Day 9
Ninth lesson learnt: Support the ones who try.
Okay, this is a lesson that has actually happened today to me. I'm doing a group project with other 5 classmates, and you all know how hard it is to work in groups. There are always people who don't work, and others who try it, but don't do things well and make you work even more to do it right. Well, I have some of these in my group too. I don't accept that people don't work, as some have tried to (you need to tell them to do something from time to time, or they disappear). But if people try to do things well, even though they don't succeed, you should be there with them and try to help them. And so I did with one of the members of my group (without expecting anything in return, of course). And today, she has surprised me, because she has shared with me some old exams she had because of me working hard for the group. She has done that because she's happy to see that things are starting to go well for the group, and that all the time that she's worked has been for something. So today I got two gifts: the old exams, in order to get an idea about how this year's one will be, and the joy of seeing a classmate happy because she's succeeding.

Yeah I know those, that don't do anything in group efforts. in German TEAM could be an acronym for "Good someone else is doing it" (Toll, ein anderer macht's). So if you don't get them to work (and I appreciate anyone even trying to put in an effort), what do you do? Do you just leave them out, because their share won't get done anyhow (rewarding them for their stance)? Or do you call them out? Our group in a large project did the former, but the teachers noticed that the guy didn't say a word or do anything so they asked me as group leader what I thought to do about someone not doing their job (they clearly could see the problem without anyone of us telling). So I said that we did have a team vote to exclude said guy, but it came out negative as it would have made us look bad. Now the teachers asked me what they should do, not give him a participation certificate?! I said, if someone deserved to not receive it, it would be I as a group leader, as I failed to inspire the other guy to do anything (not that anything would have inspired him). So they said they would think about revoking my certificate. Well, I told my group this and they were all like "Oh no", the guy in question turned pale (he had thought noone would really notice that he didn't do anything). What would the teachers do? Well we were called back into the seminar room. They said, they wouldn't revoke anyone's certificate, but that we all had learned a valuable lesson. Next time do drop people that don't even try to help the group (the guy went even paler) as it was the same thing that would happen on a job and the next thing was, that they were proud that we still turned in the paper, with one guy short. So we all got an A for the effort and learned some more lessons on the way.

Great story, and so brave from you to do that. I have actually complained about those in my group who don't do anything (we don't have a leader, we're supposed to do all the same, more or less), because I don't think it's fair that they get the same mark as mine having worked very little. I want it to be the 18th already, so that the project is finally finished :(

It is sometimes. If the groups are small and you all work, it can be useful, though ^^
