People say lag when they more often mean FPS drop, that is, when a computer is unable to render something, it will drop frames to try and keep up.
Of course, people could also mean input lag, where you get this disjointed, sluggish movement. As in, you press jump, and the character jumps seconds later.
I am still forever boggled at how I can run Stalker with mods well yet be unable to run GTA4 on Medium. That, and GFWL sucks ass.

I ran it on high pretty well with a Q6600 and Gtx 460, wonderful game.

Yeah but when talking to people its easier to just say lag, at least from what I have encountered

Maybe I'm just overly frustrated without a good reason. I've been grading papers all weekend and have about 120 left (end of semester portfolios.)
You have a good point though: the best time to ignore the "proper" meanings of terms is when the popular use outweighs the "correct" definition.

I understand, when under stress the littlest thing can be extremely annoying. I tend to get aggravated with it also but when you are saying "the fps is low" or "this gams stuttering" and your friends are like "huh, what?" then I resort to saying "I mean its lagging".
I got tired of that conversation so I just say lag now haha :-D.

Lag is a common word meaning to fail to keep up or to fall behind.[1] In real-time applications, the term is used when the application fails to respond in a timely fashion to inputs.[2][3] The most common use regards online gaming when the game doesn't respond in sync with the player's controls, usually due to a slow internet connection, server latency or overworked hardware.
Lag is also often used in reference to video games to describe the delay (or latency) between an action by a player and the reaction of the game.[4]

People thinking that MSAA is the be all and end all of computer game GRAFXX, and claiming any other form of anti-aliasing is "fake". Here's an example:
"I just want to know one thing:
Does the game support MSAA?
Lately some games have decided to use โfakeโ anti-aliasing exclusively and I am hoping Dishonored isnโt one of them."
Luckily, some guy with actual knowledge of the subject went to some length to explain the technical details, making it clear that the OP was a clueless oaf.

Look at the front page forum threads. 80% of them annoy the shit out of me for varying reasons. I think I need to grab my manure shovel from the graveyard of dead threads and do some cleaning again.

I might seem angrier, but this is just me. I just haven't posted much lately, so my annoyance at people is more obvious by its absence. Can't speak for the other staff members, but the only people I'm angry about are the ref linkers on the group page. I've started giving three week suspensions for a first offence.

No worries, I was like WTF where did it go!
Luckily I copied it,
I'll give you my answer which hopefully is similar to Jade's (and because I'm bored as fuck right now).
Pointless question threads - Someone asks a question that he could find the answer to in about 5 seconds on google. So much of this from me.
Spam threads - People make a thread saying something stupid like, "hai, did you know the sky is blue" GTFO.
Ref threads - People WRITE IN CAPS LIKE THIS, STEAM DEAL 99% OFF SKYRIMZ, JUST FOLLOW THIS LINK HERE. Which doesn't actually contain an annoying meme but is a simple trick into helping out some random guy get free credit.
Duplicate threads - So many of these, where people don't know how to use the search bar and think they have something juicy to share with the forum that will make them famous. Of course someone beat them to it ages ago so they end up with a completely pointless thread. 100% certified SPAM.
I would also mention group threads, but they don't actually create spam. Everyone wants to win games so they get people posting (even if they are pathetic begging magnets).

Console Wars - it isnt a real for gods sake, its not like there people out on the front lines taking bullets and losing mates. I find it really annoying and disturbing when people call it a war. I cant think of anything to replace with and also feel free to call me a political correctness nazi but that is my opinion

Anyone who takes the "console war" seriously is quite sad. The word "war" is just used to exaggerate the rivalry between the big companies. At the end of the day it's just a word and plenty of video games use it lightly, so there's nothing to get upset about :)

Hitler was a brilliant military leader...
This comment always annoys me to hell and back and I always feel like I need to respond; normally it's filled with naughty words.

As far as I know he avoided to fight USA as long as he could. Anyway Russian campaign alone was too hard a bite for Germany in that very moment. I call it a strategically wrong decision.
Instead I would call Hitler a brilliant social leader, well... , a brilliant dictator.

Afaik, he didn't declare war on the USA... He split his army between the East (Russian front) and Western front (Allied forces)... Then afaik, Japan who was allied to German started the Pacific war by bombing Pearl Harbour and the Allies then asked USA to give them a hand...?
I'm happy to be proved / shown otherwise though.
On a related note... WW2 as a bar-fight.
Or in comic strip form.

Why do you feel the need to insult a person who called Hitler a moron? instead of proving me wrong with you know facts.
Don't answer I really don't want to read another Hitler love letter. I prefer to let his well documented blunders speak for his leadership abilities.

To be fair, while Hitler was horrible, A) had he won we'd all love him and think he's great and B) he almost won a 3 v like 15, along with pulling an economy out of failure and winning countless elections and making great plans to stay in power.

The world in general. History is written by the winners, not the losers. We'd be all "Oh Hitler you so great" instead of "Dayum dat Hitler hella killin all dem peeps"

I hate Hitler. I, like many others, would spend my first time machine trip going back in history and killing him if I could. That has nothing to do with military prowess. If Einstein had happened to commit genocide, he would have still been a really smart guy - but he'd be a smart guy who shouldn't be allowed to live or accomplish his goals.
However, Hitler managed to lead the military of a small country to conquer a very large part of the world, so large that the war fought over it was called World War 2. He did that so well that many in the USA were worried about whether or not he would take the fight to the western hemisphere. It's stupid to claim that he wasn't good at leading his military.

But when its released I think its ok to say...I mean I knew when I played Devil May Cry that no other game that year would come close to it for me.

I've been hearing the term roguelike-like bandied around. I think it fits with being entirely nondescriptive.

EDIT: Destrado proved my original thesis wrong due to narrowness of definition (by way of Wikipedia, which isn't really credible, but it's what I used too), so ignore my original claim.
Old post:
Easy test: if your game is just as slow without the internet plugged in/turned on, you don't have lag!
Yes, this thread will probably educate no one. Feel free to empathize by complaining about other things gamers commonly say which make them sound silly.
