Rumors has it that Lara was originally meant to be a Gecko, but then Crystal Dynamics got confused, because they already had one. Those rumors might have been made up by me, but you never know.
Maybe those breasts were slapped together in a hurry and look like that for that reason (notice the gamebox art had nice round shapes but the game character model had... not).
The best thing about breasts on images and in games is that clothes doesn't lay on them like this. In reality fabric isn't cupping them (even super tight swiming suits doesn't behave like this) but otherwise they wouldn't be so much visible xD

Good point! Game clothes have some eldritch powers of breast cupping. Maybe fashion designers should research this for new ideas.
Now that I saw the box art again I remember how me and my older brother waited for the original game. We got the demo from some demo cd if I remember right, or via local game magazines webpage / BBS(can't remember if they still had BBS or was the webpage already up?) Well anyway we fell in love with the demo, played it many many times, tried different things etc. Then after some time my brother went to central and searched for the game from different game stores and finally found it. Oh boy the memories ^^
