Thanks for a nice giveaway. :-) It seems to have some great improvements over Heroes 3, which is the last game of the genre I played.

Also, thank you for the between-the-lines recommendation for A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm putting it on my to-read list. :-) (Sadly, it's on that list behind Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. I wonder what I should say to the guy in the bookshop, though. "Hello, I'd like to buy 15 kg of fantasy books, please"?)

You're welcome. It took me a while to buy them, but I'm loving the series so far (about halfway through the second book). Just be warned. It will take you three hundred pages to learn the names and positions of everyone mentioned and then most of those will be rendered moot by the end of the first book. The second book is worse. You can either laugh or cry at that thought.

Oh god. I brute forced the first one. Where did Tywin retreat to exactly? I'm interested now.

He retreated to Harrenhal.

I thought it was King's Landing at first. This stuff is ridiculously hard to find on Google - I think my only hint to it was on some article discussing lines of retreat where it mentioned in passing a place called Harrenhal, and I tried out of desperation.

Wait, really? Damn. I tried Googling it with a few different methods and you're right. It isn't as obvious as I thought it was. Should I change it up a bit?

I spent about 40 minutes reading various wiki pages and found nothing about a retreat by Tywin Lannister. So I gave up and just brute forced the first letter. The clue definitely needs to be changed.

Err, actually it comes up in nearly every wiki for a song of ice and fire. The only confusing bit is the word 'retreat' since it implies he lost a battle, which he didn't. But if anyone read the giveaway thread, they would've found that out from one of the posts.

Of course... I only knew that because I've already READ ASOIAF, so... umm...

Thanks for the giveaway!

No, it's pretty easy to find, actually. Just Google "A Song of Ice and Fire wiki," ignore Wikipedia since they don't go far enough in-depth, and stumble upon a lovely url: A Song of Ice and Fire Wiki

From there, all you have to do is find Tywin Lannister's profile and read about the wonderfully crafted stories therein.

Nah, dont worry, its easy to bruteforce it... as long as it's the only letter left. Thanks for sharing those Gordon Freeman series, so much epicness put together!

What did 3 mean? I found a youtube link and I'm afraid to watch it till the end.

For the love of God, watch the whole series. :D

""Dear John Freeman, how are you? I miss you at home come home safe and soon with Gordon Freeman for thanksgiving dinner. Love mom." John Freeman looked at it and got sad and yelled "I WILL KILL THE BOSS AND GORDON FREEMAN WILL BE HAPPY SOUL!" then he turned on off the computer and wet on the platform again down to his other more faster motorcycle that had gas in it this time."

... what... what the hell is that?

The actual series is this. It's a series of G-mod dramatic readings of a so-bad-it's-good troll fanfiction.

Spent so long on the first one making sure it was right. The whole time I had Birth instead of Life for #2.

Hmm... may change the clue a little to prevent people making that mistake. Let me think on that, see if the wording's too ambiguous. I've just always considered the answer to that question to be life.

First off, thanks for the giveaway :)

FWIW, my mind went straight to 'life'. I also don't think a little ambiguity would hurt puzzles as it makes it slightly harder to brute force. The only one I found difficult was the first one and that just required a little more Googling. Also, as a general suggestion for future giveaways, I'd say the easier the giveaway, the shorter it should be.

Oooh, It's _h_ammer, not _B_ANhammer!

Also I had to guess Harrenhal, since I found no source that mentioned Tywin retreating ever. Also: I've been meaning to watch the series and/or read the books. A shame I spoiled the whole series by learning all plot points that look important via google :D

Anyway: Thank you ;)

It took me a while to figure out the wording for the weapon clue. I figured that, hopefully, by adding "ancient" to the clue, most people would drop the "ban" part of it.

I had "banhammer" as well for awhile, then I realized you were referring to the actual weapon. :)

Permalink

Wait, you mean it's not an ancient howitzer?

Permalink

It was obviously just hammer since "ban" is part of the clue

Harrenhal, I found in under 30 seconds, I know nothing about the source, didn't know it was anything to with Game of Thrones, which I also know nothing about.

I googled: "A Song of Ice and Fire" Winterfell Tywin Lannister retreat

the answer was in the fifth result.

I had a tough time with 1 and 4. I thought Ban Hammer right away, but I thought it may be something more. Like steamgifts had a signature ban machete or something :)! Anyways, I can't believe I figured one of these out! :) Thanks for the giveaway man.
