Keep it that way, they love to show off with big numbers yet 99% of the users are forced to use it.

This should explain why i got an email from Steam containing a Steam Guard code a few hours ago

ORIGIN dude, not STEAM

I use the same password and nickname for both and it isn't unlikely that an Origin user also uses Steam, so i guess they just tried it, "dude"

except that information was never abused since it's encrypted and they can't do anything with it. so 'worse' is subjective, since here they actually lock you out

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They always could decrypt it, if they would. The Problem of the whole thing between those plateforms were the passwords. Let's just say Origin had the same situation like Steam.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Decrypt my ass, even they use supercomputers or GPU to decrypt those, it still a great amount of effort(years) to decrypt one account.

Not as much effort as you'd think
If you have access to hash, salt and encryption method you can brute force especially weaker passwords in a few minutes/hours

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This. If you know the encryption method and somehow find the salt. Bingo- passwords/cc info. FORTUNATELY Steam had it resolved before it was an issue.

Lol. I'm using different passwords for like 8 accounts. And then use a replicate password for sites I don't care about/don't buy things on/never visit.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's the safest way nowadays.

Generic password for everything without sensitive data or monetary connections. Different passwords for everything else and a ridiculous password on your e-mail. If they get your e-mail, resetting passwords is kinda easy.

Yup, my email password is a combination of two long number combinations with upper and lowercase lettering and punctuation. My friends are like "woah" when they see me type it in. XD

I just went to make sure I was. Turns out I have an "old" version of their account from playing Battlefield Heroes when it was in beta with one of my buddies. So I upgraded to the new junk since it was sitting there anyways and wanted to make sure the password was a throwaway, and my info was safe.

Same here, fortunatelly their idiotic copy-paste support didn't waste my time and insta deleted the account.
Life's much better now.

Next time someone asks me why i don't use origin i'll beat the fuck out of him.

I think you meant to say "I'm glad I'm a Steam fanboy" which itself would be kinda funny. I'm sure you aware of this, but Steam was hacked last year.

"We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information"

Source

Hopefully you don't have a PSN or Battle.net account as well!

(P.S. If you fail to grasp that the person I quoted is being hypocritical as the site we're on requires you to have Steam which was actually hacked with confirmation from the owner, then please do not reply especially a special someone as I've done you a favour by removing all of your nonsense)

Now if we take a moment to think about this logically.

If it is true that Origin was hacked and that is why accounts are being accessed then that means a few things. Either all the passwords were not salted and hashed or the database was accessed quite some time ago and they've taken some time to crack them. The first situation is a huge mistake by EA and the other is unlikely as the monetary gains from the time invested wouldn't be worth it. I also don't believe Origin would hide the fact they were hacked as Sony was hit with a class action lawsuit despite it being dismissed.

I believe there is most likely a flaw somewhere whether it be in the password retrieval or the logging in process. With all of the promotions and freebies at Origin over the past few weeks I wouldn't be surprised if they were even all phished as the majority of the claims seem to be isolated to NeoGaf.

I have never say Im the Steam Fanboy. I have never heard about hacking Steam, though. I would have PSN if I have PS3 and I have Battle.net account.
