So I noticed today while searching for closed threads that the threshold for closing a thread has gone from 5 months to 1 month without reply. Open threads used to go to about page 340 or so, now it's down to page 26. Anyone know the reason for this change?

Maybe support now closes them? I noticed that, also... I miss the "Steam is down" PSA thread. :(

I've never seen this thread and don't know what's it about, but you can see if steam is up/down here: http://www.issteamdown.com/

Do we really need old threads to be open for 5 months without a reply? I think one month without activity is plenty.

I found it very useful... for reasons... of a puzzle nature...

Ah. I suck at forum puzzles, so I hadn't thought about that.

At least Bobo was able to fix it for me. Ticket was answered in half an hour.

Ah, yeah, that's SteamTrades and that's quite different. There's always been a one-month timeout there.

When I saw your reply, I was going to mention that you should be able to get it reopened, but its already been done, so I'll just sit here and kick some rocks instead...

Not aware of any changes, but pretty sure it was always supposed to be one month, and then it was broken for quite some time.

Threads being auto-closed is only active on ST. It has been disabled here since quite a while ago.

With that said, if any thread was closed due to inactivity and you need it reopened, let us know via a ticket (or here).

Reopened the Steam is DOWN one, since I like it being bumped instead of new ones popping up.

Reopen plz

I was used to not bumping it for months. Was sad when it got closed because the system got fixed. ;_;

I have noticed this as well when trying to find recently closed threads, when I saw the page count of opened threads decrease drastically.

Oh, somebody noticed.

Unfortunately, you posted this while I was out of town dealing with family matters.

The fact of the matter is that the automatic thread timeout was turned off a long time ago. I don't know why. I speculated that it was because tickets were on the same system as forum posts and it was to prevent those that went overlooked for too long from being closed by accident, but that could be totally wrong.

Consequently, I have become the automatic thread timeout. Every few months when I'm around, I close up all the old threads.

However, since I recently returned from a hiatus of several months, there was quite a backlog of old threads. There were threads open that had not been posted in for over a year, and they stretched back 374 pages.

So I spent about a month cleaning up the forum. After I finished, there was nothing that hadn't been posted in for more than four weeks open, and open threads only occupied about 23 pages or so. Altogether, I closed over 17,500 threads this time.

Including prior bouts of cleaning, this brings the total number of threads I've closed up over 27,500. There's about a 1 in 3 chance that any thread chosen at random was closed by me at the time of this posting.

If you ever want a thread re-opened, it's not a big deal and we're happy to help as long as the thread wasn't closed for a specific reason, so feel free to ask.
