Yeah I know that EA is the publisher. I was hoping that it will also be on steam since the source engine was used for this game.

What don't you like about Origin? It doesn't grab folder information anymore (at least not more than Steam does) and Origin offers great customer support and refunds. Something Steam customers wait for ages... The only pro for Steam (imo) is the huge catalog (even most games are crap) and that my 250+ games are on Steam.

I'm sorry, are you their shareholder or what? Why on Earth as a consumer I would give a damn when the company started or when it launched it's product/service? What interests me is what I get for what I pay.

Their games aren't cheaper, are not exceptional in technical aspects and personally, I don't find them appealing to my taste - but that one's just my preference. They also offer me inferior service in certain aspects important to me to level I expect based on - let's not forget - current shitty Steam's service. So I don't think my expectations are so high.

If you're gonna come back defending anyone in such silly way I really hope you at least get paid for it because otherwise I really don't know why would you do that.

You missed the point of what I was saying, possibly because you hadn't read any of the previous discussion for context. Remove Steam entirely from the equation. How many of these games stop working? They don't need Steam. Steam is just mostly unintrusive DRM. Remove it and what do you have? A perfectly intact game. Very, very few games require Steam's services to run.

Ah, but with Steam I've never even needed support. Origin is just a malfeasance to me in every way. Fewer games, no sales, a second client to waste time and resources on, bullshit server errors that result in "without a trace" 700-800MB download packages, greatly extending my download times, etc.

Don't use. Doesn't really affect me but +1 for steam. Never used. Origin is simple just the store (which sucks) and the games and I like that. I like them both but I only want to play games, no need for bots inviting me for groups all the time.

I feel like Steam needs to tinker Greenlight just a little bit more. Fucking every idiot on Steam seems to thumbs up every game that tries for greenlight without actually critiquing the videogame on-display. This way we don't have so many people blaming Valve for letting these games in. It's the communities fault for getting in, in the first place >_>
They also gotta be willing to tear some games straight off their store page too. Cause there's people still buying Special Forces: Team X and that game has been dead for a long ass time.

Seriously? Community Market is just an option for Valve to get even more money. It's not made to make you like Steam, it's made to gain more money. Greenlight? Well, when you need to pay Valve in order to get a license, it just shows that Valve put Greenlight just to get even more money. Like they care if a shitty game is on Steam... (Gary's Incident, etc...). Workshop? You mean a place where people can upload mods for others to download and enjoy? Hmmm... I prefer the mods which I can find on the internet way more, since the Workshop is terrible by all means.

From the most basic search possible of Greenlight: "All proceeds from this fee (minus taxes) will be donated directly to Child's Play, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children in over 70 hospitals worldwide."

Well, in workshop, clicking "top rated all times" ordering option exceeds your cognitive capabilities I think we should ignore your opinion on any subject :)

1) Community market is just so people can sell trading cards or other little trinkets that they get from playing games. Games are meant to be played, not to earn a 50 cent rebate selling trading cards. Origin doesn't have the community market because it doesn't need it. They don't have trading cards, they don't have hats, and they don't have backgrounds. They don't need any of these things because people play games to play games.

2) Steam is getting rid of Greenlight soon. And Origin is only for EA games, so a Greenlight-like process would be pointless.

3) If you want mods then you can download them off the internet, there's a much bigger variety there anyway. Try looking at how much Left4Dead 2 content is on Workshop compared to how much is just on the internet. Besides, most Origin games don't need mods. The Sims 3 benefits from custom content, but there's so much lying around that a "Workshop" like interface couldn't even capture most of it. Steam only has workshop for some games, and The Sims is the only Origin franchise I can think of that could benefit from it, but it's not necessary.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Of course it's not necessary to have workshop in origin, especailly for Sims. You don't need enthusiastic people who find joy in creating content, you can buy the 20 reskinned beds in "randomstuffit'scoloredpink" expansion pack for 10$.

Also dismissing any service just because you don't need it is just pointless. The most I do is sell drops on market, but it doesn't hurt me in any way.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But what I'm saying is that the Sims is the only game that COULD really benefit from it that I can think of. Of the games that I have on Origin, while I haven't necessarily checked, I don't believe most of them have huge modding communities. If you look, there are plenty of free mods online in addition to what you're talking about that have nothing to do with EA. You just gotta look for things outside of the Sims website. There are plenty of enthusiastic people who find joy in creating content for it.

