Long range, provided you had ample fortifications and sightlines on all possible approach vectors, preferably somewhere elevated that's not exactly easy to get to. Not that I've seriously considered the question before. :P

Melee for large numbers and small spaces. Long ranged for small numbers and large spaces.

I would choose this one because a far zombie, may not be a treath and perhaps it's more wise to let it go than catch evey zombie's attention. I wouldn't choose short because I still like to keep distance, and if you are fighting agaisn't a horde, it could get seriously dangerous when reloading.

As backup, I would choose either a shotgun or a sword. Shotgun can still provide a safe perimeter, but it's loud as loud can be, and a sword, that perimeter would be even smaller, but silencer. I would also consider a crossbow, not as a fighting weapon, but more like an assassination weapon.

But still, I would focus in finding shelter and basic suplies than actually kill the undeads.

Shotgun: Get a bunch of them with less shots fired + only fire if you have to.

If blessed with infinite ammo, I'd pick a shotgun. Otherwise, a well weighted machete and fists of steel! :)

If i can wear some sort of heavy armor, then I'm going for melee. I'm the weapon!

But i'd have a shotgun as a backup for when things do get messy!

No throwing weapons? I've never held a gun but I'm pretty good with throwing things (which could also work as a melee weapon if needed.)

Where's the option for all of the above? Personally, I'd have as many weapons as I could reasonably carry so that I could defend against the oncoming hordes no matter what degree of distance. Although if pressed I suppose I'd go with a sniper rifle outfitted with a suppressor. So that I could pick them off one by one without drawing attention to myself.

Surviving a "zombie apocalypse" would probably depend on your gear and planning more than weapons. In terms of weapons, what's more important are a variety of weapons suited for different tasks than a single weapon. The most useful weapon against zombies would depend on the physiology, anatomy, and biology of a zombified corpse. Traditionally, zombies could only be killed if they are are beheaded or if an encephalectomy is performed on them (i.e., their brain is removed or separated from their body). If that is true, then any weapon that could accomplish this would be preferred—such as a shotgun, axe, or bladed polearm. If the zombie could be dispatched without removing the brain, any long-ranged weapon, melee or ranged, is preferable. Since zombification is typically passed like an infection through bodily fluids, it is best to keep the zombies as far from you as possible.
