From what i remember from school, you use were instead of was if the sentence is a conditional one (if it uses "if").
for ex: If i were to be lucky, i could win your game.

Keep in mind though that english is not my first language (french is) and school was a long time ago.

I have a master's so you should listen to me xD
Just kidding :D
I mean, I do have it and you should use "were" in (if) conditionals, but feel totally free to listen to some music instead of me :D

Thanks! Yeah, I guess I didn't realise it was conditional. I always used to say 'conditional' shit when I was a kid. Y'know, stuff like 'WHAT IF YOU WERE A LION, DAD????'

It's an easy mistake to make since it's an exception to the general rule so you're used to using "was" for 2nd person singular.
Just to make it clear, in your example:
Was I going to give this away?
or
were I going to give this away?

The first one (was) is correct seeing as there's no "if" ;)

"If I were to give this away... I wouldn't have created an english-grammar discussion like you did."

only for illustration purposes -- don't take the example too seriously :P

Naw, it's fine. I'm pretty sure English is considered one of the most difficult languages in the world. I think, anyways. It has all sorts of funky rules.

but english isnt. :S .. There are so many other languages that are much more difficult... Madarin and Japanese?

Are you SURE? English has a ridiculous amount of rules that contradict themselves. Japanese and Mandarin, from what I've heard, are just intimidating and not actually that difficult to learn.

oh... ok, then.

But rule-inconsistency is not a good attribute. And it is definitely not a good rationale for difficulty.

Sorry, I just meant that I was told by language teachers throughout the years that it's harder to learn English second than it is to learn, say, French or German second. Personally, I would take their word for it. It's their job. Also, it's not only the rules, it's also that there are several ways to say a sentence. From what I remember from my language classes, there aren't as many ways to say one sentence (e.g. French, in my case) as there are in English.

Strangely, I can't recall ever learning these, but I have always used "if I were to". And...

Yeah, pretty much that picture. It makes sense that were would be used with plurals(this is a trend, anyways) or with conditionals.

I think you will be going to give this away. Though of course you can prove me wrong easily. ;)

In your sentence above I think I vote for "Was I going to give this away?"
However, in a different sentence like "If I were to give this way, someone will be happy" I would vote for were.
I'm not a native speaker though and therefore my 2 cents may be the wrong currency.
