Well, some people comes here to win give-away(s) then send them to his/her friends as gifts. I saw it happening.
Not everyone is a scammer, as eventually the give-away has a purpose, because someone gets it who really needs it. But it is true that some people just ninja games and then sell it or trade it, fooling others with them.

Yes but giving away the won game is against the site rules...

"Don't trade, sell, resubmit, or give away games you win.
Winnings must be redeemed on the winning account."
"Can I win a game for someone else I know?
Members may only enter for their own account for games they do not already own."
Comment has been collapsed.
Think about it this way: the rules are there to make it fair for everyone - we all have one "ticket" each. If someone wants a game and they ask all their friends who don't want the game to enter for them and then give them the game, they will have more than one ticket and therefore a greater chance to win. Of course, not all situations are like this, but there is no way to know. The simple solution is to just get the friend to enter instead.

The FAQ already states you have to add it as soon as you get it("The submitter and winner(s) of the giveaway have seven (7) days to complete the gifting process. This includes the activation of the gift on the Steam account of the winner."). I don't see any point in this thread. Users that don't follow that rule can be reported in the Support section

Multiple people adding giveaway wins to their inventory. Read the damn topic.
Comment has been collapsed.
That sounds like a steam problem, not a steamgifts issue.
Comment has been collapsed.
How is it a steam problem if the winner adds it to his inventory? You get the choice when you are gifted a game to add it to your library or your inventory.
Comment has been collapsed.
Because steam gave them the option to do so, you should ask this on the steam forums instead and ask why a gifted game is allowed to be put in a persons inventory. Steamgifts can't do anything about this.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes we can. By disallowing people to add it to their inventory when they accept the gift.
Does not stop them, but gives a reason to ban them faster.
Comment has been collapsed.
This is a Steamgifts issue. I don't see what's wrong with Steam allowing a gifted game to be placed in a person's inventory. If a friend gave me Dino D-Day, for instance, and I didn't really want the game, but thought it was rude to simply reject the gift, I could give it to someone else who really wanted the game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Found them. That was simple. You need to make your description more vague.

Meh.... its not my intent to call people out, but without a point, its hard to make a suggestion.

Before a game goes into my library, shouldn't it go through a mandatory purgatory period where it will meditate on the sins it commited before entering my account? Only after such cleansing shall it be deemed acceptable for it to enter the holy library where I will make it the immense honor of playing it. (The pretty picture seemed like a good argument too.)
Comment has been collapsed.
I would say as soon as possible. Sometimes people aren't on for maybe a while but there is no excuse once they do get back. As a contributor I haven't had this issue with many people mostly because I make puzzles and I know many of the people who solve them because they frequent the puzzle community. However, I feel for you.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea I agree that people who don't activate the game should be banned, but the 7 day waiting period is worth it. What happens if the winner is on holiday for example? Bit harsh to win and then be banned cos you didn't take the gift or loose your win to a re-roll.
Comment has been collapsed.
"Don't worry about it, we're going to code up a script to automatically find every single user without their received gifts activated on their account. Trust me, they'll be reviewed, and all banned, along with the user creating the gift."
Well, last part was about the users boosting their accounts via few entries giveaways, but in all this will help too.
Comment has been collapsed.
uh so the gifter is going to be banned as well? why is that? because they didnt report the person? they probably weren't even aware of that rule. -_-
Comment has been collapsed.
From reading the other thread, theusers will be flagged for review by the admin. If you have created a public giveaway and didn't notice that the winner didn't activate the game on their account they're not gonna ban you for that. They will target people making fake private giveaway with just a couple of friends entering to boost their number. It should be pretty easy to make the difference.

New exploit; buying/activating games -> not syncing before entering -> syncing after winning
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup, that will help.
We need a cg tracker though :D. lols
Comment has been collapsed.
That is a pretty good idea. After syncing, the user gets a message "You have gifts marked as received that do not exist in your account. You cannot enter giveaways until this is resolved. If you think this is a mistake or there are special circumstances, contact support."
Comment has been collapsed.
The script that CG is making will flag people for review, helping him find people who cheats the system by making fake private giveaways. This however would definitely put a lock down on the traders.
Comment has been collapsed.
Private Profiles should be handled the same way. Set your profile to public or get off the site. Period.
Comment has been collapsed.
But nobody reads the rules or FAQ, I didn't. Innocent people are going to be banned, this is digital genocide!
Comment has been collapsed.
The new system will flag both private and public profiles. As Hollow quoted cg, even if someone with a private profiles doesn't activate a gift, we'll know, as you cannot continue using our site without switching to a public profile to sync 7 days after your last sync.

I shall write it in german the next time. Then it will be free from such tiny mistakes :).

