs are all different prices (might be on purpose though).

Unfortunately, a good majority of them were already under $10.00 to begin with.. Only seen 3 that were over $10.00 that was discounted above 80%.. one was software.

Only reason I can see for them holding a few big titles till that time is to try and steal Amazon's thunder from a pre-published list.

Tomb Raider, Castevania, DuckTales, for me, will see deeper discounts on Amazon than anywhere previously (okay, maybe Nuuvem). Steam may try and mirror them or beat them by a day. Don't know. If they're wise they will. :)

I was surprised by Amazon this year.. they had much better prices then Steam.. and I loved Steam's Christmas/Winter sale last year.

Yup. I bought a lot more from Amazon this year. Pricing was often same/better. Sometimes I went back to Steam since Amazon charges me tax. But I had an unfortunately situation with Steam wallet and the Summer sale (game not showing up, support working at their usual combined sub-90 IQ), so I will continue to use Steam as DRM/interface for convenience, but will buy elsewhere whenever possible.

There won't be any mainly because, as Valve always stated, this in not tied to religion in any way, and there never were sales related to religious events. This is a winter sale, as there is a summer sale. This is not a christmas sale, as neither there is an easter sale or any other.

Eh, What is religious about Christmas?

You give presents... you take presents.. all given by a fat old guy that comes down your chimney. As far as I know. No religion in there...

Although, Now thinking about it.. it does make you want to grab your shotgun and scream home invasion.

They don't want to encourage fat people to sneak down your chimney and steal your wallet to buy steam games with.

Why does it called Christmas? It has religious origins and santa is a man symbolising St. Claus\Nikolai smth like that. A lot of people may not like that, so if you don't want to anger smb, stay away from religion and politics.

I was still seeing some publisher bundles, they just aren't as obvious as they were last year. But if you search for the publisher and bring up a store page for one of their games, if a pack exists with that game in it you'll see it on that page and a bunch of them do have some nice sales on them.

Maybe on valves own IP, but I'm not expecting anything else. The leak from before the black Friday sale, which beyond giving the dates, explained how the system worked on the developer side. Every developer gets a spreadsheet of their games with two columns, holiday price and daily deal price. These special prices were for both sales, so there's probably nothing special planned for Christmas sale-wise. But I'm hoping for some interesting event.

To be honest I'm still blown away with how cheap game prices have gotten. From paying $50 for any SNES title when I was a child. I would have never expected to get an entire collection of games for $10 nowadays. I feel the new generation is gonna get spoiled =P
