Replying to a post that should hopefully get read: You -really- need to add an incentive for those who start give aways. The fact that someone can get the same amount of points for doing nothing as I could for starting loads of giveaways is kinda stupid.
Perhaps for every person who joins their giveaway, add half a point? (And then limit it to 100, maybe?)

Well, I don't know about that. As it stands, the idea is that people giving games away are doing so either out of sheer good-will or because of having a second copy of a game thanks to a bundle. I think those are good things to promote.

Until you realise that for something that cost me 5 pound, there were around 2000 entrants.
About half of them had probably heard of the game previously. People have enough points to enter literally all the contests, rather than the ones they actually want to win. I came back after sleeping and I had 250 points, which I used to gen invites because none of the give aways interest me.

so only way of getting points is by making give aways? you only receive 10% of the value for a "chance" to win a game, i would rather just trade then take a huge gamble.
I would agree if points were replenished over time and if you gained more points per give away like a flat point rate no matter on game cost then a bonus on its cost after.

You receive points when anyone creates a giveaway. If $1,000 worth of giveaways are created today, you can choose $100 worth of giveaways to enter.

Good idea, but definitely needs some more ways of getting points.

Maybe a raffle every so often? Put in maybe, 5P, and winner takes all? They of course would need a limit to the amount of points won.

Yep, you can save your points, and hold off for giveaways you're interested in winning. I'm thinking a cap of 300 for now. That should give people a chance to save a few, without hoarding thousands. At the moment, they can only have one entry per giveaway, and they can't go double.

The cap of 300 is fine as long as it is per day... However, what if someone wants a game and that game appears sparingly over here. Shouldn't he be allowed to save up as many points so that when the game he does want comes on here, he can enter all of the giveaways available? Furthermore, keeping a cap of 300 will cause people to enter giveaways that they don't really want (games that they could do with rather than want) just so that their points are not wasted (since anything gained above the cap is wasted)... this will lower the chance of people who actually want the games to win... would that really be fair? Just food for thought...

This might work okay while there is a lot of giveaways going on, but during times when there is less, will people even have enough points to enter them?
I've also thought that maybe the giveaway sponsor can have an option in the giveaway for how many people are allowed to enter. That way, they can keep it somewhat low/reasonable, or can raise it higher if they want to, like if maybe they were giving multiple copies

At the moment, the gifter receives no extra points for creating a giveaway. Everyone on the site receives 10% of the list price. In the future though, it would be nice to provide them with some type of bonus.

I don't like the idea of a limit of entries per giveaway. That would devolve to me needing to be on this site every half hour, so that as soon as a new giveaway is created I can immediately enter it before it reaches it's limit. That would just be annoying and frustrating.

fair enough. seems like a rather limiting thing at 1 point per dollar... be a bit more fun if the ratio was a bit higher, say 1.5 to 2, but it's prolly more balanced at 1. also, i think it would be a good idea for gifters to get more, say 50% - 100% of their own giveaway value.
Comment has been collapsed.
Gifters should probably get 100% of the value of their games that they post as points. This should will encourage people to host giveaways. Also, maybe people who don't win an entered giveaway could get 10-50% of their points spent on the giveaway back?
Anyways, nice idea!

Basically the best thing we could do is give away huge games like Portal 2 / Brink / ...
That way we would generate us a lot of points and all of the others will spend their points on this games :D

I love the idea, it would also be nice if someone enters to win a game multiple times (from different giveaways) the entry is removed from all the other ones they entered if they win one, and be able to check their steam account if they already own the game so they can't enter. Not sure if this already happens so correct me if I'm wrong.

There may be a flaw in this already. I haven't tried it by removing myself from a giveaway I've entered, but on the pages of the ones I entered, it seems like it may refund your points. While this is a good idea, I was thinking it could be exploited by the people who entered a huge number of giveaways before the system was implemented. They could remove themselves from a bunch of the giveaways and start off with a lot of points.

Some giveaways contain more than one copy. Those giveaways should technically have the number of points x number of copies given away. For example, if a giveaway has 10 copies and the value of the game is $10, technically there is a total of $100 dollars of value, so that giveaway should be 100 points and not 10. Otherwise, the system would not be fair, since although everyone still has the chance to win one game, the probability of winning is increased in giveaways with multiple copies. For example, a giveaway for 10 copies of portal with 100 entrants, everyone has 1/100*10=10% chance of winning whereas if there were one copy it would be 1%. So since the number of copies affects the probability of winning, it should also reflect this on the points.

I disagree. I think the entry points should always match the value, in USD, of the game you have a chance to receive - any member can only receive one copy of the game from the multiple-copy giveaways. The increased probability of winning will likely be counteracted with more entrants.

This would be true, but actually it doesn't work like that! You are removed from the pool as soon as you win a game! So when there are 10 games in one giveaway with 100 entrants, first time they have a chance of 1% of winning(1/100), then a chance of 1.01010101... (1/99), etc... which gives us a total chance of ~14.7%.
Although yeah, the authors should get 100% of the value they give away.

Another thing to think of:
Currently you can get as many Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic (Multiplayer) keys, as you like, for totally free (Price taken by sg from the steam-store is 9,99$). All those can and have been offered here, so it is possible to generate points out of nowhere!

looks like tidalis and eets are also free, looking at the ammounts of ppl trying to trade it for w/e or gifting tons of them away. I would say, ban key giveaways in general and make it only gifts from either Steam, humble bundle, D2D or whatever site let's u gift games activatable on Steam.

remove the whole giftee gets the e-mail adress, let ppl send an e-mail to the user that won through steamgifts.com. Then give the user an option report the giftee, incase a key gets send.
That way the e-mail adress doesn't have to be public anymore aswell.

I truly like this idea. I'm pretty much a poor college kid, but I also don't want to be the jerk who enters a million giveaways hoping for free stuff. This lets me pick specifically the games I've been wanting the most and hope to win. My only worry would be how quickly people will gain points. Once a person runs out of points, whether they have won something or not, and then the next game deal comes out and it is something they have been waiting a long time for, will they gain enough points to enter even one, let alone them all. That said, I would have to agree that I think Gifters should get 50% of the value of the game in points. They are giving away a game, typically in generosity, and deserve a little credit for that.

Edit: This information is no longer correct, we have lowered the generation to five percent.
EDIT: Point System Now Live
If you check the top right, there's a number in brackets next to Logout, which represents your current points. At the moment, I sent everyone 100, and new users will start with 25. Now, how it works.
When a giveaway is created on the site, every single member gets 10% of that value in points. So, if I started a giveaway at this moment, for a $50 Steam game, everyone would now have an extra 5 points. When you enter a giveaway, you spend these points. If you enter for a game worth $20, you spend 20 points, and you'll see the number next to Logout drop by 20. If you decide to remove your entry while the giveaway is still open, those 20 points are returned. And of course, if you don't have the required number of points, you're unable to enter that giveaway.
At most, you can save up to 300 points. This way, people can't be inactive for months, and then return to thousands of points, entering everything.
Numbers are rounded up, so if someone creates a giveaway for a $1 game, 1/10 = 0.1 points, but that's rounded to 1, so it helps to contribute to everyone.
What do you guys think? Suggestions? I thought we'd try it out for a few days, and see how things are going. In short, this will allow people to choose which 10% of giveaways they would like to enter, giving them better odds for games they're interested in playing.