And when I'm saying that the market is pointless, a large part of it is because I like to play games so that I can play them. I don't play them to earn trading cards and sell them. I also don't have Steam because of its market. I have Steam to play my Steam games. I have an Xbox 360 as well, but I find it annoying that Microsoft is making it so that the Xbox isn't really a game console anymore (not that it bothers me too much now that I've made the transition to PC gaming and don't plan on buying the Xbox One/PS4/future consoles). While we can sell hats and stuff on the market, that's just a gimmick. Origin has nothing to sell. They don't use hats so that people will get obsessed with their games. They don't have trading cards and if they added them it would just be copying Steam, but there's no point in trading cards anyway as Steam's benefits for trading card collectors, however small they may be, would have no effect on Origin. What I was trying to say is that Origin users have nothing to sell on a market and hence a market would be useless. As it stands now the market is just for people to sell small things and when others buy them wonder "Why would they buy that?"

It's EA's way of monitoring their audience. Origin basically takes the information on your computer, operating system, and the hardware and software you have installed, and gives it to other companies for marketing. Current games that release on the PC require you to have an Origin account to play them. And you can't play games offline anymore, regardless of whether you own retail or digital.

My main problem with Origin is that forced pop-up with 'selected for you' and trying to lure you into buying. There's no way to turn that thing off at all. While with Steam you can turn that pop-up off and you actually do not have to enter the store at all if you don't want to.

Not to mention, looking at how EA failed on SimCity (2013) and it's always online DRM is also a reason for me not to use Origin.

I tell you, what my problem is with Origin. I have been /FORCED/ to use it, since it was beta. They released BF3, and based the authentication on a !!!BETA!!! wannabeDRM, which in my opinion was a resized internet explorer copy. Ever since that you could see that they don't have enough hardware power behind. But you know, most of the issues got fixed over the course of a year. Then things got worse: Every single new game they released there made the WHOLE origin network lagg, or stop working completely. I was playing there, I was there when they released BF3, ME3, Simcity, BF4. The whole fakking network was unusable for DAYS, or even a WEEK, because people tried to activate+login+play at the same time.
THE ORIGIN NETWORK+DRM IS NOT MENT TO HANDLE ANYTHING OTHER THAN USUAL LOW ACTIVITY.
I had problems with ME3's coop ever since I bought it. From day1. I couldn't play with one of my friends, but I could play with an another one. We searched the web, every support page, support center, EVERYTHING. The most relevant help we got: Do everything you've already done, and keep trying. But it DOES NOT WORK. This issue is still there.
You have EA, and you have a developer who makes the game you want to play, and you have a 3rd company (which's name I can't recall ATM) who develops origin. And you can see it, in every game, that they have two SEPARATE login system. You have the game's and the origin. And thoose two loose sync, or connection, or whatever, and the game crashes, or you DC. And they did not fix thoose problems.

"They have good customer support, and refund policy" Seriously, no offense, but if you are too dumb to check what you are buying, and you have to run to the support for refund, because: "OMG GAME DOESN'T START ON MY LAPTOP, GIEFMONEY BACK NOW!!!!" than you are dumb as a brick, and no company can help with that.
Also, there is a reason why they support is fast: Thousands of dumb as brick people are not getting scammed every day. If the kids on steam trying to break rules would not end up being scammed, steam support would be fast as well.

Fun fact: You could've played simcity a week earlier if you pirated it, then the people who bought it. Why? Because that's what you get when you think that origin is good. You get a slap on your face, because every time a game is released the whole network dies. You don't see that on steam, do you? How could you handle that? Hmmm? 10 games got greenlit, let's make steam lagg for 3 days. New CoD is out? Let's put up a day maintenance on steam, and stop everything -BUT- the shop. Just to show you how much we care.

Also, I don't care for titanfall being on origin, there are a lot of good games out there, and everyone can decide for themself what they buy or not.
The only reason I wrote this wall of text is for people who didn't know what origin was, and is about.

no, I don't, and that is an invalid arguemnt IMO, why? Because it's not the '00s, now software engineers have access to all the information, data structures, they have access to all the good and bad experiences of the industry, damn they used them, and saw what was wrong, and what was a good way to go. And after all this, a multi billion publisher like EA outsourced the project of the system that connects every single product, and aspect of what they have to offer. Valve's steam started out as one of the first systems that tried to connect networks with that big of a size, with no multi billion funding in their pockets, and no already set up route, or direction in front of them.
You don't go to a new hospital, and die, because "they don't know how to run operations yet", do you? This is the exact same thing. EA had every single aspect to make a good system that connects everything EA has made. Instead they choose to get it done as cheap as possible, and boy did it take a toll?

They could cure cancer, all of it, and you would still think of them as the devil. "Oh, they're just doing it for good public relations! Ah, the old "calm down" argument, for when one has nothing else to say. Again, point out where I said EA is perfect and problem-free, please, I'm really interested to know where I said that. However, what you have said is that not even donating ten fucking million dollars to charity is a good act, because it's "blood money" (no, seriously, do you actually not know what that means?) and that who gives a fuck about any of that that boring old tosh, because they made an underwhelming ending to my waifu video game? Get a goddamn sense of perspective, please.

