I love videogame soundtracks. I even listened to some soundtracks from games I never played (like the Shenmue OST, for example).
With the purchase of some bundles I obtained a few soundtracks from those games. But I did not play most of those games yet.

My question is, WHEN do you think should I listen these OSTs?
Before playing the game, after complete the game, after I played the game some time but not completed it yet...

I will also post here the name of all the OSTs I acquired via bundles, just to have a complete organized list for myself.

  • Beat Hazard Ultra

  • Canabalt
  • Cave Story+

I always listen to soundtracks after I beat the game, or don't intend to finish it. It sounds dumb, but somehow knowing the music before playing it spoils it for me >.<

I personally disagree, I think recognizing the music while you're playing through a game can add considerable enjoyment to the game itself. I feel like it helps connect you with the game on another level.

Buy a music-based game like Audiosurf or Symphony, listen to them then. :P

That's an amazing idea! The only rhythm games I own by now are Sequence and Bit Trip, though. But I'll take that into consideration.

BIT.TRIP VOID and CORE have some amazing soundtracks, defo getting them someday, bundle or not.

From your list definitely listen to the following: Canabalt, Swords & Sworcery, BIT.TRIP RUNNER and for completion's sake maybe Indie Game: The Movie too (seeing as it's done by Jim Guthrie, and some of Swords & Sworcery's songs are in there too). For me the best soundtracks were these 4 from various bundles though:

  • Swords & Sworcery - not a big fan of Mr. Guthrie, but crap, this was pretty amazing.
  • EDGE - surprisingly, it made its way onto my MP3 player (poor man's iPod, if you will)
  • Messiah (GOG's Interplay promo) - gives you a Fear Factory album. Go for it.
  • Descent 1+2 (Interplay promo again) - soundtrack has Skinny Puppy, no reason not to go for it.

I listened a lot to Painkiller's soundtrack before playing the game itself like, 2 years I think, so you're not alone with that. If you want you can go for these soundtracks too: Carmageddon + TDR 2000 (has Fear Factory again, TDR has Plague which is decent), Quake (Nine Inch Nails, a must get), Hitman 1-4 (love Jesper Kyd), Freedom Fighters (Jesper Kyd again), HalfQuake: Amen (OST written and performed by the creators of the mod; completely authentic, and pretty good if you don't take the singing into account. Also free), Fallout 2 (or just get Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works: Volume 2 as it's a complete ripoff of it), and for non-authentic music, the GTA and Need For Speed series hosted a plethora of amazing songs, even The Run had this adrenaline-pumping masterpiece from the nineties.

And on the topic of bundle music, I'll never forgive Humble for not including any kind of soundtrack for Braid.

I agree about the GTA saga, I met some great groups just playing the game.
Thank you for your recomendations, it seems I have so work to do, lol.
About the last line of your post, I didn't know that. In the most recent HIB they included Binding of Isaac + its DLC but not its OST. I hope they will include it next week with the extra games!

I love Limbo's and Hotline Miami's soundtrack. I'd recommend listening to the OST's after finishing the game.

The Hotline Miami soundtrack is good, but for me the music turns kinda annoying after playing the same level a thousand times because you get killed again and again.

With Canabalt it doesn't really matter.
With the rest I ALWAYS play the game first.

Why is Canabalt special?

Because it's a 1 level flash game. Two songs, menu and in-game.

World of Goo...sort of... when I hear certain tracks they remind me of frustrating levels...

On a side note, if any game's soundtrack should've been included with HIB7, it should've been Binding of Isaac's. That is some amazing work in there.

On a more relevant note, listen to the Binding of Isaac soundtrack.

Listen to them after playing the game. Except for Shatter. Listen to that one NOW.
