2D can't die because some games need to be 2D. Besides, they have a certain charm and addictiveness, like flash games.

the videogame market is extremely volatile , look at "3D" games . your uncles right the demands there. however look at some indie games like minecraft (although not 2D an indie game) and how it has sold milions. I believe if you have a unique idea that catches on and goes viral despite 3D, 2D, large company or indie there is potential.

2D games will never die. Video games as a whole will die first. at that point, there would be no need for 2D/2.5D/3D/4D. games.

As others have said, 2D will NEVER DIE because it's easier to design games in 2D with less resources than 3D... so it'll always be an stepping stone for new developers & indie publishers.
Granted 3D visuals have become the norm for all major release titles (with a few occasional exceptions) & all the major developers & publishers will push for it unless they're going for a specialized look (like a 8-bit retro, which was done for Mega Man 9 & 10) which is generally 2D or 2.5D.
It's all in the matter on how the graphics relate to the overall game.

Well, even a lot of 2d games (in terms of gameplay and art style) are actually rendered with 3d engines now.
Look at the gameplay trailers for Guilty Gear Xrd for a good example - that is Unreal Engine 3. So on the tech level 2d may be dying. But in terms of overall game design it will stick around for a long time still I think.

It's not that hard to match visually, it's just that people still to dismiss cel-shaded graphics. But yeah, it's unlikely 2D will ever die.

You will never see a 3D game with 2D style graphics unless they used 2D images within it. Cel Shaded graphics at the moment have never properly imitated 2D graphics and if it will ever happen, it will prove to be very difficult and a waste of time to do so.

Haha, no, never, unless making passable 3D graphics and animations will become so easy as to surpass the convenience of 2D, but quite frankly, I can't see that happening.
Plus even nowadays, animators and 3D artists are struggling to be able to render 2D works in an animated 3D form: regardless of practicality, cost et cetera, 2D, when well done, maintains a charm 3D cannot obtain.

Why should they? They might all become 2.5D games, but the 2D gameplay has its specific mechanics, and because they are different from 3D's, you'll always need them. To the point that some games have toyed around with them, like Mario Paper and Fez. :)

Like everyone else said, 2D will obvious never die. Regardless of how much 3D graphics advance, not all game need them. Regardless of what some people try to claim, graphics are not everything... ok, actually, in retrospect very few people try to claim that. XD
I can be wrong, but maybe your uncle has one thing right, even if he didn't deliver it quite correctly. While I'm not much of an artist, I'm pretty sure that if you are to study 3D modeling you'd have to first study 2D. You can't go directly to 3D in the same sense that you can't draw a cube without drawing lines and squares first. And, well, knowing more is always useful. (Of course I can be completely wrong about that, in which case ignore the entire second paragraph of this post. :P )

There's no reason it would, they might go out of fashion, but they could always return. Don't view 2D as a visual handicap, 2D is a style, and as long as people like the style, it will stay.

I like both, depends on the game... I didn't like Terraria because it's 2D and I just don't feel like I'm in that world... but I do like Space Pirates and Zombies, Plants vs Zombies, Beat Hazard which are all 2D games and are great games... so yeah, depends on the gameplay mainly.

2D will never die. Games have different (art)styles, so it might not be suited for every type of game, but it surely will be used for some. Or in combination with 3D elements.
I remember that for some time in the 90's some thought that the future of gaming was in in live action (using filmed segments and real actors, not motion capture) fused into games. Roberta Williams made use of it in several of her games. Obviously the idea of using footage of real actors and overall real-time footage was not the next step at all. But 2D games are still made and being sold.
So regardless of how the industry develops, if the game is solid and 2D fits well with the gameplay, there will always be a market for them. But it would still do no harm looking into 3D as well.

Live Action was basically just the industry abusing the CD-ROM, becuase of the x500 space available.

Well, first, i'm 14 years old, and i love playing videogames, i like most genres but mainly i love Indie and 2D games.
Yesterday, i was talking with my uncle and i told him that when i grow up i want to study programming, and because i love drawing cartoon-style, i would like to be a developer and make my own indie games in a 2D style because i love that kind of games and it's my dream, since i was a kid, i dream that someday i can create a game similar to Megaman X, because it's one of my favorite games.
But he said that it's better doing 3D games and i would need to study 3D modeling, because looking to the marketing side, technology is advancing and everyone would prefer 3D games than 2D games at the future.
As i said before, i like any genre of videogames, but i seriously have a personal love to the 2D ones and Indies, and i felt a little bad, but now i just want to post it here to see your opinions.