Ah, the old "Im too dug into my own argument as to not even try to acknowledge the other persons arguments"-argument, for when people just can't bare to give up a useless internet word toss. Like me. Because I don't think we're even arguing about the same thing anymore..

And what part of me not caring about their broken products, be it shitty endings, bugs in FPSs or a random ugly texture do you not understand? (Italics are dramatic and look cool!)

First of.. Of course I know what blood money means. Ever heard of that wonderous thing called hyperbole? If I'd known you'd scrutinize every single word in order to take kind of moral high ground, I wouldn't even have bothered with this in the first place.
Second, I can't point out where I said you said EA were perfect and problem free, because I didn't.
Third, It's great that they gave money to charity, even if they had ulterior motives, but it doesn't change my opinon of them as a company in the gaming industry. Besides, whether it's "ten fucking million dollars", or just ten fucking dollars, I don't think the act of charity can be quantified.

It's EAs conduct as a leading gaming company in the industry that makes me dislike them. I'm sorry you think of my opinon as invalid, just because EA gave some of their(/our?) money away, but I don't like them better for it.
Their intent was not genuine charity, and I have not seen this followed up by any acts of goodness. If they were to start mending their ways, with a huge charity as a kick off, then my hat would go off to them in an instant.

i can agree with u in all but not in "ugly texture", not all of their games are broken (at least if u didn't know most of the problems on BF4 are on intel procs 'cause of their bad optimization)..."shitty endings" comes from Mass Effect 3, but people know how to make from a fly a big fucking elephant...and with bugs, i can't argue that, but they at least try to make it better. It's easy to dislike EA for what? For some different endings which are not like we find in all of other games like when ur Captain Price form WW2 still alive in 2014? I don't tell that they don't make me angry with BF4 problems...but it's not a bad company neither...at least not like Valve!

Comment has been collapsed.

There's a difference between hyperbole and making stuff up to sound cool. Everything you've said indicates that there's only two ways to think of EA: as a perfect godrace company or as the Devil's sphincter. Since I can't conform to that last one because I have a sense of priorities, clearly I must worship EA with my every waking breath, so you must assume that giving to charity = all is forgiven. Untrue. I think EA has a lot of problems. I just don't think this amount of hatred is warranted except by twelve-year-olds who think microtransactions are the Rapture. And charity can be quantified, at least to an extent, but it was their money (that's how transactions go. We give them money, it becomes theirs) and they could have just not done it at all, but instead even took the time to think about how to make it more interesting for everyone involved and gave Steam keys for basically all the games. Even if you buy into the argument that it was just to get DLC money, that's very, very unlikely to make up for the lost profit from all of those games that were given out, since few would end up actually buying the DLC. Finally, they already have started changing their ways, it's just a slow process to fix problems, and yes, the bundle was the start of it. Ever since the last CEO finally left, EA's done a ton of backtracking. Whether it will last or change anything industry-wise in the long run, who knows, but there was a reason EA and Activision were hugely respected names once and they probably both want to get back to that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, that's pretty much what hyperbolic means. And no I don't think EA is the spawn of satan, just tried down by people who clearly don't understand the industry, the habit to abuse and use customers, and have extremely poor franchise and studio management skills..

Anyways, I really do hope you're right and that EA turn around and clean up their act. Shouldn't be too hard if they try, they do after all have some amazing franchises that could easily help with that.

Edit: Sorry if I sounded a bit condescending when you were just politely stating your point. I guess I didn't have a need to use sarcasm here.

Not saying Origin is a bad program. I see no problems with games like Battlefield being on Origin for PC (frostbite is by EA's DICE)

Just stating that I think it should be on both Steam and Origin.

EA wants to maximise their profits. They get more cash per copy selling in Origin than Steam.

Well, too bad. You can spend several hundred on a XBox One, game and Gold online subscription, or you can spend a bit of time figuring out why you have the problem?

If you really don't want to continue using Origin, do what a friend of mine does. Install Origin, install game, remove Origin, play game. I imagine the online for the game won't work with that method, but the software isn't required to play the games.

Isn't Titanfall online only though? Or have they clarified that?

There are many things wrong with it. Its not hated for no reason and just imagine if every single publisher felt the need to jam their shitty software down our throats in order to play their games. Even steam is not perfect but people accept it as its not just DRM at the inconvenience of the user. From Gabe says, he wants to make it a more open platform for developers to have complete control of their store page, for example.

Also you sound like we should be grateful its coming to PC when its in their interest. Companies don't do what their customers want, they do what makes them money, they exist to make money from you and hopefully offer you a decent product for it but knowing EA's track record even though they are not the dev's, publishers have a lot of control and are the ones responsible for games being rushed and released incomplete amongst other things.