Whenever someone wins my giveaway, i immediately tell them to redeem it right away. I really don't see any point in keeping your won game in inventory
Comment has been collapsed.
No its not. You can do that automatically by checking the users games via the xml interface from steam.
Comment has been collapsed.
This could work though, after marking a game as received, the user could be forced to synch again before entering any more giveaways. Altough there sould be a grace period (48 hours maybe?) because the synch can fail for a number of reasons and we don't want to lock people out because of technical problems.
Comment has been collapsed.
We can't set our profile to private to enter steamgifts, I guess the same rule could be applied to our inventories, and steamgifts could check them too to let people enter in giveaways.
Sometimes I buy games, but I don't add them to my library immediately. I have a normal life full of stuff that sometimes don't allow me to download and play games everyday. I want to have the option to let a game in my inventory if I want it.
Comment has been collapsed.
There is no excuse because it is not a sin.
I still think our inventories could be checked too, or at least, steamgifts does not allow people who already won some game enter in another giveaway of the same game.
Comment has been collapsed.
This could pretty much be abused to be able to trade them after all.
Why would you keep it in your inventory if it's supposed to go into your library eventually anyways?
Only reason I'd do it with games I buy, for example, is if good trade opportunities came by regarding a game I'm holding in my inv for the time being.

I recently won the Binding of Isaac DLC: Wrath of the Lamb. I'm storing it in my inventory until I feel I have played the base game enough to the point where I want to activate the DLC. I have only beat Mom once and that was recent.
Would you still enforce the rule onto this situation?
Comment has been collapsed.
There could be exclusion in the database for those cases. Altough a lot of DLC actually appears on the list. At least it would bring down the number of people winning game for the purpose of trading them away.
Comment has been collapsed.
I admit, I have given all 3 giveaways I've won to friends. I didn't read the rules, my bad.
Will I get banned? :/
Why didn't i redeem to myself? Because I had like 300 points which I needed to use, so I joined every giveaway possible. I thought my friends could want those games I won more than I would, so I regifted them :3
(I DIDN'T MAKE PROFIT AT ALL BY REGIFTING)
Comment has been collapsed.
You might, who knows. You're only allowed to enter for yourself, everyone gets their own SG account like everyone gets their own Steam account.
Comment has been collapsed.
You'll probs get a temp ban for admitting, though the admins might have the feeling they need to crack down on each case and go full byebye on you.
Comment has been collapsed.
i have had 300 points for many days and i don't feel the desire to enter lots of giveaways for the simple fact that i'm not a greedy inconsiderate person. I assume that the people entering the giveaways WANT TO PLAY THE GAME, so i don't enter for a game i don't want to play. I have a bf who i could trade gifts to if i won, but i do not nor would i. He enters for himself and i enter for myself. Angers me to see people win games and then not play them just because they felt the need to bid on everything like an OCD steam game hoarder.

It was stupid of Valve to give the option "Put in my inventory" on god damn gifts.
Comment has been collapsed.
Don't think Valve has Steamgifts in mind when it decided that...lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
It always was accept or decline the gift until the introduction of inventories. Valve decided that you can.
Comment has been collapsed.
No, this website was created by a steam user called cg.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I didn't know it was part of the rules... I always kept the game in my inventory because I have a ton of other games to play, and if I don't find the time to play it and my friend really wants to play it, I will just give it to them free of charge.
Though I don't really mind putting it in my library either, just didn't know it was such a big problem o_o''...
Comment has been collapsed.
...you aren't allowed to give away the games you win here.
Comment has been collapsed.
+1
Never give away games you win...why even enter them? Ugh...
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I understand both sides of the story:
You aren't giving the game away because you're entering it for your friend, you do it for yourself and you eventually think "well I don't want this game but my friend does" You aren't really doing it for your own benefit.
I also understand that it is rude to give away a free gift and it was taken away from people who may have actually WANTED to play it.
I know it baffles some of you to why people would do that, but people have a change of thought. I don't think we should outright ban people who don't add games to their inventory, but we could stop them from entering giveaways until they do. Banning for just adding to your inventory seems... harsh.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you decide you don't want the game anymore gift it back to the creator with a note saying something like "Thank you very much but I decided I didn't want this". Then at least he can put it back up here for someone else to win....then you dont need to worry about being banned for breaking a rule(At least I think).
Thing is giving or trading away a win is against the rules here I believe.
Comment has been collapsed.
Better then trading it off or selling it...Not sure if its against the rules, maybe someone else here knows...
Comment has been collapsed.
It'd have to be passed by the admins, I reckon, through support.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah I would assume they would just let him redo the giveaway if anything.
Best to only enter giveaways you want though and avoid all of this.
Comment has been collapsed.
What? Are you suggesting Western Democracy will collapse because a privately-owned-and-run website has rules governing its use? Or are you suggesting that steamgifts is, or ever has been, a democracy? Either way you're 100% wrong.
Also, well done on picking up some Magicka DLC for 33c so you can enter contributor giveaways and managing somehow to have an entry:comment ratio of over 7:1.

Due to recent events, I think a Winner should be obligated to add the Game to his library immediatly, once he accepts it, without the 7 days period. No harm in waiting 7 days before accepting it, but once you do, it should not be allowed to add it to your inventory.
I know, 1 bad Apple does not make the Tree bad, but still. I think this way we can faster sort out the scammers. Someone who won a giveaway won 2 Games the last 2 weeks and still did not add them to his library but his inventory. After I asked him to add it, he set his inventory to private. And he is also in some kind of trading group. Speaks books by itself. Please don't jump into conclusions by searching my last created giveaways, you would not know who it is anyway and I am not telling.
But I think this small rulechange might help in sorting the bad guys out.
edit:
Another good change could be to parse the UserXML once a Gift has been marked as received. If the game is not there, the account should not be able to enter any more giveaway until this is resolved.
