Nice helpful post.... But I also almost loath it because it kind of ruins a puzzle aspect... Sure theres other puzzle aspects, but those number ones where always good easy starts if you knew how to do them, but otherwise were quite tricky...

See problem with your puzzles is that you are not playing the encodings straight, which is good because it would otherwise be too easy, but the obfuscating steps you're adding are there completely without hint so it's a total guessing game to get into your head and figure out what did you do. Which is somewhat fair, because normally in cryptoanalysis the other side doesn't give you hints and it's the point of cryptography to make shit hard to decode. But yeah, exactly, this makes it really hard and I sometimes think you do not realize how hard. You've seen my puzzle, I haven't actually done anything too weird and I actually hinted every step, sometimes in rather limited way, but still -- and you didn't solve that :P
EDIT: That being said, I'm not really suggesting you should change anything, just don't be so surprised if you are not getting as many solvers as soon as you'd think you get them =]

I agree with you. Everyone should know this and playing these encodings straight is a moot point imho. There are many ways to screw with these encodings not to be so straight, sometimes very simple things, so that's a possibility. But doing so without hinting what has been done can be too harsh on the solvers. With my first puzzle I totally played with this idea and doubt I'll ever use this again, doesn't feel original to me anymore and prefer to explore other areas :)

Wormy and Award were the only ones who solved that one. You'can' still solve it if you want to. Bruto got close to solving it but ran out of time. BiskutMentega/RotiKering solved it after it was closed. The reward was totally worth it but remained unclaimed.