It is however hated for reasons that no longer exist. Many of the flaws I'll see people use when they ***** about Origin either aren't now, or at times are even flaws that Steam has.

And yes, when the alternative is spending several hundred dollars on another system, Origin is a far better choice. At least it isn't an system exclusive title.

I'm well aware companies are in it for the money, its a good part of why Origin exists as a service after all.

Origin. This is a thing that makes a game not 'amazing'. To get rid of that, people have to stop buying games with this service. Otherways they'll keep releasing AA tiltes on it, is that what you want?. If yes, have fun. Ea can make great games, they showed it too often to say they can't but they hardly bitching with the users and this really have to stop.

The only time you should be allowed to do this is if you are comparing consoles. And even then, that can really only apply to SNES vs Genesis, since that was really the only time where controllers were extremely different from each other, and it would matter when it came down to playing, say, Mortal Kombat 3 on either the Genesis or the SNES, because of the button layout and how many there are.

I agree that it is ridiculous for a AA game that people are sooo looking forward to is only going to be accessible through Origin. And I do feel that it is unfair, and truthfully quite stupid. But really, with a game like TitanFall, were the only other option is buying a Xbox One, I think I would rather just use Origin. But that depends on the person, and how hyped you are for this game. Personally I've been very hyped for this game, that's why I will buy it and play it on Origin if need be, as I will not go and buy a XboxOne. Plus it's really not that hard to play it on Origin instead of steam. Sure it's one more program open and whole different community, but if it is the only way for this game....Why not? It's not like the gameplay is any different.

There are bigger issues. If additional software REALLY is an issue then you probably need to clean your PC up anyway.

I don't really have any problem using Origin. Heck, I've never run into issues with any of the associated DRM software (uPlay, GFWL, Steam, Origin). I was kind of annoyed that BF3 used a web browser and Origin, though.

Indeed. The only reason I hate UPlay is that the games I have on it won't run without an internet connection. I've wanted to play Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon while my internet was down. :(

I can understand that. I was offline for about 6 months at one point, to save a bit of money. Steam worked fine (other than being unable to earn achievements offline). With how little I actually need a high-speed connection, I wish I could just pay a nominal fee to have a minimal connection and pay an extra per-day fee if I actually had a use for high speed that day. Say $10 flat and $2 a day.

yes, i prefer having all games on steam, too. but origin isn't that bad, and you really can't blame EA for using their own client to sell their own games. Valve doesn't publish their games on Origin either, right? and having some competition on the market is a good thing in general. you know that steam recently added a feature to cancel preorders? well, Origin was first. and their system is even better in my opinion (buy and play a game, give it back if you don't like it within 24 or 48 hours). maybe Valve wouldn't even have implemented the new system, if there was no Origin. competition is good, and i really don't mind starting Origin every once in a while.

I didn't even know Titanfall was using the source engine.

Well seems like another "Please hate us!" yell by EA, using the source engine but instead of releasing it on Steam like any other Source Engine Game/mod would they go to Origin, especially since they have to pay Valve for the source engine?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i really don't get it. they license the Valve engine, and that means they have to be on Steam? why is that? every other source game is on steam? so what, thats not an argument at all. i kind of hate defending EA here, but if they license the source engine, they can do with it, whatever they want. and Valve is fine with that for sure, else they would just demand a release on Steam as part of the contract.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I haven't realized you can just buy a license to the source engine.

I recall it being Open Source and having restrictions like "give us X% of the money you own!" like Unreal has, but investiagion has shown that mods are free to make, games require a license and in that case you are right, it is just like any other engine and EA can do with it whatever they want since they payed for it.

Personally I prefer seeing a well engineered engine like Source to be used in EA games.

Regardless, EA put themselfes on my "never trust never like" list, when they decided to make Origin Spyware and even be illegal as such in Germany at the beginning.

EA is not always the pure evil. ^^ i recently found out that EA was responsible for giving us Populous back in the day, when no other publisher wanted to take that risk (recent TB video). Populous was a big milestone and invented a whole new genre. so EA must also be on our "thank 'em forever" list. ;)

and i am still not sure about this whole spyware thing. because at least some of the reports back then were identified as fake picures/videos from EA haters. so i really cant tell what exactly origin did or still does, and how much worse that is in comparison to steam.

That was a Source game? I didn't believe it at first, but wow. Source, though is nice, didn't certainly seem very "next-gen" as it lacked all those fancy features like AO, SSSS, tesselation, etc. But hey, it's an online title for consoles. I guess it helps.

Also, the graphics doesn't give it away. It looks AMAZING. It's incredible what they managed to eek out of that old but versatile engine.
