I tried that way, but now I just let them into alphabetical order.
It's prettier with Steam's grid view, which ignores categories anyway...

Nah. I don't think I need to organise my steam games. I don't think I can even be called hoarder.

I tried to do so once, but after few hundreds games with tens upon tens of examples of "what category should I put this into" it became harder to find anything than with alphabethical view.
nowadays I'm using priorities categories. Finished, Currently Playing, High Priority, Low Priority, Junk. Each game I finished or played a bit but decided I won't come back to it goes to Finished. Games I'm playing right now are always on top of my lib (as category starts with C ;p), High Priority are games that I plan to play soon, Low Priority are games I want to play someday, but not sure when, and Junk are all games I'm not really intrested in. I'm keepieng my Junk and Low Priority categories minimized, this way my lib is usable even with 1100+ entries ;p

I might try your method, but favorite my currently playing and then categorize my high and low priority games. My genres was a waste of time.
For you, Id suggest another category of something like "tried and failed" for games that you played, but abandoned and will never bother with again.

no need for that - such a games end up in Junk category ;p because does it really matter if I will never instal game, because it's just shovelware I got for free or as extra in a bundle or if I tried it and decided I will never try it again? In the end all that matters is that I don't want to bother myself with any of these games, so they may as well all go to Junk folder ;p

I'm thinking about same thing with one more category: "recently obtained, want to try"
But it's OK to keep it untidy.

My collection isn't as big as yours and i probally can't be called hoarder and even if i can then i'd be "starting noob-hoarder". I just made categories like "fps", "multiplayer", separate groups for games from bundles and group called "bin" that i'm probally not going to launch.

Seems that would be a good idea for valve that you have a view by categories or tags that developers assigned to the game. And of course games with more than one appear on all them.
I start to have that problem and I'm considering to categorize them all, but at the moment I only have some categories not related to style: co-op hotseat | pending demos | other (nongames) | Prototypes | Rests (games I'm certainly sure I won't play again or never intended to have them [those attached bundles...]) | Only multiplayer | games.

I've used steam for 7 years now (had to make a new account which is why this one's only 3 yrs old) and literally just found out you can categorize games 3 days ago.

thats how I do mine Usually if something is missing I put it in the next closest thing until I have a substantial amount for that categories
EDIT: Fixed.

I've tried organizing like you've done. Then I tried alphabetical and now I'm categorizing my games with multiplayer in mind. Local Multiplayer, Online MP and Singleplayer as the main categories. Helps when trying to find games to play with friends. Also I've picked some really, really odd games into their own "Extraordinaries" category.
The tags and store categories should be implemented somehow to our libraries. Would help a lot.

100% (games I have definitely finished), TO DO (games I want to play or complete in the future), IN THEATERS (the three games I currently play), TRASH (Left 4 Dead 2 Beta, Half-Life 2: Lost Cost + Deathmatch and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero + Deleted Scenes), NOT PROJECTED (games from bundles I don't want to play) and TIMELESS (multiplayer and plotless games).

I'm not a hoarder. I prefer the term: hamster. :)
And I categorize mostly by the type (adventure, multiplayer, sandbox), but I have multiple categories for games I finished, in progress, waiting, suspended, trash and I have several categories for game series, like Crysis, Saints Row, GTA, Half-Life, Fallout, Bioshock, etc. And I also have some category by publishers, like Pendulo Studios és Telltale Games.

Two Categories:
Playing or Will Play
Will Never Play or Will Never Play Again

That's about it. I tend to remember all my games pretty well.

i changed my categorizing algorithm some times before getting to the final version:
preferred category: all the games i have a real interest in (between 50 and 100)
all the rest.

As my collection increases I have created several categories for my games so I can find them quickly. But sometimes I have trouble deciding what game belongs in which category. And some games could be in two or three categories. So I'm asking you all that have tons of games what kind of categories do you have for your collection?
Here are my current categories:
Controller (for games that can use a controller)
FPS (first person shooter)
Meh (games I don't like)
Misc (games I haven't categorized yet or can't decide)
Platformer
Puzzle
Racing
Rogue-Like
RPG
Space (anything space including shmups and 4x)
Tower Defense
Turn-Based Strategy
The big problem I have is with Platformer and Puzzle. Especially platfomers, because there are traditional platformers like old-school Sonic, Mega Man, etc., but then there are also puzzle platformers that often take place in just one room and are not side-scrolling, such as Escape Goat.
And with the Puzzle category there are casual puzzle games like Bejeweled and Angry Birds but then there are ones that have a story to them like Puzzle Quest.
What do you guys do?
